I'd like to make a few videos of my shite but I need to learn how to edit them first. I've made a couple that you might have seen before though.

A walkaround my old Kadett.

Then i took it for a drive around the block.

I also made one when I was selling my Mk3 Escort too.

As part of my final year coursework I did a piece on the closure of Mouldsworth Motor Museum.

If you could ignore my gibbering visage, I'd be very grateful.

^ Some great films on here.

I'll add one of mine that you might have seen before, but it may as well live on this thread.

This is quite boring. Sorry. Nothing goes bang.

What camera did you use? What one would you recommend to get this level of 'broadcast quality'?

A: What's your budget?

B: What kind of work do you need it for?

The camera I used for that piece was nowt special, it was a Canon 600D DSLR and a couple of lenses - the 18-105 for most of the shots and a 50 for some of the detail cutaways in Mouldsworth.

The University's cameras were shocking and didn't even have a focus ring.

I did the sound on my Tascam DR-100 because there weren't enough clip mics to go around. It had to be self-shot so I couldn't use a boom or anything like that. I just set it up out of shot and synced it with the edit later.

Ok, here's "the barefoot chef part 2"
It starts exactly the same as part one, but its just the first few lines...

And here's Episode 1, but embedded properly...

Is that you presenting? You seem to have quite a knack for it. Your voice suits it well.

And I still cant make the bastards embed.

Put the URL of the video into 'youtube' tags - so like (youtube) http blah blah blah (/youtube) only with '[' and ']' instead of '(' and ')'

Yes, flapping gob man is me. I 'do' radio at weekends.

The easiest way to get YT videos into posts is to use the 'Special BBCode' button on the left of the font drop down box. Go to the YouTube selection at the bottom of the list. When you're on the You Tube page of the video you want to display click on 'Share' and that will give you the direct URL. Copy and paste into the Special BBCode box back on AS and it should embed.

Thanks for link sorting Trig.

Skizzer's vid is fabulous. I love that. Now need to watch Dugong's. As he says, DSLRs are all the rage for video these days. Stupidly, last year I opted for a budget DSLR, which doesn't do video. Mistake. So, I either need to go in for an upgrade or consider getting a specific camcorder.

EDIT - now watched Dugong's report. Great stuff! Far better than the shite stuff you get on local news. That ultimate barn find Heinkel is great.

A second hand 600D with off board sound would do what you needed. It's also a pretty handy still DSLR. There isn't enough of a gap between my Nikon D60 and 600D to justify me swapping for the moment, mind. I'm waiting for 5D Mark 2s to come down in price.

500D would probably do the job, and they're a fair bit cheaper. My camera budget is even less than my car buying budget. Which is currently zero... (hopefully this'll change in the new year!)

EDIT - 600D has a flexible rear screen. That's a potential deal-breaker. My SX10 Powershot has one. They are VERY useful.

Ah, like that.

You don't get those options on an iPad.

So, here's a very fast Top Gear skit.

Yup, being able to frame when self-shooting is shit hot.

Dugong man, you seem to know what you're doing -  I got a Nikon D3200, How do I zoom in and out and while keeping stuff in focus in a video?

I've just about got my head round what I need to be doing photo wise, and it seems to do mega videos but I can never seem to keep anything in focus properly. Auto focus seems no good at all while videoing because it gets it wrong half the time, and the other half it spends few seconds randomly just going from stop to stop before it gets it anywhere near right.

I'm definitely doing something completely wrong but I dont know what

The lens on your Nikon - what is it?

My money's on your lens being varifocal. As you shift between elements you're losing focus. You'd have to reframe and refocus. Fine for stills but balls for video. You need a parfocal lens (as fitted to video cameras) that keeps focus while you zoom.

I'd also check what AF setting you have it on - although most parfocal lenses will retain focus by default no matter what servo setting you have it on. Having never shot video on a Nikon, I couldn't say for definite.

EDIT: Read up on this and subject-tracking AF should sort your problem. The 18-55 you're probably using is parfocal. I'd also recommend trying to shoot video in manual and seeing if that makes a difference.
