So I bought a bit of autoshite

Basically needed a cheap run around

, almost bought a Saxo vtr... But why on earth would I do that when I could get a manky old escort

2 previous owners, first had it for years from new, even have the original bill of sale.. Next owner was a learner driver

It's a bit knackered.. The 1.1 hcs engine is shagged.. I mean it is unless some autoshiter has a genius bodge?

It's completely standard even down to the factory radio (yes radio without tape)

Maybe in the future I might think about zetecs or cvh engines but for now I just need to be mobile

So I have bought a 1300 endura-e ka engine for £40 and will be enlisting the help of my mate who is a whizz with fords to give me a hand..

From what I have managed to research the engine should be a straight fit physically, my only fear is that I keep reading the inlet manifold won't fit (but this seems to be relating to the single point injection system, not the carb) so we will see, and see if we can bodge

Hey, that's class! What's wrong with the engine?

Hey, that's class! What's wrong with the engine?

I guess you didn't play the vid then. It's shat its bottom end out by the sound of it

Posted

You see it sounds like it is coming from the top, but then again I suppose it's a short engine, so it could be the bottom end

I thought it was e top, but it's actually running nicely on all 4

That looks pretty tidy! I think thats a 'bonus' special. At least thats what my dad retuerned from the ford dealers with that same year sporting the same wheeltrims and interior.

Posted

So you've literally blown your Bonus?

Posted

These valencia things always were noisy on the top end..but that sounds like a much more "meatier" knocking than just valvegear. combine that with the oil light on at low revs and its gotta be knackered bottom end bearings.

Posted

Do you think it's fixable quickly on my back on the floor?

Like shells, socket set and go?

Posted

If the bearings have said goodnight, think of all the nice bits floating about inside the engine waiting to 'bed in' the new bearings ! Might be lucky, but won't be a long term fix; quicker to drop the replacement engine in .

Great color btw

You're going to struggle to make "one out of two" on the engine front. Different generations completely. Try to find an older engine.

Posted

I have done a lot of research on the engine front.. Obviously if anyone has an older engine I will give it a go

If the worst comes to the worst you should be able to sell it on easy as it's a two door, there is demand for all two door Escorts these MKIV two doors can go on to re-shell an XR or RS and they do use them in rallying also.  It's not worth MKI/MKII money but as these are getting very thin on the ground now the MKIII/MKIV is the way forward.

I also love the colour, I remember seeing the odd few in this shade.

I had a MKIV 1.4 back in 1997/1998 and it went well was nice enough to drive, trouble free and pretty quick.

Thats how my G-reg Sterling ended up sounding.

A Bonus 90 with its original wheeltrims, class in a glass. I'd suggest an engine from an early mk3 Fester, pre 1993. As AR said the Ka engine is too different. Albeit with the same roots. For a start its single point injection.

Posted

I was hoping to fit the carb system to it... Or bike carbs?

Will it really not fit? I think the ka engine is mpi

I have seen threads where people have put it in fiestas

From what I read the hcs engine and the endura-e are pretty similar.. I think the Valencia is slightly different?

What about if I put the hcs head on the endura?

Posted

Classy trims on these, they suit the paint hue well too.

Surely the purchase of a complete 2nd hand donkey to drop in the front is the way to go, just think of the spares pile if nothing else.

There's 20 years and two redesigns between the Valencia and the Endura-E. Physically mounting it in the car should be straightforward but making it run with a carb and dizzy is likely to require lots of fabrication.

Having said that, unless one of us has actually done the job, it's all internet postulation. I suggest you get out there and compare the two units side-to-side : is the inlet port spacing the same ? is there a blanked-out hole for a dizzy in the Endura block ? I suspect the answer to both questions will be 'no', but you may be lucky.

That wheel trim and colour combo is amazing.

Stop fighting and put. 2litre Zetec in. On bike carbs. That won't idle. Then sell it as a drift project.

Yes, that engine is toast, which amazes me, someone must have ran it out of oil.

A few years ago someone I knew ran a D reg Escort Estate with one of those engines in (1.3)

When he first got it it had just been serviced and had 12,000 miles on it.

A few years later we went and towed it back as it made a horrible noise then stopped.

It then spun over very fast on the starter with no signs of life.

When we got a look at it, it was obvious that none of the valves moved when the engine was turned.

Next step was to check the timing chain, in there we discovered that the sprocket on the camshaft had come loosethen fallen off and the chain was lying in the bottom of the case.

We then took the head off and looked inside, the bores looked ok  so we dicided to order a camshaft, sprocket and new chain.

We made a hole in the inner wing to slide the camshaft out of the block after jambing the tappets to stop them falling out.

The Sprocket mounting bolts had split the boss on the camshaft as it rattled around.

I took the sump plug out and nothing at all came out, we thought this strange as the dipstick showed the oil to be between the full and empty mark.

I then dropped the sump and was amazed to find what used to be oil sitting in there in a big blob like thick treacle.

We left the sump tipped on it's side overnight over a drain tray and by morning the goo had never moved, we scraped it out with a paint scaper

then washed the sump in the parts washer.

The speedo now read 87,000 miles and it had never been touched in any way since he bought it.

We put it back together, new filters, oil , plugs and clean coolant.

The oil filter was solid with the black goo and was very heavy and rusty on the outside.

That engine started and ran , like a tractor, as it always had and when I last seen that old Escort it had done 130,000 and was still running, but was on borrowed time due to rust on the inner wings and sills.

Talk about tough, only an old design engine would survive this sort of neglect.

Something with a timming belt would have died long before 87,000, probably snapping the timing belt when the cam siezed.

Blimey. That is a Hardy engine. Wonder how long it was running on treacle/no oil.

Jbz2079 a few years back I bought a cvh escort that had died of black death it seized the cam and snapped the belt which in turn bent valves, so cleaned the bottom end out, popped on a spare head and a good un again, father fordperv drove it around for 3 years then got rid not bad for a car that owed £80 in total and cost nothing to get through m.o.ts

Nice buy!

Back in the late 1990s a rather attractive girl on my college course had one of these. 3 door shell in black, F reg with those wheel trims. May have had the tappetty 1.3 engine?

Coincidentally, the M reg Escort diesel saloon I bought off my dad's drinking buddy in 2010 had the same wheel trims. They looked alright on it at a distance but were badly cracked and held on with plastic ties so they went straight into the bin.

So I sold it, i kind if wanted to fit a fakkkin zetec, interestingly it's on eBay already with the broken engine having just been cleaned... Apparently he has taken it in from an old dear who forgot to oil it...

It's all very sad, but I'm not sentimental with cars or very loyal

I got a new bit of autoshite it's a 1994 316 1600cc of pure power

Guna git sum angle eyez nd sum m3 skirtz it's pritty much az quik as an m3 init gunna stick on an diction kit and peco
