The 600 would be my choice out of that lot.  For one thing, dull Jap interiors can't compete with a nicely appointed Rover one IMO.  Two hours spent inside a 623GSi every day would be a pleasure!

Ditto. I really must own one. They're on the cusp of classic insurance, so I'm sure it won't be long. I like Honda engineering, I like Rover class. Winning combo.

40mpg? My BX 16v managed it (once), my 2.3-litre Saab 9000 an impressive 34 on average, and I'm no dawdler.

Are any of these available at that price with cruise control?

The Rover 600 certainly was in GSi form.

Primera Sri. 2.0 16v twin cam weapon. Owned one and really loved the thing. However you are never going to better 30mpg to be honest.

Just get that Carlton bought, I can't think of anything more suitable

What about the £250 Cav and £200 Vectra CD in the eBay thread?

Blimey some qualz suggestions coming out the mondeo dashboard 'wood' work

Desperately trying to think of my own wildcard suggestion here so how about...... An early Toyota Avensis.....................................

1.8 or 2.0, lots of toys, disgustingly reliable and easily mistaken for an unlicensed minicab, does it get any better?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Avensis-1-8-GS-ESTATE-1998-S-REG-FULL-12-MONTHS-MOT-TAXED-/200950282441?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2ec991f8c9

Rover 600 = win.

I had a very early (jan 94) 620i on an L plate. Povo spec - elec front windows, glass sunroof, cental locking.

Some povo spec ones dont have folding rear seats which can be a PITA when you need to go to B&Q.

Later cars dont suffer with crusty arches like the early ones - this is why mine got moved on.

Got up to 38 mpg on a run - car got a bit ragged when driven quickly over uneven surfaces. Regularly broke courtesy light switches because they are so substantial.

Have you considered a 2.0 laguna with a manual box - the ones up to X reg? I had one with the auto - the box was the only bad thing on the car.

For even greater win, what about a granada with the twink I4 engine? Prices at rock bottom, even on retro rides.

Dont think I could face a Carisma although I wouldnt mind trying that GDi engine, i hear its a bit cantankerous but capable of good MPG's. Are these basically a shit-looking Volvo S40?

Dreadful cars. Utterly reliable, but more boring than being stuck in a lift for a week with Jeremy Clarkson and being forced to listen to U2 records.

These are ace- I had a V6 one and it was surprisingly excellent.

Fuck me thats ugly. I am not saying I wouldn't but it would only be at 1.50 am and because it all the fitter ones were already taken.

Do some googling on GDi's... dekokes and walnuts shells may feature, as well as Volvo warranty claims......

I know you'd prefer a 2.0. But 1.8 8v Cavalier's are bomb proof, and you should get 35mpg out of it.
