Just got an e-mail for my advert, is it spam?

Even if it isnt spam, it really isn't worth replying to. Only an utter slack jawed imbecile would send an email like that and would be more trouble than it's worth.

Fatha_L would deduce that this kind of fellow is likely to be a complete 'chanty-rastler'.

I have had similar e-mails for stuff I'm selling, usually aksing for delivery to be included as well. I'd ignore it.

Not guilty!

I imagine it’s some cheeky git. My friend tried to sell his Rover 75 for £700 quid and got an email asking if he’d take £200. The second word was off :P

Plus it doesn’t seem like a spamish address...they’re usually something like [email protected].

Nice Monty by the way.

Would you take the £450? if not, just tell him no. It's probably not spam, they usually offer full asking price and then want to pay by western union banana money.

As much as a lot of people would rather barter when stood in front of someone and their car, If I can only afford 80% of the "ONO" asking price, instead of wasting everyones time I'll just pop an email over saying that providing it's anywhere like they have described, I can pay X amount and will come over with cash money and not piss them about expecting a new car or trying to haggle any further etc.

I suppose it's only a step above "WOTS BEST UD TEK M8?" but I've bought most of my cars this way and it seems to work for everyone involved. They're perfectly welcome to tell me to stick it up my arse without me having to drive all the way over beforehand!

It's not spam, it's just an asshole.

I get loads of these every time I advertise a car. I wouldn't even grace it with a reply, if it's someone serious they'll try again with a better offer.

I'm maybe way off beam here but I don't think that's too bad. A bit cheeky, yes, but if I was you I'd reply with your bottom line plus 50 and see if he bites. Nothing to lose. I'm always looking for a bargain and when I'm selling I'm up for a bit of haggling.

Posted

Aye. You don't start haggling at the amount you expect to pay. Well, good hagglers don't. I probably would and would then immediately say "Soddit. I'll give you full price JUST SELL ME THE CAR!"

Posted

Thanks for the advice! Will leave it tonight and decide if i am going to dignify it with a response tomorrow

It's not that cheeky really is it, surely people on here have sold <£1k cars and been offered the usual 2/3rds of the asking price? it's pretty much how it goes, not worth getting your knickers in a twist over.

Posted

I can't stand people who make stupid offers before they have seen the item, if they're asking me what the lowest price is or making a stupid offer then they're probably asking almost anyone with a car in their price range. There's also the almost certainty that they think if you'll knock £200 off before they've seen it, that you'll come down even more when they're stood in front of you.

I often wonder if these banana brains ever end up with a car and what a heap of shit it is if they do, and I suspect they're a bit like those 'expert' family relations that people bring with them to look at motors that actually haven't a fucking clue.

Not a car, but I was on the look out for some cheap rear pads for my V70. Advert on ebay for genuine pads £15 BIN or best offer. Offered £10. Expired. Offered £12.50. Expired. Not even a "sorry mate, looking for a bit more than that". So I browsed to eurocarparts, with a 25% off voucher I got some Pagid ones for £18 - which is less than the genuine ones with postage included.

Seems a strange way to do business - invite offers then just ignore them.

How much does it cost to reply to that person "looking for more than that" at least you've opened up a line of communication. If they don't like it they'll ignore your response, but at least you've attempted a negotiation.

This is not a scam, but a complete first class 100% A-grade pillock! Not entirely convinced of his motives either!

Funnily enough he got in touch with me too. I at least got a few questions tagged in my email but after bouncing emails back and forward aswering everything he wanted to know about the car he then decided that unless I dropped the price considerably AND put 6 months tax on the car then he wasnt interested. Dont get involved with this tit he hasnt got a clue and is a complete time waster. He also wanted me to deliver to Edinburgh for him! When I asked why (as we are quite close to him) he replied by saying that he wanted to insure the car when it got to his address and the deal had been done. I dont zip up the back so informed him that he could contact any insurance company with a date to start insurance from and pick the car up when it suited him but I would certainly NOT be delivering it! STAY WELL AWAY!!!! his name is Brian BTW for those of you who may also have had contact from him.

You’ve put in two different offers on a set of £15 brake pads, how much time do you want him to put into doing a fuggin deal with you? He’s probably got hundreds of sets of brake pads on and can’t be arsed with the hassle, I certainly wouldn’t get into bartering over £2.50 on a £15 set of brake pads. Genuine ones as well! You ought to have just coughed up the £15 I reckon.

I see your point, but why put best offer on there if you're not actually interested in accepting offers?

yep - personally I think 450 is quite generous for one of longbridges finest! why not meet him in the middle and see if he bites?

Ahem. Cowley, not Longbridge. ;)

This is not a sensible offer for this vehicle. I have seen it and it is very tidy and given that there are less and less of these on the road these days perhaps your statement neglects to reflect this. £450 is not generous! It is an insult to a car which has managed to escape the claws of scrappage and rust demons. Be realistic - You dont see many of them about so surely that counts for something. Having recently dealt with the man in question he is a time waster and wants something for nothing! Enough said!!!

If you can't handle criticism then why post?, The trouble is it that's a Montego, a mostly undesired car when new and still mostly undesired now unless it has a MG badge and even then they are still worth diddy squat.

£450 isn't unrealistic, especially if you want to sell it, hang on for more money if you wish but don't expect it to sell this side of the new year.

I'll give you an example, My old 1972 Opel Kadett was mint and one of the only ones left in the country, well in single figures, I struggled to sell it as it was so rare and undesirable ending up with £2300, Now if that was a Ford Escort of the same age, a car which is still massively more common, it would have been worth at least double that figure.

Any enquiry which is a one-liner along the lines of ‘will you take £XYZ for it’ is essentially spam. IGNORE.

This is a 100% cast-iron rule of shite dealing.

Trigger you may want to check posts before jumping in with both feet. This is not my car that I am backing! The thread relates to a guy that has contacted Aldo and he was wondering if it may be spam. I have also had dealings with the same person and he is a timewaster! It has nothing to do with criticism as your post suggests! Stop causing arguement for arguements sake! Its not your cup of tea I get that but no need to tar everyone with that opinion. Cheers for your input on my thread BTW so useful given, again, you haven't read previous posts!

'if you dont have anything decent to say - why post?'

relax, it's only a Montego advert!

Posted

Fuck me, I was about to offer £145.23.

I won't bother now!

There was another thread about a gold Montego which was for sale which the op has deleted now after it all got a bit silly.

Lowest offer I've ever made for a car was 20 pounds and a copy of GTA London for the PS1
