On my way to work this morning, see what I assume is a Swift parked outside the centre. 

I wonder if that's what I think it is....

Not seen one on the road and in use for ages. I'd do bad things for one, I spent a lot of time around old Subarus as a kid, and as such have a massive soft spot.

I was in Crete back in 1994 (ish) and the hire car place that I'd booked the cheapest (Panda) car from asked if I would take a badermatic as they were out of cheap&nasty manuals - gave me a CVT Justy and it was absolutely ace - we punted it all over the locality for a week without breaking anything. 
I don't think I've seen one over here in a decade?

From your opening shot I was hoping for a Swift saloon! Admittedly I've not seen enough to know their identifying features, I know they were 4WD or AWD?

That's stupendously rare. They made 70 odd, something like 49 coupes and 28 convertibles. 

Tara King had one in The Avengers for a few episodes before she switched to a Lotus Europa.

I was followed into town earlier by a dark blue SP250 Dart. Had a brief chat at traffic lights with the owners, it looked very smart.
