What does the '14' denote? Or does he mean 1.4?

Either way most of us will see at least a couple of these a week in the UK.

Posted

Yep, 14 denotes a 1.4. Just to help* matters some (diesel) BXs were badged as TGD but the T didn't stand for turbo, it was a trim option iirc. Never had a 1.4 but here they are surprisingly good to drive and pretty mega on fuel as well.

yeah it's BX14 and it does mean engine size.BX16,BX17 and BX19 are all engine sizes.

edit : beaten to it by a Cavalier expert.

THNX GUISE.

Anyone going to start a bidding war on this one then?!

My bro had a bx14 in the mid 1980's I am pretty sure it was y reg which would have made it an early one, had thunderbirds dash which was ace and it was baby blue.

He drove the arse of it and it somehow managed to keep up with him pretty well.

Don't think we got any BXs earlier than an A plate. A 14 is super povo spec! Most BXs at least have some sort of trim level after the numbers. Actual value probably £300 if I'm being generous.

You do need a genuine reason (aliens, dog ate my homework, I didn't know she was only 14 now then now then etc etc)

Apologies for tedious dullness but I suspect they called it a 17 because an 18 seemed pointlessly close to a 19. 1769cc, so the 'round up' rule does apply. Over-ruled by marketing I suspect during a heated, Gallois-fuelled debate. Same engine in a Rover resulted in the 218 badge. I might buy one and change the badge to 217 as a protest and such disrespect of French thinking.

It must be about the only example of rounding down an engine size that should be rounded up. There are enough examples of rounding up- Chrysler Sunbeam 1.0 (928cc), Audi 2.2 (2144cc) and PSA 1.8 (1749cc) are the only ones I can think of offhand but I'm sure there are plenty more.

anything with a rover 3500 V8. I think it was actually 3528cc

That's correct though, under 50 should be rounded down and over 50 should be rounded up.

Fiat 127 CL 1050, was actually a 1049cc - Can we let them off with 1cc?

(And the 127 1300 GT had a 1301cc lump...Maybe that's where the 1050's missing cc went... :P )

I can only think of one other example where the engine size was wrongly rounded down, as Trig pointed out. That's the Morris Minor 1000 which was latterly available with a 1098cc (ie Minor 1100) engine.

Don't want to drag this further off topic especially as it's not even Autoshite(but I will) but I believe the current BMW 116d actually has a 2 litre engine Shirley that's the most "downbadged" car ever?

And completely the opposite but not unrelated there was a brief time I thought the Lancia Thema 8.32 had an 8.32 litre engine - then I thought it was 8 cylinder 3.2 litre whereas it actually means something random like 8 cylinder 32 valve and it's a 3 litre - very confusing, it should really be the Thema 8.32.3.0 - although just looked it up and it's 2927cc so should really be a 8.32.2.9. It's still awesome though.

Anyway, back on topic...

Also knock about £11.5k off the price.

funny thing is it clearly isnt a money earner,as i know where that van came from, and the seller has bought it within the last 2 or 3 weeks......

for less than 2k im sure,so not a bad mark up(ridiculous and pointless as it is) for something that he has clearly just had the logbook back for.

I wonder how he came to the £12-15k per year earning potential for stag/ hen nights etc?

That's right - a trotter van an essential ingredient of a good stag night.

Christ on a bike it looks the remainder of one of those wanky Beetle based 911 lookalikes that was assembled by a muppet and left out in the sun to melt... what a waste.

We first clapped our sore eyes on that back in Feb.

It was a highlight of Ebay Tat Volume 2. Same old photos.

Rocky Aoki died four years ago. Go on someone, get it imported. It would go well with that chopped Ital.
