Yo, derin100, how about throwing up some pictures of repairing the rot on the Pagoda in a different thread for us all to see? Did you do the welding etc. yourself?

No way...I can't do that sort of stuff. And it's not a car or a model of car I would ever wish to be involved with again!

When I agreed to help with taking it on I was very naive about Pagodas and the owner even more so (even though he'd owned it for about 24 years already). I knew they rusted badly and tried to tell the owner of this potential serious aspect that but he was under the impression it just had the odd 'bubble here and there'. He had had a huge amount of work done in the past (with about £25K's worth of bills to prove it) by a well-known Pagoda specialist in the past and another well-known classic car restorer down South.

However, most of the preceding work was shocking...even I could see that.

Once started it was only then that I started doing some serious reading around the Pagoda subject. It was then I discovered the sums of money that it could take to really restore one properly. I discovered a chap in the USA who'd spent $197,000 restoring his with a further $25K 'freshen-up' a few years later!

The amount the owner of the brown one did decide to spend was still (to me, at least) still a very large amount of money. It was an amount and level that he negotiated directly with the bodyshop himself. Even so, in the face of what I now know about Pagodas, it's a very 'nice' one but it's by no means a 'perfect' one. But I wonder how many really are now? I've even heard (so second-hand knowledge) that one that they had at Mercedes-Benz World for sale, which I'd assumed to be a 'factory restoration' isn't, isn't actually that great and is also being sold on a commission basis.

I also have to say that at the end of the project it was a very 'pretty' car...but I really didn't like driving it. It completely cured me of ever wishing to own one myself!

This thread has been getting a bit depressing over the last day or two, but this picture properly made me do a ROFL, so cheers for that Señor Imp.

It's THAT time of year again, isn't it...?

Y'know... troll season...

Is there any limitation on weapons...?

To be fair, he's not really a troll - he's just come on here to try to defend the price of a ridiculously expensive car. None of us may agree with him, or like his rather irritating, patronising tone, but I'm sure his view is genuine and he's entitled to it.

We've had worse - and at least he's not flogging Viagra (yet).

Dr Oyzo or whatever his name is may be a nob, but some of us need to learn to take it a bit better as well, I'm afraid...

So I 'left it'...but then some people had to 'start it again'! And, as usual, get personal and insulting e.g "may be a nob" ? "irritating and patronising"?

So you expect me to just 'leave it' again?

Well, here goes again...

Re-read what this 'expert' said to me...this is a masterclass in "irritating and patronising" and to that I'd also add both "ignorance coupled with extreme arrogance"!

I must say, although they are lovely BMW's, if not overpriced, I'm not sure of the finish of them...

Pic 20 - There seems to be alot of orange peel on that paintwork, a common BMW issue, rectified by some wet sanding and an afternoon with a good rotary and compound, followed by hours of refining.

Has the car been cleaned at all? There's no depth to the paintwork, no sharp reflections. I;d go as far to say that it's had some filler rich, silicone heavy shit slapped all over it, so it passes the 5 yard test. How come there's no macro'd close up pics of the paintwork? For 8k I'd expect zero defects at all.

Pic 23 - the bumper doesn't look completely level to me...

Pic 34 - is that a hologram I see on the rear pillar? Surely you spent 10 minutes with a soft pad and a finishing compound to whip those off? Turtle wax is shit at these sort of things...

8/10 for effort, but no cigar today!

fucking hell! 5 pages + of complete shitbag one sided fucking pissing contest!! I didn't give a flying shit 5 pages ago and my interest is waning fast.

I was with him to start with, thinking that car detailing to that level is an artform, and hell yes if somebody pays the money then so what.

Now I am just thinking that a NOOB troll has completely fucked up an otherwise interesting thread,

START YOUR OWN THREAD THEN THE REST OF US CAN JUST IGNORE IT.

I think he meant start a thread about arguing over perceived values of restorations so people can go and fight there are those that choose to can ignore it. Like that one about the doctor a while back.

Internet fights are sometimes amusing, this one isn't though.

Have an expensive moke to get things back on track:

The guy comes on here, expresses his viewpoint, which he validates with detailed descriptions, links, pics, etc, but gets abused.

Then, when he defends himself against such abuse... He get's further abused!

The man is clearly very highly experienced at his specialty, and works to an extremely high standard, he writes in depth, validated posts, and takes the time to correct points, yet he's continually abused!

Whilst new, he is not a troll, and has as much right as anyone to post, and to defend himself against abuse.

Besides which, when did richardthestag become the nominated voice of Autoshite, authorized to speak on behalf of "THE REST OF US"? Because he certainly is not speaking for me.

Behaving in the manner of mindless abusers simply because you disagree with the poster, or don't like their posts does this forum absolutely no favours, and the whole point of the forum is to attract and keep those whom can contribute to it.

Adding to the knowledge base of the forum, by attracting enthusiastic, experienced members should be something to work in favour of, rather than the opposite.

With that in mind, I'd like to say Hello and Welcome to derin100, and please keep contributing, as I for one appreciate your posts!

Its more the 'I AM MAKING MY POINT AND IT IS THE RIGHT POINT, I AM MAKING IT AGAIN, I REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE AS I AM RIGHT' kind of attitude that makes him look like a right cunt.

I think with that Mini van, on a scarcity basis you'd actually be paying £15k for the van and £20k for the rubber mat...:lol:

Plus, for £35k I wouldn't expect it to be looking like it's been plate raped....

That Mini van is certainly clean, but it is definately not concourse

I agree. A lot of the under bonnet area is a bit scruffy to be honest and underneath isn't £34k standard. Added to which the colour is fuggin' awful.

I noticed this in the background of one of the photos:

Bought a couple of weeks ago at auction for 9 grand, now on his lot for 15 grand. Not a bad profit for sticking your hand in the air is it?

Right. I'm gonna ask the wise AS eBaying heads; what the fuck is going on here?

The R21 Turboshed that I had a vague notion for, a) has a bid of £600, which stretches credulity and B) has essentially been relisted before the original listing ended.

New pics, the location's shifted to 5 miles up the road, and now he wants to keep the alloys if it doesn't make £900?

How does one check the details of a particular listing? 'Cos I know some of you guys go to impressive lengths to find out info from eBay, I'm just not sure how to do it.

But by patronising and insulting the intelligence of a collective forum in the first post, no favours were really done there. Like David Brent says, always start with a joke.

It has had a 1.7 engine fitted by Pumabuild but still 1.4 on the logbook

Bad Points: Has no mot or tax.

Has a problem with locking (it doesn't)

Advertised else where so can remove at any time

Although you won't be, unless it's the Police. Appropriate numberplate, too. £1250

Everything about that car screams STAY AWAY! in a very lod voice. Listed before but 'didn't realise he's left things out' means it probably didn't make what he wanted, or something like that.

Also why the f*ck was he buying new alloy wheels when the trubo is knackered and there's other problems with the car? He might as well just tell 99% of eBay not to bid on it.

Re: That Moke.

(20 minutes to change to left hand drive)

Can they really be converted to LHD in 20 minutes?

The convicted shyster Tim Dutton* boasts of being asked by AR to be the importer of the Portuguese built Mokes, and that they then discontinued them due to build quality issues, anyone know if there's any truth to that claim?

DUTTON/MOKE Dutton was asked by Austin Rover in the late 80's to import the Portuguese built Mini Moke. Dozens were sold thru the Dutton showroom in Worthing then Austin Rover decided that their manufacturing plant in Lisbon was not producing cars to a high enough standard, so they shut the factory. Rather ironic as the Moke was one of the only cars that Austin Rover made that anyone actually wanted to own.
