Shite track cars?

Recommended Posts

I'd like some sort of vehicle I could take on the odd track day.

Ideally I'd like something rwd like an E30 or an MX-5.

As a shiteist my budget is about £99 so they're out.

Have been looking at this sort of thing.

Apparently the 1.4 kettle develops something like 100hp so in a car that would be under a ton stripped should be entertaining.

Also obligatory french hatchbacks like -

You absolutely could not do better than that. Those things are sprightly to say the least, and once stripped and tuned it would go like a rocket. On the track you would be able to embarrass those who had spent fifty times as much on their cars.

That robin is lush, and it meets all my specified criteria. Should have stated I'm looking for 4 wheels!

Fiesta is in watch list and have sent a pm to WOC about that Volvo.

Cheers all for the suggestions.

I'd go for a car that handles well before one with big power. Something Tipo based would be a good start imo, Alfa 155 or Fiat koopay.

WoC's Volvo is an excellent choice for the money. A mate of mine took a bog standard Mitsubishi Carisma round Cadwell Park a while back, and apart from comedy suspension going over the mountain it did quite well.

PM replied to ref. my Volvo...  Have to counsel though, despite being quick in a straight line (provided you can get the power down) they don't really handle that well.  Entertaining maybe, but don't expect to embarrass anyone round the corners (unless you're Rickard Rydell).

You are on the right lines but Shirley a rover 200 BRM is the one to go for. Pretty much the biggest bang for your buck these days they are so cheap.

Personally I would opt for a 620 Ti, 200 horses off the bat and bound to handle better when stripped out.

Just be cautious of diff issues.

Grandad spec honda civic. (rover 400 shape)

the 1.8 vti models are cheap as chips and have proper double wishbone suspension up front.

Even the normal 1.4 and 1.6 ones handle very well as the basic suspension set up is similar to the integra type r

I know zilch about performance cars but I will say that one of these, not massively modified...

Gave some much newer and more expensive machinery a pasting at a series of races at Castle Coombe a couple of years ago.  He came past at one point going backwards in a cloud of tyre smoke and took more risks than anyone else, ended up coming 1st.  Was in a very mixed class of Saxos, ZRs, Astras and TTs.  It was the only Tomcat and by far the oldest car there.

Do track day cars have to be mot'd or can they be hanging together with baler twine?

They do not need to be MOT'd to be used on track. Usually all they have to pass is a noise test, most tracks have a 105dB limit, some lower.

If the car does have crap brakes, suspension or steering then you won't be going in to corners quickly or having too much fun. If the car is missing structural rigidity then good luck as you're more likely to crash on track than on the road.

I suspect that the 9-5 is probably too heavy?

Somebody used to do hillclimb in a Jaguar XJ12 in the 1990s. It was impressive.

I always thought a 2 litre series 1 Scenic would make a good track day car all stripped out. They're fairly swift anyway, but all the interior parts weighs a ton and there's a hell of lot of it to pull out and dump. They understeer as standard but that would easily be cured with either rock hard springs at the back to shift the balance or fit a stiff anti roll bar back there. Too heavy can also be cured with a big dose of HOLESAW.

ALSO DRIVE WITH THE RARE SEAT'S DOWN TO ENSURE BETTER WAIT TRANSFERE,,,ECT,,,ECT

Look for a tatty Saxo VTR for track stuff, cheap as chips, sell the interior, fit a bucket and harness, service the engine and hope the oil seals hold out for a good thrapping!

you'll be lucky to get owt for a ton.

I know £100 is a bit optimistic but maybe a net cost of £100 once unnecessary things like the interior have been sold on?

Monsieur Le Bollaeux got his MG with a kippered head gasket for just over a oner.

I would need to keep the car T&T'd and drive it to events. And also insured.

B'starding insurance is proving to be an issue at the moment.

I'm 31 with a clean licence and didn't think I lived in too bad an area. Insurance on a 1400 Rover is £650 a year!

Shirley insuring a shopping trolley as a second car should be nice and cheap? £300 maybe?

Am possibly going to go back on trade at the end of Jan, will see what the prices are like nearer the time. I wouldn't class myself as a trader really but it's the only realistic way to insure more than 1 car.

Wasn't cobblers selling an MX5 for not much? More than a tonne admittedly but if you convert it sensibly (I.e. don't just trash it) you'll get all the money back with an advert on pistonheads.

I know that Proton coupes make orsum budget rally cars, I'm guessing they'd be quite useful round a track as well?
