Went green laning on my old Parker Knoll recliner earlier today and saw this abandoned KLX250.

I'm planning on getting the forks serviced on my "new" 19yo T-cat as I have no history and they have clearly recently been leaking. The brakes were full of oil contamination despite a claimed recent rebuild by the PO.

Actually in the MOT history leaking forks have been a recurring issue despite apparently no pitting and the bushes feeling ok.

Any recommendation for who to go to for a good job within a reasonable budget?

^^ That & use OEM seals as most aftermarket ones are shit (not shite).

It's common for bikes that are laid up and/or left standing for months or more to suffer seal failure on forks because the stanchions dry out and when finally used, the friction causes the seals to leak. Also brakes start to bind. Bikes hate not being used. Laying them up properly is a bit of an art in itself.

Oh and here's a quick glance up the trail - because there's been so little rainfall here over the last few months, riding this route is far, far easier than it might otherwise be.

Thanks lads, I'd do it myself but I want the forks stripped right down and properly cleaned due to age and unknown bodgery. I could probably do it but am not sure what I'm looking at/for so would happily invest a few quid having it professionally done.

Depends if it needs them.

Get the front wheel off the floor & pull the bottom of the forks back & forth, any play/clonk between the lowers & the stanchions mean the bushes have worn.

I serviced my mum's Virago 250 at the weekend. She's only had a few months from her local bike shop and I found the pinch bolt for the front axle wasn't even finger tight! the battery was fitted backwards so the acid vent pipe wasn't attached, the inlet manifold is badly cracked (but not leaking yet) and it's got a camchain rattle. Oh & the front caliper was seized & the forks had what appeared to be smelly water in.

Is it wrong of me to expect better on a bike bought from a showroom? It's all fixed bar the camchain & manifold. I'll get the bits & gaskets to swap the manifold & reset the chain tensioners ready for next time.

Talking of this thing.

It seems to have a camchain rattle, do they tend to have sticky tensioners that just need resetting?

The inlet manifold is covered in big cracks, but it doesn't leak. Do they tend to fail completely or is it just cosmetic?

Is that NC cheap enough?

I bought my X privately [no cats], with full luggage and quite a few tasteful mods and >11000miles for £2,750.

I'd say worth a punt at £2k, but not more as there are loads out there.

If I'm not mistaken I had one of those many, many years ago ...albeit in its original model guise.  Very lightweight and just a whole lot of fun..

However, I must admit to doing a few changes.   Although the photographs of the actual bike I owned are buried away within boxes of 35mm film - here's couple of pages from my design portfolio. .

And the woman is saying what exactly?
"Oh Mike , your shrinking moped is such a turn on, please have sex with me"

Mind you  - I like the idea

You chauvinist - to assume the bike was not hers ! :D

In its road (rather than storage) configuration - this bike was exactly the same size and ergonomics as the original Honda, although of course - no longer a step through.

Still it was more comfortable for scooting around on than something like a Monkey bike, and as a small dual-seater was somewhat more useful (and more reliable !) than some folding m/c's such as the Corgi.   It was only ever intended for around town use &/or local excursions, when otherwise traveling by boat or motor-caravan.

The nature of most coastal resorts (aside from those in Norfolk) is that to go anywhere ashore - is uphill !  So, for some of us a small motor-cycle is very much more fun, quicker, and with a longer range than a small-wheeled folding bicycle.  The standard bike had offered such conveniences* as a handlebar basket for shopping ..and those still fitted on this derivative.

At the time I built this ..which was back in the mid 80's, the market leader in folding / portable motorcycles was the Diblasi, and that was horrid to ride, threatened to shear fingers as it was being folded down, and rusted before you got it out of its bag. The Honda Vision was a similar weight, good quality, so much more pleasant to use, and safer feeling, but it didn't pack away  ..so I simply made it Shrinx

btw. no pedals, so the Vision isn't classed as a moped.
