...'cos you want a 4x4 on a lovely new '12 plate?

There is that... in 15 years time people will see a shoddy Korando in a side street and think "Whoever was daft enough to pay £18k for that, Autoshite salutes you."

I always find it hard to believe that someone saw fit to shell out several quid for the contents of Benno's driveway

EFA, but the point stands ;-)

But it's this strange mentality that we have to thank for the existence of the FSO Polonez, Lada Riva, Skoda Estelle, Dacia Denem, and the like, that we all enjoy seeing around today. I always find it hard to believe that someone saw fit to shell out several grand for the contents of Benno's driveway when they were new!

Thing is though, these Ladas/Polskis etc were cheap cars in their day, often the very cheapest new cars you could buy. I guess the equivalent cars today would be things like the Nissan Pixo/Perodua whateverit'scalled/base Panda etc.

This YingTong contraption is the same price as a real car from a manufacturer you've heard of, with spares back-up and resale value.

And sorry, while I can see the appeal of a beige Lada 1200, I fail to see how this thing will ever be anything other than a rapidly depreciating heap of pain and disappointment by the time it gets beyond its first MOT.

At least the Lada could be fixed when bits fell off it.....

And, unlike today, used Allegros/Hillman Hunters/mk2 Escorts were probably pretty rotten by the mid-80s.

Has anyone actually taken the time to have a close look at the Korando? For the money they're actually bloody good value

If someone wants a new car in that class, £18.5k would have them driving away in a 2.0TDI Skoda Yeti in decent SE spec. In fact they start at under £15k. It was more than one magazine's car of the year just 18 months ago and it's properly screwed together (I've done 45,000 miles in a Yeti, some of them off road, and nothing's snapped, cracked, fallen off or worn out). I realise you're just trying to make a living like the rest of us so I genuinely wish you luck trying to shift Ssangyongs as a value-for-money proposition at £18,795.

Can we talk about old cars now?

Surely a five year old Ssangyong is still 17.6 times better than a one day old Freelander?

Let's face it, Ssangyong's own advertising campaign (pictured above) tells you all you need to know: That they're aiming at people who only think about a retail price and are using the lowest common denominator to ofload these things, probably rather like Skoda and Lada did in the day. Only the hard of thinking will buy one as residuals will be utterly horrific.

Do people really pay £25K for a Nissan Cashcow?.........

I imagined they'd be between £14~16K or thereabouts...I'm a wee bit out of touch, then again maybe not ;-)

Yeah, but that's a fully loaded one, not the regular £17-18K models which clog the roads. Only dealer principals and press fleet managers ever order ones like that.

Of course, but who still buys cars these days on the basis of what Which?/JD Power tells them too?

JD power is basically bullshit anyway, if the one idiot who buys one of these things manages to get a good one, then 100% of Ssangmong tosso owners would have given it a 5star rating, whereas something that sells several thousand is bound to have a handful of troublesome ones to sully the waters.

It's a pretty simple rule of thumb at the end of the day - if it's not got either a Japanese or Czech badge on it - it'll probably be less reliable.

Feck the car, where did that geezer get his suit? My eyes! My eyes!

OK, so the Ssangyong is a couple of grand less than its rivals, the advert is cheap and doesn't feature Katy Perry or a Mansfield youth with a tribal tattoo. All good things.

However, and this is something that has always confused the hell outta me, why would anyone with enough of a brain to scrape together £18k then go and blow the lot on a bloody Ssangyong? It's the zero intelligence option. Ok, £18k won't get you a Land Rover / Honda / BMW new, but it'll get you one thats a couple of years old and immaculate.

An immaculate, 2 year old, low mileage Freeloader 2 can be had for less than £18k... Why buy a Ssangyong?

Exactly. But never underestimate the stupidity of the public. A Kia C'eed is now the same money as a Golf and I know which one will be worth a cup of cold piss in 4 years. The grey rinsers are still dumb enough to buy a tin box made by the Dog eaters for 50p and a bowl of rice.

18 grand may not buy a new BMW - but it just might if you buy a showroom car. New 1 Series is 21 grand (not my 21 grand however) and you will get an ex demo for 18. And they're a serious bit of kit.

But for 18 grand, you will surely get a half decent spec 4x4 Juke? Built in Britain, proper dealer backup and it's worth a bit when you sell it in 4-5 years.
