19 Years of Tin Snail - Back to normality

.

..I wonder - would the number plate not look neater under the bumper, in front of the white box - to leave the bonnet less cluttered ?

No.

It looks gopping awful. I have no idea why anyone would do it, but they do.

There is a space on the bonnet for the plate and the plate looks best there :P

New video update. There may be noise. I may make odd sounds.

Good update vid. My only criticism would be the lack of adventure hat on the run up the driveway.

FINISHED!

Annoyingly, I ran out of light, but she's mostly back together, and is now MOT ready! Haven't got the back seat and rear seat belts fitted at the moment. I'll do that on Friday if I have time.

So, today has seen me jump into the ZX and drive to Sparrow Automotive in Hereford. This made the ZX very dirty.

There, I collected an offside rear wing from my pal Joey, plus some rear seat brackets (mine still have rotten bits of inner wing stuck to them, and seized bolts). Then it was gung-ho back home, where I arrived at about half one, had a very quick lunch and got back to the garage.

I had to drill holes in the C post for the new wing, drill holes in the bonnet for the number plate bolts (tape not sufficient it seems) and then get the wing fitted, plus the small panels above the front wings, fit the seat belts (and the reinforcement plates), fit a bonnet catch receiver, fit the nearside rear door's window, fit both rear doors and sort out a failed indicator warning lamp (not technically required on a 2CV, but I do have one, and it wasn't working - connector had come off). I definitely did not have an illicit test drive.

So, now she sits in the garage awaiting her test on Friday morning. EXCITING TIMES.

Happily, it's bright red. It will be getting painted the same colour as the front wings at some point* in the future. There's quite a bit of stuff on the Stage 2 list. I've also only undersealed the seams and areas I know are weak points so far. Not had chance to do the box sections yet (still!) and she could really do with a service if she's going to clock up over 500 miles this weekend (which is the plan).

I think Citroën themselves omitted this after the 1985 model range, or thereabouts. Along with many more cost savings.

The shape of the front wings changed subtly down the years, find a pair of 60s ones and the front vertical surface is much more angled backwards, so a less bluff to the air.

Both mine had them - c and d reg, so did assume all did. I stand corrected!

Good luck with the mot. I've never done tan hill as I think it far too long a journey for a day trip. Have fun!

I'm certainly not going it as a day trip this year! At least one overnight, perhaps two. Did do it as a day trip the last time I did it, from Cambridgeshire, though I cheated by driving to Hawes and joining the route there.

Thanks. I seem to be doing better than the six months it took last time, though that was with the car 20 miles away from my house last time...

Yup, top marks for cracking along with the reassembly, especially in these temps. Looking good!

You do know that you don't need a back seat for the test, don't you?

Indeed I do, but it'll be quieter with the seat fitted, and I need to keep an eye on the weekend's plans, not just the test.

2CV people (with the exception of me) are MAD, Finish putting it together Thursday - MOT Friday - Tan Hill Sunday!

Nice work, will keep my fingers crossed for the MOT! Weather doesn't look too horrendous for the weekend either, amazingly.

That will disappoint them!

Possibly. A few days before we drove the 2CV to Switzerland, the engine was in bits as we replaced a cylinder head. Nowt like a deadline to focus the mind!

When she passes on Friday (famous last words), you can once again Wobble your Dolly. Good Luck Ian

Thanks folks. I'm ridiculously nervous. I will head to the garage in a bit to see if I can get the nearside rear tail-light working consistently. It needs a tap at the moment. Not ideal. Also need to tighten up the fog light bracket. 1030 tomorrow is when the test should be occurring.

Oooh exciting, it's not me bricking it at an mot this time! F5age shall occur at 11. 45am then tomorrow!

I hope I can update from the garage. Handily, though it's in a mobile dead zone, it's also where our community bus offices are, so I can get into the wi-fi.

Just had a last fettle. The rear seat can't go back in, because the holes in the new inner wings are tapped for an M6 thread. I don't have any M6 bolts, as nothing on a 2CV is M6! It's mostly M7, with the odd bit of M5, M10 and M12. Oh well. No biggie.

The rear lamp that occasionally needs a tap to operate turned out to have a duff bulb, so that was an easy fix.

I've been following this thread for a while now and it's great to see it all come together now.

Good luck for the MOT tomorrow!

an MOT pass will surely become the most liked post of 2017 so far! Good luck.
