Far more than any banger racer can afford, I hope!

Possible stupid question:

If that were registered today, would it not fail the new, strict emissions tests ?

or am i being stupid again

That's astonishing. People spend thousands trying to make a car look like that and always tend to go a bit too far.

There's no comparison... (dealer reference, who remembers it?)

''I went to the DVLA and asked what number it would get and they didn't know. It completely flummoxed them."

In fairness, it's not hard to flummox the DVLA. Just ask them to get your name or address right on your licence.

I don't see you you could get a 2011 reg on it without a type approval number or a CO2 number.

Correct answer would be: you will get a 1981 reg? Or a Q plate, which would destroy any hope of the car being worth anything?

Really is an astonishing thing, perhaps better even than a barn find example.

No reason why you'd get a Q plate. It'll have a VIN number and its history is well documented. It'll just get an age-related plate, as if it was an import.

Shame it wasn't a Crusader or a Ghia - that would have been the ultimate

Yes, it would get an unissued 1981 plate. It all goes on year of manufacture, including emissions.

I think it's tested by the year of manufacture, not the year of registration

My T2 manufactured in '79 was not registered until '80 & subsequently/consequently requires a rear fog light.

This isn't really any help is it?

There's plenty of examples of cars built in one year, registered 1/2/3 or more years later getting a later plate - our very own "Late registration madness" thread has plenty. All those kind of show that if a dealer sells a car in year Y, it gets a year Y plate even if it was made in year X.

Perhaps the issue here is that the dealer sold an unregistered car.... can they do that? Do they normally register it for you out of ease and to allow you to drive the car away, or are they legally prevented from allowing Joe Public to buy an unregistered car. Because then it's not a dealer making the first sale in year X.... aaaargh my head hurts.

I reckon A5 should get it and use it as a daily

i' d love to play chase the megane with this car, but the seller seems to think it's worth the same as his house.

if i had a spare 10K (and that seems to be what he wants for it) i wouldnt buy it, i'd buy 20 cortinas and still have change.

it's overpriced and underpowered

One of my mates used ti have a 'brand-new' unregistered 1990 Rover Sterling. Though he sold it off about a year back.

I bet thedoctor is salivating over that. Perhaps he'll have a nibble at it and double his money.

I saw this in the Metro paper today :)

My own opinion is that is should be left unregistered and as a museum piece.

Ford own Gaydon... Perhaps it should in there? ;)

That Cortina. Lovely.

I'd just have to drop a daft Cosworth engine and box and a longer diff with an LSD. Cortina GLS Recaros and the Bilsteins off a 2.0S.

I suspect that'd anger one or two folk, but it'd be great fun to use as a daily.

It will go into a museum or air bubble in a warehouse and then be sold on in five years time, and so the cycle continues.

Actually using it (or even registering it) would be madness if you've dropped 18 large!

I guess the Y reg Crusader Ford Heritage own might be worth about the same to a true nutter, as it was the last off the line ...in Dagenham anyway.

The last, last Cortina/Taunus would have been made in Turkey in 1994, having made it there via Argentina and lots of minor changes.

Does it come with a 3 year or 60000 mile warranty !!!
