'88 Mg Maestro 2.0i

Hi all,

Haven't posted here in while, mainly down to me having nothing to report, but in the last few months I got a new job meaning I had more money to spend on shite. In true autoshite style I came to the conclusion that the money burning a hole in my pocket was best spent on another car and not finishing my Metro project. Thoughts turned immediately to another Metro, this time in MG flavour with no reasonable MGs appearing at a reasonable price I took an interest in a 1990 1275 Rover Metro. With only 15,000 miles from new and in moonraker blue and with the bonus of cheese graters alloys I was drawn in very easily, the £500 price tag also helped, within a heartbeat I phoned up the salvage company that were selling and paid up, with the car being 450 miles away I got on shiply and organised recovery. So with the collection day looming I get an ominous voicemail saying there's a problem with the car. So long story short it turns out that the car has been scrapped at the DVLA and the sale is off.

So as soon as the money was refunded I was straight back to ebay and noticed this honey up forsale with 9 months MOT and tax with 51,000 miles from new and rather rust arches and rear quarter panels, what could go wrong? the buy it now button was hit straight away I arranged collection for the next week.

Luckily rust free wings and quarter panels were included in the sale and will hopefully be fitted early in the new year.

The car handled the 100 mile journey home without a hitch, as it has the further 3,500 miles that it has covered in the two months I have had it, it truly is a great car.

So now I will let the pictures do most of the talking.

Here is what I like to call a "peeping tom Maestro photo"

And another....

So mainly the past two months the car has taken me back and fore to work during the week and spent the weekend enjoying some of the great highland scenery like this.

I can confirm that these are a total hoot.  I literally couldn't drive it without a grin on my chops.  Not bad for an emergency replacement!  I kept it for almost three years too, only replacing it with a Volvo estate.

I got informed about a "spares" Maestro on a farm near by....

But good news a Ledbury may be joining the fleet soon, if everything goes to plan.

That does look nice, and after my brief dalliance with a Maestro last year I wouldn't mind and MG one myself.

I looked at that very car about a year ago at thainstone auctions. It was being offered with no mot and appeared to have been off the road for a wee while. I realised that getting nostalgic over red seat belts was no reason forva man who cant weld to bid for it.well saved.

That is lovely. I always found them a total hoot to drive

Lovely. That looks like Lynx Bronze - a pretty rare colour. My dad had a Montego that shade.

Absolutely delightful.

After being scared shi witless in a Turbo and barely able to get up hills in a 1.3, this is definitely the pick of the litter for me.

The red Montego estate is also big fat phwooarr.

Brilliant! My mate had an early one (1600?) years back and that was an ace car.

Thats lovely that is.

One of these needs to be in the Calendar thread!

Top work sir!

If ever I'm able to move the Ax along, one of these would certainly be on the possibilities list.

Hi J44,

So glad to see that on here. Nearly bought that in the summer, but after being sent close ups of the wheel arches I got scared off. With no garage or car welding experience I thought it was just a bit too exciting* for me.

It does look like an absolute honey though. As Dollywobbler said that colour on MG Maestros is mega rare, it was only offered for 1 year... 'Strata Grey'. Combined with the plastic wheeltrims and a tow bar, you've got some very desirable shite there. Enjoy it!

The maestro looks a steal for the price and its great that your getting some use out of one of greatest but underrated 80s hot hatches on some lovely roads.

The only thing for perfection would be the holy grail of the maestro world the talking dash.

Like it. Just been nosing round a few Maestro's at the NEC, my mate did his apprenticeship at a BL dealer and rated them, oil leaks apart. I found a 1.6SL with velour, electric windows and digital dash and he said "they were a decent well equipped car for their day".

Correct. I know ONE other Strata Grey MM and it's a Montego 2.0i. Look after it - and never ever respray it! Look forward to seeing it at some point next year
