HEAVY BONDAGE

Well, I've finally gone and bought a car. It's this rather lovely* Bond Equipe GT4S, registered in London in December, 1968.

Spotted on Ebay a few weeks ago, just up the road from Wiltshire-based 'Shiter and all round Good Egg Betaboy 2.0 who went to have a look at it for me and make sure it wasn't completely fugged. It was, but I already knew I was going to buy it at that point anyway, because I'm a very naughty boy who likes breaking rules, even quite mundane rules like the rules of buying an old car. A price was agreed with the seller (typically eccentric Old Car Man) and after some massive fuggin' hassle getting it delivered (as detailed in other threads) it finally landed at Barrett Acres on Friday morning. Yay!

Looks pretty HOT, I'm sure you'll agree. Garycox popped round and helped me manhandle it into the drive. Luckily the brakes work.

(plastic bag to cover gaping hole in the roof)

We 'popped the hood' and got it fired up with the help of a new battery. Not sure what the idle speed of a 1300cc Spitfire engine is supposed to be, but I'm pretty sure it's not 2000RPM. We turned it off again.

That was yesterday. Today I had a bit of a poke around some of the areas in need of urgent attention, like the driver's side footwell.

hmm, don't think that's the standard pedal position. I'm going to need a new one of those. And a new floor to screw it to. ho-hum.

Passenger's side has been replaced before and looks alright. This welding stuff was a way down the list until the fuggin' throttle came off in my hand, but now I suppose it's been bumped up to CRITICAL URGENCY which is annoying, cause I'm clearly in no way qualified to weld. I doubt I should even go within 200 yards of a Mig to be honest, something terrible is bound to happen. The 'other stuff' that I was hoping to get sorted first are the total lack of any working things on any part of the car. Mainly wipers, horn, lights, screen washers etc, all the pesky little things that the MOT man will insist it has (doesn't actually need floors though thanks to Standard-Triumph's outdated separate chassis. Take that, monoCOCK wankers!). Obviously I have somewhere less than one single clue wtf I'm doing, never having so much as put petrol in a car before now. Still, it's quite fun doing non-specific 'stuff' on it so far, mainly because that has involved poking big holes in stuff and unscrewing bits of trim (even I can use a screwdriver).

Cheers!

Superb, and if I wore a cap I would doff it young man.

What a fantastically epic piece of old chod, look forward to seeing the resto thread on this one! :D

Brilliant. But MOT man will still insist on floors, even with a seppo chassis. They're a stickler for this sort of thing. How mean.

Doesn't look too bad really. Non-working electrical stuff is just Lucas at its best surely.

Aren't GRP cars a bit electrically 'challenging' at the best of times?

Posted

They can be, but on the Bond, actual metal is never that far away. The Scimitar was an odd nightmare of really long earth leads everywhere. I don't remember my Bond being like that, and most things worked on it.

It's only about 45% placca, the floors (as seen above), chassis etc is all steel so there shouldn't be any of the earthing issues normally associate with GRP cars. I've certainly never heard of these cars suffering in the same way, for instance, a Scimitar does.

Oh yeah, here's what the passenger side door looks like. That bit fell out of it without me even trying. Need a pair of replacement doors but already have a line on a few possibilities. Seems like they come up for sale fairly regular like so I'm not too worried anyway.

Looks like a brilliant purchase, I like the styling and look forward to seeing how this thread develops.

Looks great Barrett! That be a bit of a challenge, but it'll certainly pay dividends when you get it on the road. Just marvel when people will look at you and the car driving off down the road like a man from recently arrived from the 1970s and wonder if someone had spiked thier tea or something.

You might even get the BBC contacting you to act as some sort of background character with your car for some 70s based drama or something, shouldnt be difficult, jst turn up, hang around for a bit, get paid for it and have a free lunch, then home again.

Er...I hope you dont mind me asking but did you get your finally get your licence? I seem to remeber you or someone mentioning you didnt have one.

Posted

License? Who needs one? This thing certainly won't be legal for a while so I'm not rushing that... hopefully the two events will coincide perfectly.

coalnotdole - feel free to pop down any time you're over Brighton way and have a look in the flesh! I would like to pick your brains RE: GRP repairs actually...

The car looks fantastic, I'm sure you'll manage to aquire both driving licence and Mot certificate within a decade or so with only minimal effort :D best of luck with both

Look forward to seeing this one come together, I had a 58 Bond Minicar a couple of years back

I *think* that as Triumph did not use outriggers then all the same rules apply, you just have the added problem of having to deal with a rusty chassis too.

I just want to tell you good luck, we are all counting on you.

What was it like? I've seriously considered one of these as a toy for several years and even seen one or two come up for sale within a sensible distance of me. I imagine they're slow, basic but a great big laugh.

Oh Gawd.

That is all

:)

Feel free to pop round and have a good chuckle / fix it all for me anytime you fancy. Kettle is always on

Very cool little car. Nice one and good luck with it.

hhhmmm. Def sent you a message -checked it in the outbox but the Ether seems to have claimed it.

OK -offered help in the form of a realistic appraisal, parts investigation & plan of action!

Some limited spannering offered dependant on my state of health at the time- and the pressing need to sort my old chod.

And a complete lack of understanding......

I salute you! Speaking as someone who has never been sober when successfully bidding on a vehicle on ebay, I share your elation/pain (delete as seen fit).

When was the photo of it in red taken?
