D J KETTERINGHAM - LONDON - CLOSURE

Noooooooo!

Well, I suppose it was inevitable really. I had the pleasure of meeting Derek and have his business card. At least I can say I met him and saw his cars. I really hope all of the cars find sympathetic new homes.

I wish I were rich so I could buy the whole place and run it as a working museum or something.  At the very least I want freaking PRINCESS POSTER.

I have sent Mr Ketteringham a message, perhaps I will get lucky.

Very sad, but I suppose all good things must come to the end. I've never visited this place, but have driven past it and it's a proper timewarp.

Posted

Yeah, have driven past it hundreds if not thousands of times. The cars I saw were a little pricey IMHO but looking at the latest pics, maybe not. Especially if they are 'negotiable' at present. Bloody shame. More flats, just what we need.

Posted

oh ARSE. That would make a great film location. Too late.

I heard he had sold the red SD1 recently, how long has this stuff been sitting there for??

Isn't it always the lot of the avant-garde to be doomed to failure? This chap's problem was that he was way too ahead of the game in terms of massively overpriced shit car sales. The world just wasn't ready for £3k Carlton estates a few years ago, but just look at the success of 'KGF cars' and The Doctor now and wonder what might have been. Hopefully one day Ketteringham will find his place in history as a true pioneer in the field of foisting hugely undesirable tat on people at vastly unrealistic prices.

Truly a legend in our own time.

Very sad to hear the news of this closing - maybe the cars he had would be at a 'reduced to clear' kind of price until they are gone??

Posted

Fair play to him for keeping the prices the way he did.    At least the place stayed right a bit longer....I'd rather look at overpriced 80s motors when I was in a traffic queue then another block of shit flats with monkeymetal balconies and wanky mountain bikes hanging off them.

Posted

Apparently the cars are now "priced to sell" and "sympathetically negotiable " so it may well be worth a call if anyone is in the market for some quality chod.

Not sure how up to date that stock list is, I was told the Rover 2600 got snapped up about 6 weeks ago.

thats ace id love a few of those  guess they are sold as seen no mot

Keith Adams got messaged it this morning I think?

Actually Trig I could have it wrong because the Oporto red SD1 in the front window was a 3500 VDP thinking about it, so the 2600 listed is a different car :?

Two £500 Granadas, and one's a Ghia X? Eek, I want it, condition regardless. (That's never going to happen)

If they're the same ones, then they've been sat around the back of the garage for over 10 years...

Keith messaged me about the Granny's, they are the same ones and are a bit "soft", still worth a punt though I'd thought.

That'll be the convenient lack of detail then!

I'll stick to XJ40s for the pipedreams then.

I've got to go to that there London tomorrow to meet the missus for our Silver wedding anniverssarry dinner,I've got nothing to do after about 2 so could take a little diversion twixt M1 and West End.

If one of those Grannys is silver, perfect present........

That Carlton estate is a honey. DVLA say it went off the road in 1988 at only 2 years old!! £1250 now with room for negotiation I reckon thats a cracking buy around the grand mark

I'm sure the OP has some photos of them on his flickr account?

  • 1987 (D) Toyota Starlet, red, 163K miles, £800
  • 1993 (L) Honda Concerto 1.5, blue, £650
  • 1986 © Vauxhall Carlton estate, 58K miles, £1250

Any updates on this and what's left? Just picking over the bones now I expect, sad but inevitable. Some of the cars are popping up on other forums and creating gasps, like the blue Fiat Regata.

Have to admit the pics of that white Carlton estate have stopped me sleeping on many occasions.

First trip past in years next weekend and it's gone :-(
