Anybody know of an old Honda Cub frame with V5 for a project?

Rusted to bits/non-running would be fine but probably not that easy to find these days, due to scene tax that might be applicable

Any thought's on TDM850s?

I've just been to see a "project", there is:

1 x full running TDM 850, off the road for a year or 2 but looks OK, potential issues as frame/engine number are not right for a TDM (4EP rather than 3VD?) and the DVLA have decided that someone has tried to change the engine size to 949cc so want an engineers report

1 x part stripped lightly front ended TDM 850, with plate and logbook, original non-tampered UK bike not on the hitlist

Assorted parts, wheels, bits of engine etc.

The man will take £300. The only complication is I haven't really got anywhere to put it all, and I'm meant to be fixing the house instead of rebuilding a shady bike onto another frame to dodge the doovla.

So what do we think, other than GIB?

I reckon I could have one on the road and see a small profit selling the rest of the bits?

What bike does a 4EP frame number refer to? If the numbers haven't been tampered with then go for it, if they have then I wouldn't touch it with some else's barge pole as you are obviously buying some poor sods pride and joy which some scum thought it was ok to steal.

Posted

Hmm a quick google suggests that 4EP is actually a TDM, possibly not UK market, the engineers report bit means nothing don't worry about it, they have asked for one every time it have tried to get the capacity on the van recorded correctly, all it needs is a letter headed note from kerbside motors saying they have inspected it and confirm the engine number and capacity.

If the numbers haven't been tampered with I would buy them at that money definitely.

Spurred on by the non purchase of the RS125, i decided to spend some money on what i already own and bought a new seat cover, chain and both sprockets, radiators and hose set and front pads for my '96 CR125.

All except the rads and hoses arrived today.

Mmm, shiny.

Yes I've done some more looking, it is definitely an import on the V5, possibly from Japan as the frame number is very short (4EP000xxx) which reminds me of my old JDM Subaru which had a similarly short VIN and the other model info elsewhere.

Googling "Yamaha 4EP" doesn't get much except some TDM parts.

The numbers don't look tampered and match the V5, I think I'm gonna have to do it, engineers report shouldn't be an issue as I'm an engineer working in an office full of engineers. I presume they'll take it from a chartered mechanical engineer? (not me obvs)

Yep go for it in that case, how bent is the crashed one? Is it fixable in a cheap fashion?

Anything on a letterhead is fine for the report on change of capacity

Posted

I only briefly checked the crashed one but he said it's just the forks, I don't think there are any included in the spares though.

To be honest the bent one will probably go straight on ebay for the next optimist, I don't have the space to keep them both although obviously the best money would be in fixing + selling.

Could be interested then, I've had quite bad forks rolled straight before, chuck me a picture when you're done, mind you'll probably be better off ebaying it!

Herewith my only running and road-legal vehicle, a 1985 Honda Vision.  I'd love to get a picture of me on it, but whenever I've asked someone to do that they've been laughing too hard to take the picture... apparently I look like a circus bear on a toy bicycle.

I bought it when I had a six-mile commute to work - too far to walk, not far enough to justify driving - for £100 off a colleague's grandmother.  It's done around 3,500 miles and spent most of its life in a dry shed.

I don't need it any more but I just can't bring myself to part with it as I know where it's been all its life and it's just too much fun.  I'm intending to do my grown-up bike licence at some point and get a real one but in the meantime tootling about at 30mph on a moped is just hilarious.  The running costs barely exist so I wouldn't be saving anything by selling it.

I'd quite like to start taking it to shows but the scooter scene round here is all old Mods on Vespas and Lambrettas. They've all known each other since they fought together on Brighton beach and I don't think a n00b on a Japanese bike would be welcomed with open arms.

Pictured with aforementioned colleague's Suzuki V-Strom.  He used to pass my house on the way to work so we'd go together in convoy and we didn't look silly at all, honest.

Love those Honda Visions- would have one in a heartbeat.

I've a few small scooters (smallest is a Suzuki of 110cc) but quiet fancy a 1980's 50cc twist'n go.

That looks excellent!

Bit of a setback with the NRG today... I was all set to take it for the MOT this morning, when I noticed that the WELL PHAT Tecnigas sports* zorst sounded worse than usual:

Yep, that is Gun Gum and bath sealant. This is a game changer - I'm not spending £100+ on a new exhaust for this heap, so if I can't find a cheap 2nd hand one it'll be broken for spares. A shame, cos it runs really well, but this was just a bit of fun resurrection; I've no intention of using it & can't be arsed spending money I won't get back.

I had a TDM 850 for ages. I really loved that bike as it was just right: quick enough, handled well enough, and was comfortable enough for me an old cripple. Brilliant bike and had a cracking home-made 2-1 exhaust made out of a stainless 3-1 from a Triumph. Sounded great. They do have a habit of wearing the jets in the carbs oval so they run rich all the time - easy way to tel is if it doesn't want choke on a cold start, mine never did, ran well though.

I have a collection of pictures of the smashed to hell piston after I dropped a screw down a carb intake, didn't notice until I started it and it went 'BANG!'. Sold the nike to a guy who had an accident on his TDM and wanted all the body/frame/wheels, everything but an engine so it worked out nicely. It was on eBay and the price was going ridiculous for a blown engined TDM so I sold it for a price I wasn't tooooooo ashamed to accept. Still got more for it than I paid when it was all complete and running!

I loved that bike.

Whilst looking through an old hard drive for pictures of the Rayton the other day I came across these photos of one of my old Mobylettes:

And here's my NF75 - daft little thing this was, only did about 37 flat out but had a shedload of torque and would sit resolutely at 37 no matter how steep the hill (up or down).

And here's my old CZ.  Loved this bike, temperamental though it was.

If it's just a pipe you need I've got one here, provided that AC and LC pipes are the same, which I'm 99% sure they are.

It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like the pipe is all there but the lump of wob is on the exhaust port? Has the pipe got a little stub bit first or is the damage on the barrel?

Cheers blud. I did assume that it was the pipe that had rotted away (the downpipe is pretty crusty), but I've been thinking about it since and now I'm wondering the same thing as you... I guess I won't know until I get all that crap off and have a look.

If it's not -20 or wazzing it down I shall have at it with my trusty chiseldriftpunch in the morning. Fingers crossed I'll just find no pipe or a broken stud or something else equally straightforward*.

*It won't be, though, will it?

Well, scabby Piaggio, it looks like you get to live!

Broken studs it is. The zorst itself is sound enough, if not exactly showroom condition. I've had the rotary wire brush on it and wazzed some VHT paint over the header bit and it'll do just fine. Look at the lovely big lump of wob that was used in lieu of fixing it properly.

You can see in this next pic how much was left of the studs: one broken off flush, and the other with a bit left sticking out...

Engine out time. This didn't take long because, as you might expect on a 17 year old moped, many were there missing screws. At least this way I can replace them all as I put it back together.

post-19532-0-61935300-1515333952_thumb.jpg

I'm one for one on the studs!

post-19532-0-35438500-1515334190_thumb.jpg

The other one will have to be drilled out though. I might take it up to my MOT chap for that, for the sake of £20.

Oh, and I did the brake fluid yesterday. This may be the worst I've ever seen, I'd be willing to bet it's the same age as the ped itself!

I spent a couple more hours on my kitchen decoration today, It's nearly ready to take the frame next door & ask them to do the welding it needs.

I took my VFR out today, first time on the bike for about 2 months.  I normally like how much more communicative a bike is over a car, but today it was mostly shouting "You've put on a load of weight and forgotten how to go round bends, you fat bastard"

I thought my 14 was doing that last time out. Turned out I'd forgotten how to speak bike & it was really saying 'you forgot to pump the tyres up you twat'.

My Mz,turning 30 this year(as will I) continues to display the virtues bestowed upon it by its state owned manufacturer. That is I put fuel and oil in it,and occasionally wipe an oily rag over it.Don't think I mentioned but I came off it again on some ice, total damage being a slightly bent footrest and partially worn clutch lever.kicked the footpeg back down and carried on to work. Only problem with all this is the increasing need for another bike to tinker with!

Got the new (old) GSX back together today for its mot, crap pic but it's all I have until the weather improves and I can park it on a scenic Lakeland pass.

Those TDMs went for £470 in the end, probably fair for what was there but more than I have at this stage of January.

Do like the idea of them so will put them on my want list, better get on and fix/sell this moped so I've got a few quid to play with.
