Private Life of the Ford Cortina

Noticed our very own Trigger has uploaded the Arena documentary from 1982 about the demise of the Cortina starring Alexei Sayle.  Apologies if he's already posted about this and I've missed it! Spent a very happy 45 minutes sat in front of the laptop watching...

Highlight for me is about 14 minutes in where there's an interview with the fleet manager of EMI talking about why the company chooses cortinas.

High ranking managers were treated to the delights of the 1300 base mk4 or 5... Not exactly a huge incentive to bring in the sales....

Superb. Well worth watching. Maybe if you made it to Director level at EMI they would let you have a 2.0 GL? 8)

Been looking for this programme ever since I was made aware of its existence in the mid-1990s. I look forward to watching it at some point in the near future :)

The two things I remember from when the programme was first aired are the Mastermind clip and tooSavvy's home movie. It's hard to imagine 100k being much of a milestone these days but it was a massive mileage for a private car back then.

Aye, tekks mebakk.....

The car had been thru more hands than the [EX... wife] and probably been clocked.... digits never lined up fully!!

Damn losing the piccie of "over the top".... we drove along the back road by the house once or twice to get the 99 >> 00..... proper naff lol. :<)

I have put a more detailed "how its done" on the 'Sweeney Lounge - Secret Life of the Ford Cortina'. Handle > Lurker

Can I just point out that the Mondeo has been in production for very nearly as long as the Cortina was. Are we feeling old now?

How does it feel watching this video again Savvy after all these years? If you ever fancy trying out a Mk3 Cortina again and comparing it to your Proton you'd be more then welcome to take mine for a spin.

If the Mondeo went out of production tomorrow, it's hard to imagine the any mainstream channel showing a 45 minute long documentary about it. Men&Motors might knock out something using a Hi8 Sharp Viewcam.

The Mondeo's never really won the hearts of the nation in the way the Cortina did. Not because its a bad car - just changed days I suppose. Even the Escort name died off without much fanfare a decade or so ago.

Did you keep the Cortina much longer after this was filmed toosavvy?? Looked in decent nick!

well.... we had the auld girl for a bit after. Did sills and two (sourced via breaker) decent wings & rear arches.

Moved on to a couple, in Dinnington, who knew nowt about cars...hmm = no further MOTs :<(

FiL chipped in with a cash brand new [Y] TALBOT Samba..... see, thats why I show some interest in other threads .... as we got the 'time to trade' nod from our friendly MOTer.

Unexcusable bag o'shite, Samba..... FiL punted it in for a Brand new CRAPI 1.6L basic [no sunroof] & we bought a Bootlip spoiler... better :<)

FiL bigger P.I.T.A. than [EX]BallnChain..........

Thanks Trig. I've just seen it, what a great film. It's got everything: casual sexism, casual racism, sales reps, modifiers... and Betjeman was an unexpected treat.

Posted

I watched it in 1982 but not since. I remember the Mark 1 Cortina being crushed at the end.

Thanks, it 'says video unavailable' on YT now.

Dailymotion it is then.

That blue pickup is awesome! Why cant chavs do that with corsas and polos rather than scene them up the way they do?

Looking forwards to watching this tonight with a takeaway and bottle of wine (even though I don't have a proper Cortina :-P ) It'll be a treat* for my wife too...

I just watched it at work. My manager came over and saw the paused video in the corner of the screen, and is I think watching it now!

Fairly sure the pickup is still around, think it appeared on ebay not too long ago, I think it's red now, but it was in a bad way.

Can't watch the video at work, but what's special about the pickup?

Really glad to have found this again, many thanks!   I sat and watched it first time round with my parents the day before they emigrated - a strangely poignant end-of-an-era moment.   They had just sold their Opel Rekord and I had a Simca 1100 van.  Happy days!
