Autoshite - what does it mean to you?

For me its the love of rust riddled shite that remind me of being a little boy, working on cars with my dad, not really enjoying the scene ethics of cut the spring it will look sick yo and enjoying the witty banter and anecdotes.

Posted

What I love is the 'grumpy old man' distrust of the modern world, the silliness and the willingness to not only buy old shite to drive around it, but to actually look after it and spend money on it like it's worth something. When you're sitting in a darkened room trying to question the sense in spending £400 on a £300 car, this place is bloody brilliant.

1) I don't like status symbol culture and I don't like the hierarchy that forms on the road between cars. Driving shite completely throws the logic of either of those out the window to the point that the the people who partake in it get so confused that they actually end up raging about our cars.

2) My car stopped being traditional shite a few years ago thanks to OSF scene tax, but I still treat it like shite. On my budget I'd have the choice of a really really shit nearly new hatchback smelling of milk, a just as shit bland saloon that would bore me to tears, or my Anglia. The hatchback and saloon will depreciate to nothing within a few years and are costly to maintain, whereas the Anglia doesn't depreciate, free tax and cheap-ish to maintain and it's a hoot to drive. And I like tinkering and it 'lets' me do that quite a lot.

3) Ignore my sig - it's me trying to be funny, but people on other forums would take it seriously

It's love for the unloved. The only place in the world where owning a Laguna II diesel automatic is seen as a badge of honour.

I like to be different, to stand out from the crowd, the anticipation of not making it to work because of the car I drive, the scraping the ice off the inside of the screen on a cold morning, the slipping of feet on the patch of ice in the footwell, the weird looks and sometimes compliments from the "I used to have one of those" brigade. My MG is like a weirdo magnet and I wouldnt have it any other way! Oh and the look on the face of a boy racer when I whoop him away from the lights in his 2003 SRI Ashtray!!!!!!!!!!

Like someone has said - in jokes...theres not that many, but some quality ones - and kudos to LuxoBarg for taking the flak on the "hammering a smaller xxxx over it" in the first place.....

What the feck happened to Pog? Does anyone fancy an expedition into Biggleswade to rescue him?

Posted

Pog retired, and came back as Revolting Peasant, then lobbed his toys out and went.

Still appears on Moaty's Cat, and a facebook "friend". He's not dead or owt.

Ive always felt drawn towards the underdog in various situations. Cars are one of the more expensive manifestations of this,

I was dissapointed when pog went.

For the Love of the Unloved. For those of s who dont see a pile of rusty metal but a restoration challange awaiting someone brave enough, or insane enough, to have the faith, paitence time, and spare money, to restore, or preserve, as its maker intended/ Long live Autoshite :D

I can be sure that, should some unfortunate mysterious gremlin beset my Rover 825, Pete-M will be along with his support in barely a moment.

Ho yuss. You can count on me for that.

The thing I love about AS is that there's love for pretty much any old car out there, even the Rover 800*. There are also people on here with an insanely large amount of knowledge when it comes to old shite, Mr Barrett for his love of obscure old fibreglass chod, Mr Bickle with a metric fuckload of weird and wonderful stuff, Ed with his FSO collection. Bolleaux with some epic willpower when it comes to fixing shite old cars. This, to me is what makes AS brilliant. Also, Shitefestâ„¢ was absolutely fucking superb.

About the only thing that pisses me off about this place is the "other people like it and/or it's popular therefore it's shit and to be frowned on" mentality that creeps in. That and not enough fast old shite. Having said that, I think there are three XJR owners on 'ere... we just don't have much to write about 'em...

If it's an old or interesting car then I'm interested and want to read about it. I don't care if it's a triple turbo Spagthorpe Bologna Mk7 or a Renault 5. I really don't get the 'scene' stuff from some of the other sites and cannot be bothered with the constant circle-jerk mentality of a certain one "If you can't blow smoke up someone's arse, say nothing". If shit is shit, then at least here you can say "Hey, your car is shit, but I kinda like it for that". The ebay tat threads are fucking awesome as well.

Oh, and sometimes it makes me laugh.

*Not from me, I have standards y'know.

Underdog support, great advice, fantastic characters (some of whom I've met, too!) and the only place where my love of all eastern European "chod" is appreciated. It also makes me cry with laughter on a regular basis!!!

The epic tales of acquiring, restoring and running old and otherwise unwanted cars against all the odds, the photo threads, the banter, and the fact that it is the only place that I am embarassed to admit that I run an 8 year old Nissan Almera......

........ because it is too new and shiny

I'd been lurking for over a year before joining up, then when the Puma got too fucked to run dipped my toe in the water with the ZX, and now I'm hooked!

Autoshite (the website) is a place full of knowledge, wisdom and great stories. Sure, we get a few idiots, lots of spambots and are maybe a little mean to people (overpriced BMW guy, I apologize for my comments in 'the thread', you do actually know what you're on about car cleaning wise...) This place is like the perfect boozer. Sitting in a comfy chair, box of fags and a pint just yabbering with likeminded fellows (and fellowesses)

The great thing in my eyes is the joy of running an old motor! The ZX is comfortable, fast enough once wound up, cheap to repair and nice to learn how to do mechanicals on. No-one would want to steal it cos it's an old citroen and it owes me nothing! Infact I;m in profit from it (technically, not realistically!)

I'm hooked now! I can't go buying rusty old chod just yet due to lack of driveway/garage to work on, but I will work my way there! Start with reliable rustproof shite, then step up and buy a welder!

It also gives me a sense of riteousness running the shitter. Bloke at work, can be a grade a knobend 90% of the time owns a 55 plate derv golf. Costing him £450 a month on finance, he's tied in for another 2 years. He walks to work, I've seen his mum drive it more than him, yet he bangs on about how great it is, how it looks great and goes well. Until I pipe up with my story (and get backup from the other car nut in our office), about how I currently have free motoring. He starts to bang on about insurance, tax, fuel etc until I point out that those things don't make up a car's value, and that I pay alot less on all of them than he does.

Whenever I get parts delivered to the office (exhaust for the merv was a classic!) he launches into a million questions, most of them culminating in him saying he wouldn't do it himself, he'd take it to VW to keep the car's value. I've been out in it, and it's not that great, and I can carry more speed through the local corners in the ZX than he can! And if he crashes his car,he will have to keep paying finance, and get it fixed at the stealers knowing him!. If I crash my car, I will either:

Leave it

Kick it back into shape

Buy s/h parts and learn to fit them.

Throw the car away without a claim and move on.

I aspire to own a nice specced up XM, and I'm proud of that fact. Even the missus likes the idea, she likes the ZX, takes it out when she pops over a mates in the evening rather than the Meriva, which is shite in it's own way, hopefully we own it when it is futureshite!

Sorry, rambled a bit there!

He still owes £10k on a seven year old car?

I'm sure we had a thread like this on here not so long ago? anyways as i spend most my internet life on here i guess it can't be too bad, if it wasn't for AS i wouldn't have got the confidence to buy some of the old crod that i have and i wouldn't have met some really rather decent people.

Plus it makes me laugh.

Autoshite the commodity: I think first and foremost I just prefer the looks of older cars - possibly a naive view but I think if I'd been of an age to buy cars new in the 70s/80s I would be far more inclined to than I am now. Older cars seem so much more varied and interesting, and rarity definitely adds to it for me.

I also really hate waste and feel strongly about the environment, (and obviously I'm preaching to the choir here) but the truth is that driving Autoshite is far better for the environment than new cars, and so few of the "General Public" seem to understand that. No it is not fucking "green" to buy a new Prius you dicks!!! That "Green recyling scheme" responsible for the destruction of a mint Talbot recently is a case in point of this mentality. Obviously you save so much money too, and it amazes me what chod you can get for less than the price of a couple of months' depreciation on a new OMG VAG TDI, School run 4x4, etc.

Autoshite the community: A forum of like minded people talking about shite cars and being grumpy about the world in general. I love how non-judgemental the place is, that everyone is made to feel welcome - but without restricting free speech or criticism. I've never come across another internet forum with less bickering/twattishness than this one. The celebration of undesirable and low spec is brilliant - where else would a beige FSO Polonez or early base Sierra with dangly mirrors be venerated? I enjoy reading the spotted threads, projects (Volksangyl and Philibusmo's spring to mind in particular) The Ebay thread, Bargains and in jokes are comedy gold too.

Hi all,i am a long term lurker, and feel at home here,i have been slipping 'chod' and 'giffer spec' into my daily conversations for months now...

My old man only ever had a bike licence so my early life has been 'scarred' by Tamworths finest chariots waiting to pick me up at the school gates.(kids can be so cruel).

I like to read more than post, there's frequently genuine comedy gold on here, and the kinda shite i grew up with as a kid..

Due to lurking here i have been unable to resist the pleasures of two rather scabby unloved Subaru Brats, one of which is NHS beige with poo brown stripes (oh and red doors).

Mark (age 43 and a half).

^^This. I've never driven a Laguna diesel automatic but I bet it's fantastic.

I like old cars because

I can fix them with spanners and hammers and not need to get involved with omg diagnostixs @ £200/hour etc

They are green...... Er than a fucking pious. You want green, walk you sanctimonious twats.

They are interesting

They cost me less than the first few seconds of ownership in depreciation of a new Audi s4 - bloke I work with is astonished my daily driver is 20 next year, and I class that as new tbh

Buying a new car would be selling my soul.

I rather like autoshite because

It it full of like minded folk

Saves me hours of boredom by pointing out the handbag slinging sessions on the other forum

Is not snobby like the classic car forums.

I can swear and vent my spleen without ending up in a cunting sinbin

It is funny, It annoys me and It entertains me and probably all in one thread

What is autoshite?

Everything that doesn't have a scene, which is a paradox because to me autoshite is a scene, or is it.

I can only agree with the foregoing, really. I never seriously imagined I'd find a community of like-minded weirdos (none intended) who slaver over my old pics of things like my much-missed Polonez, and equally over my Cadillacs! And I've found a gang of helpful mates; and many of us even feel roughly as I do about old cars vs. moderns: that moderns are characterless blobs while old cars have ALL the style points and the green credentials too!

Keep it up chaps (non-gender-specific chaps, obviously). Long live the cheap unloved car.

PS: There's a kettle on in Barrow on Saturdays......
