My russet brown allegro

Collected one of BL's finest tonight.

Only managed a puckle pics in the semi dark and rain.

 

 

 

 

It came with a folder full of docs including the original new sales invoice

Bought from Motor Delivery Co Ltd, Darlington for £2850. The buyer traded in an '74 allegro 1300 for £975.

 

Also in the folder is every mot and lots of invoices for servicing and parts.

 

I'm almost more excited about the folder than I am the car.

 

There are a couple of crusty bits on the wings but first Impressions are very good.

As little as possible, Deluxe was generally povo spec in 1970s cars.

This has to be an age thing for me. When I was younger I utterly detested them, in fact, im of that generation that saw Allegros as nothing more than British built Skoda skips.

Now? Like Skodas ( especially a nice coupe) Id absolutely LOVE to own one, particularly an early (ish) twin carb 1750cc jobbie.

Only been in one and that was in the spring of 1976, the last day of being in Primary school, and it was a load of us kids being taken to the local swimming pool by our headmistress in her M reg Harvest Gold model ( quartic wheel ) which felt very posh and very modern.

Thats another car i must own before i pop my cloggs.

Trying to get pics from my phone to this ipad seems to involve sending them via Pluto riding a glacier

 

Here are some that have successfully made the interstellar journey.

 

After giving it a wash down, the extent to which the paint had oxidised became apparent. I spent most of the day towelling half a bottle of T-cut on and off.

One application later and it's still a bit cloudy but my elbow had run out of grease by that point. I must get one of those polishing mop jobs. Maybe I'll have another go tomorrow.

 

I gave the interior a spruce up too. Please note the fitted shag pile. There was even a spare yard rolled up in the boot.

My 12 year old asked innocently, "why does it say rustin' on the back?"

 

It was interesting to see people's reactions to the allegro. My brother got excited and rushed over in his tr6. We let the cars check each other out.

 

Later, a friend of the wife's came round and clearly doesn't 'get it'. She had an incredulous look on her face that said "why the fuck have you bought that piece of shit" without having to say a word. This is fine of course and quite understandable.

That's the same colour as my last Vanden Plas - it does quite suit the car. I actually had an 1100 Deluxe once - orange with a black vinyl interior. I found it to be a surprisingly pleasant little thing to bimble about in - certainly much better than the X-reg 1.0L I had before it.

Same here FB. In the mid 80s when I started driving, my mate had a 1300 allegro and I thought it was pants. My mk 2 escort out scored it in every department. 27 years on and what I once thought was hellish is sitting proudly in the drive

Have a look through VA's Princess thread from the start - there's more info on cleaning brown BL interiors there than you can shake a stick at.

Or I could share in short. You want Stardrops, a cheapass nailbrush* and a bucket** of hot water to put some of the Stardrops in. Get scrubbing. If it's really stubborn, give it a dose of Cillit Bang*** but be sure to rinse off with plenty of water so it doesn't leave a residue. To finish, give it all a wipe over with some Autoglym vinyl & rubber care spray which should make it all shiny and fresh.

 

You may save some time by using Astonish brand tar and insect remover, it is £1 a bottle. I found great results removing two stroke oil and petrol from hard plastics with it today and discovered it will remove the smell of petrol from your hands with no effort. It's also reasonably good at removing tar, which is what I bought it for. I would expect this product would work quite well on the vinyls but having not tried it on vinyl myself - all my vinyl is now clean, you see - I can't guarantee it'll work.

 

 

*do not spend more than £1 on this. 99p is the optimum price.

Cif will leave shed loads of white residue. Stardrops is an amazing product for the price. A lot of pro detailers swear by it.

Google informed me that Home Bargains sells stardrops. If, like me, you haven't been to Home Bargains, they sell everything - cheap. I spent £2.50 on stuff I need and about another £20 on stuff I don't need

The stardrops worked well with the 39p HB nail brush. Cilit bang was acquired from the under-the-sink cupboard when She wasn't looking and the vinyl has come up well. I stole a shot of the glass cleaner too.

 

In other news-

Mot passed today with four advisories.

 

The most annoying fault is some sill corrosion.

Stardrops is a GR12 all-purpose cleaner. It's especially good at removing Waxoyl, grease, old oil, etc. from head hair

I think the styling of these looks really interesting nowadays and it would certainly turn my head if I saw it driving along.
