Buy my Cougar!

X reg, 2.5 V6 "X pack" job. Taxed til the end of March but it's only got a months mot left on it. Silver, black leather, everything works, appears to have some service history, CD changer, aircon, heated seats.

Drives quite well really. There's a clunk from the rear somewhere and occasionally it makes that Mondeo clack when you wind it from lock to lock. Engine seems to be sweet in it and it'll sit on the motorway all day at average rep speeds and do 33 mpg while it's at it. There's a very slight chuff from the exhaust occasionally (inaudible from inside the car, even with the window open), probably a gasket in the early stages of blow.

It had a hole in the sill when I bought it which meant I had the rot cut out and new metal let in. As it's a cheap motah I just blew it in with a rattle can. It's not that obvious a repair but it's not gonna win any concours events. Tyres are all ok, brakes aren't super brilliant but it stops ok.

£450.

It's in Liverpool. Anyone interested before I chuck it on ebay?

Nice car, not much money. Am glad that it is nearly 200 miles away from me, I do mean that as a positive thing by the way otherwise I would be tempted. The low price of these isn't going to stay that way forever.

GLWTS.

These things seem to have slipped under the radar, they look quite nice along side Pumas, and look quite Mondeo-solid.

X Pack? Does it have wide arches and triple carbs?

Posted

I've had two of these now and must say you really get a lot of car for the money..

When I bought my first one I was looking for a non rusty puma but it would have been easier to find the holy grail so went for the cougar instead as these seem to be better put together and don't suffer the rot issues..

Yours is the best spec and has the manual box which I find really helps with the economy so you shouldn't have much trouble selling the old girl..

What does it say about me that one of these wasn't even an option when I read the title?

First these:post-17414-0-34925600-1386667384_thumb.jpg

Sort of wish I'd had one of these rather than my Puma (which rusted like fucking fuckery). Sadly until little one is older a 3 door will be fucking awful to live with daily, and by that time the OMGOLDSKOOLFORDTAX may have caught up too much to bother with.

IIRC, BBC Radio Two's Alex Lester owned one of those about ten years ago (until it got written off), which he referred to as the "Ford Mid-Life Crisis" :D

I like these. Had a T plate 2 litre one I paid £1500 for in 2007-8 and it was unburstable. Stood up to my abuse for a good couple of years anyway needing very little, and lived on after I sold it in late 2010 until this summer according to the DVLA reg checker thing. Was a bit sad to see it come up as "Vehicle cannot be found" when I was bored and looking up some of my old motor's reg numbers a couple of months ago.

Stylish beast with Mondeo reliability. My main grumble was uncomfy seats - I always wanted leather - and also the fact that only the very rare auto came with a cruise control option.

The sunroofs are the other achilles heel - they had plastic runners ALL of which broke after only a few months, and Ford refused to do a recall as it wasn't "safety critical". If you google "cougar sunroof" you'll see pages and pages of woe from owners who like me had to seal theirs shut.

If I wasnt loving my MG ZT so much right now I'd be knocking your door for this, especially since its an X plate and falls into the old tax category, avoiding the OMG U DRIVE A V6 U BABY SEAL KILLER tax banding had it been a few months newer

Not a single bite. Nothing. This has surprised me somewhat. I feel like that bloke with the white 405 - but without the watchers.

To be fair its a pretty dead time of year to be selling old motors. Most people have got too much other stuff to be thinking about/ shelling out on

Nice car

Nice price

But what Monsieur le Bourse says. Wrong time of year. Plus I have just bought a Cherry. Still, if I bin the Micra in the OMGSNOKAOS then its worth a thought.

I get amazed when people offer a car up here, then get amazed when it doesn't sell within a week. I mean, how many of us are there here? Not that many really, and most of us already have too much old rammel as it is. I'd quite like a Cougar, but no money means no chance at the moment.

It'll break for more than the asking price. I just thought I'd offer it here before dealing with the mongs of eBay.

This is the place where folk like to champion the under dogs of the motoring world isn't it? Where unfashionable motors are lauded? That's why I offered it on here. It's an old Ford with zero "scene tax" for anyone to complain about.

Still. Couple of years time when these things get rare no doubt a thread will appear with "I didn't buy one of those for £450" type smugness. :)

Supposedly - although I wonder sometimes. I think it depends on who you are.

Careful.  Just because we don't happen to want to buy that car this week doesn't necessarily make us hypocritical arseholes.

Pete, it's good to have had first refusal and I genuinely hope you get a decent price without being mucked around by eBay tossers.  GLWTS.

It should go. I reckon a track day loon would probably love it.

Posted

Pete, I would lob it in the echo or on gumtree before putting it on ebay - the mouthbreathers will want a full ticket and a pro paint job on the sill and still haggle over the price.

As for being a track car it's a possibility, I would'nt stick it on Retro rides either.

I am not convinced anybody has EVER sold a car on there - you will get the "will you swap it for an almera/saab/jimmy Saville onesie etc" but no cash.

I think the cougar is a damn sight more interesting than a V6 mondeo.

Remember gents, it's the season of goodwill, peace to all men etc. Where else would you find a princess on lotus wheels, series 1 SD1's and a gold royale coupe? It's all here in glorious technicolour.

Sold the Golf on Retro-Rides, but then it was the perfect place to try and sell it really. I've sold more cars on here but a lot of it is down to luck. The Saab 9000 I had a while back took AGES to find a home. That was a fully historied, one-owner car with 124k of cherished miles under it and an asking price of less than £500 IIRC.

I've sold loads of shiz on R-R and really rate it, specially for the price. They ACTUALLY MANAGE THE BOARD and weed out shit adverts, spam, flame wars etc. Its a fucking brilliant service for £0.

Posted

^^ unlike auto trader for example who charge £15+++ and do not manage their stuff at all, hence the hundreds of £199 (REAL PRICE £6599) bomb site car lot wankers selling stuff on there without paying for a proper ad.

It is worth a try on the blue forum, i had my 735i on here and a few other places but the only interest i had was on the blue. It was a lad on there that bought it in the end (unfortunately only to engine rape it, but i got money in my pocket and one less car to try to fund.)

I've bought and sold a few cars on the blue forum, there are lots of people looking to swap shit cars though.

Cars I expect to sell quickly on RR never do though, My Saab 900 was on there for months before I got someone interested in buying (not swapping) but my Daihatsu Mira sold very quickly.

I'll take it!!!

Bah, too late.

I tell you what's killing it imho.

1) Time of year

2) Short MOT

3) Price.

4) It's a sports car.

Adjust any of them (especially the second one and if not then the third) and you'll increase the chance of selling it. It's a 'toy' car, not a family runabout so the chances of someone wanting a winter runner are decreased slightly, again the short MOT makes this worse.

Not having a pop, just saying it how I see it.

I'd be reluctant to use ebay, too Pete. Gumtree, car and classic, preloved R-R* and swapz are all free, and even if you get some idiots, it's easy to just fuck them off. I also reckon a short test and the time of year will hold it back.

*I've bought and sold a few cars on R-R, and although there may be a few "swap for a rusty cocksocket" buffoons, it only takes one serious buyer.
