Benno and I went to Birmingham yesterday to collect my new toy. I'd been on the the hunt for a suitable FSO restoration project for a while now. It's definitely a restoration project!!

A few piccies........

WT actual F?? why has it been chopped in half? Mega respect for saving it.

Holy shit you're brave!

Is that even possible to put back together?

All the best with it though.

I think, judging by the way it was stored, it was purely for storage purposes as it was going to be used as a parts donor for their other pick up, which incidently Benno bought quite a while back. The yard was very small where it has lived for the past 9 years by the look of it. It is in a really rough condition but I restored a Marina pick up about 12 years ago for someone which was slightly worse, so I'm quite optimistic about this one. Plus it's mine! :D

For Christs sake! Thats a damn brave project Sir!

Wouldnt it be easier/ cheaper/ quicker justr to buy a Polish one & swop the bits over?

Thank you ;-)

Yes the cuts are quite clean so will be fairly easy to rejoin. I will of course be welding in extra support.

Maybe but not half as much fun :D

Maybe you could extend the rear bed to make a shite beavertail?

The thought did cross my mind but I'm buying a trailer in December anyway.

I've got quite enough work to do on it for now

That is utterly insane and if I wore a hat it would definitely be doffed to you for even considering restoring that  I didn't think it was possible but you've just out-shited Mr Bo11's FSO, his looks positively unremarkable in comparison!

Had a busy morning .......

This will be it's new home for the next few months.

Engine bay with a few Autumns worth of leaves and other debris.

While the other halfs away, I'll clean up the engine bay with the Dyson

Truck bed. I'll keep the ally sides, take measurements and scrap the rest of the bed. It'll be easier to make one from scratch.

Removed the interior and saw the extent of the floor rot, which to be honest wasn't quite as bad as I expected considering the state of the rest of it....

The inner and outer sills will need major work as they are the main load bearing structure of the load bed at the rear, so a fairly important feature.

MOT'd worse etc.

I would leave the trolley wheels on so that you can have the YO! DRIFTING MOFO! experience without the expense of new tyres.

I'm assuming no money changed hands (unless they paid you to take it away)

Jesus H Christ  The Mad Bob McMad Restorer of the Year award goes to........

When I saw the first pic I was half expecting the rear end to be poking out of the other side of the wall :lol::lol:

Wow!

Oh I'm so glad you all think I'm mad! I've never been so flattered

Had a bit more of a play this afternoon for a while and found another bit of crust. I think I've pretty much found it all now so I can work out how many artic loads of steel and welding wire I need.

Had a busy day of reuniting the front with the back of the truck today with the aid of a trolley jack, ratchet straps, blocks of wood and a pair of mole grips.

 At least it's both halves of the same vehicle

I will be adding extra strengthening plates tomorrow as well. Not just butt welding it and hoping it doesn't fall in half. Especially as I'm keeping it for a very long time.

I'm feeling a reasonably sized love for these Polonezs now, I'd love to bring an old one back from Poland.

Awesome work, and you are a brave, brave man.

I salute you for taking this on, and after loads of work/sweat/tears/screaming etc you will have a pick up that no-one in their right mind would want

Posted

that last pic looks like you have hammered a bigger shed over it............

sorry...........good work already!

You are obviously a man of skill, taste and bravery.

I'd have been tempted to insert a metal tube (scaffolding pole?) between the two sides of the chassis legs and used it to weld the two bits together for a bit of extra bracing. I'm sure it'll be fine but you don't want it snapping while carting a ton of horse manure through the centre of town.
