Right, I'll fire this probably wank thread off then.

I don't understand the animosity towards these....

Obv. not everyone on here hates them, but in general they do seem to be fairly despised and I don't get it. They're quite a laugh to drive, can be used daily, parts supply is good and done properly they can look quite cool if modified properly.

I say 'what's not to like'?

*Fuck the photo posting on here with a big fucky thing.

I guess because they're one of the stereotypical flat-cap classics (like Sherpa coupes?) with the fatal combination of being a. not rare, and b. admired by the mainstream.

Posted

I hate them, almost as much as Beetles, but not quite.

I don't know why, I just don't like them. They remind me of series Land Rovers, but without the off road capabilities, slow noisy vague steering and crap brakes.

Posted

Steering was ok on them I thought. Rat and Pigeon at least.

Moggie Minors remind me of my elderly spinster headmistress Aunt Beatrice. They were all she ever drove. Therefore they remind me of Nuns, shite days out to Formby and being petrified by her total lack of spacial awareness.

Other than Nic Mann's one, I have no urge to ever own or indeed travel in one again.

On 05-Jun-13 at 05:26:59 BST, seller added the following information:

I've just noticed ebay has the listing as a morris minor 1000. It's actually 1275cc.

looks okay for the money

I dont like morris minors, or mgbs, or spitfires, or sprites and midgets and I speculate it is because in the early 1980s thats what filled the pages of 'practical classics' - my only portal to classic car-ness and they seemed so boring

Minors are ok but the A40 farina was a much better car with the same running gear. They are common as muck though if you're going to have a classic why not give yourself a challenge. Either an Austin 7 that is scary as hell to drive or go really mad and buy something french, a panhard anyone ? Still scary to drive if you get a 24 tigre a 100mph car that weighs nowt held together by very little most of it rubber mounted as it rattles so much

I don't hate them, tbh I don't really have much of an opinion save for the fact theres a lot of them at almost every car show which can be a little wearing I suppose.

I'm just not particularly enthused by them. Probably they are a bit too old to be of proper interest to me I guess.

Hating them is like hating prostitutes or clouds.

Theyre everywhere.

Just because you see them every day, it doesnt mean you shouldnt try and possess one.

Posted

Are you kidding? I'd fucking love to own a prostitute.

Posted

I recon I quite like them as I always have a pang of regret when I see some roof chopped one on eBay with shite flames licking up

The side.

I saw a tidy one today at Enza Mercedes Benz Truck Centre, tastefully modded and something I'd happily roll in.

I remember spending Xmas 1998 bombing around in a late wood framed Traveller that I sold to a guy who liked opposite the Meat Market on Prescot Rd in Liverpool, he spent a fortune restoring it and I know he still owned it five years ago when I last saw it.

Exactly my view. Can't imagine ever wanting to own one but at the same time I can't say I have the animosity towards them that I do for, say, Beetles...

I just realised that ALL Morris Minors are younger than me. Isag Iseg  the designer chappie was still trying to put a two cyl engine in them when I was started.

I didn't realise lots of people hated these, that's quite sad.

A lady friend of mine would like a Minor but since I've introduced her to all manner of other old cars, she's coming round to the fact that the Minor is not the be all and end all of old cars.  For me they're far too ubiquitous and though I don't despise them, I do have a pathological need to own stuff that no-one else owns and is a bastard to get bits for.

I appreciate them in the same way as I do a lot of other 50s and 60s British tin, but I just can't get enthusiastic about something that is everywhere.  I suppose that's the case with most of us here.  In some ways we are the cognoscenti; we know about the Lancias, Renaults, Borgwards, Fiats, Datsuns etc and we are not afraid of them.  I say let others play safe and have a sanitised cla**ic car experience and we'll be all the richer from our ability to see past the obvious choices.

fek i thought i was the only one who remembered that :D

I like them and If I could only have one car outside the house it might be one.

As it is though I have 3 cars so can in theory happily wait weeks for some obscure part to arrive,  In practice I find myself looking at them on ebay at those times when all 3 of my cars are broken at once :)

Suitably amusing.

I often see an MM pootling about my local area, and they do nowt for me.

Wheezy, noisy engine with driveshafts about as thick and strong as a 2B pencil, and a body style that is an 'acquired taste'.

That said, it's great to see any old shed still on the roads. #propergaugesteel

I would like a Traveller version (preferably fitted with one of these though)

But you know, I would be equally as happy with the A series.

But has to be the Woody, not the Nurse Gladys edition.

Minor steering shouldn't be vague. I find Minors frustrating. I love the looks, simplicity and exhaust note but they feel proper flimsy to drive thanks to the archair back axle and 'knitting needle in a bucket of spark plugs' gearchange. I much prefer 2CVs at the end of the day.
