Autoshite Community - Honest opinion

one issue i do have is that i wish people commented more on the actual shite car related threads instead of just chipping in on unrelated boring threads which have nothing to do with the forum and instead bump all the decent threads down the page.

My 2p-worth - I like the ethos of this place far more than most of the other forums I've been on. My taste in cars is definitely more 'shite' than it is 'classic' or 'retro' and there's usually enough good stuff going on to find something worth reading. :D

I'm going to admit it. I don't generally read the Spotted threads... Wreck-finds, yes. Stuff people have been doing with their own autoshite, definitely. Random stuff seen out and about? Nah, doesn't really interest me. Can't really explain why!

I expect as a motoring journo of sorts you see the motors we dont day in day out. I like the spotted stuff myself as it adds the when did you last see one of the diamention to the day.

I quite like the spotted threads. I don't comment on a lot of them as not many of the pics need a comment, but when I'm driving about I often wish I had a camera on me to pap some of the random chod that is out there.

Makes me grin that my 604 was in a spotted thread when Spotted Laurel clocked it years ago, never thought I'd end up with the thing.

If only my day was spent checking out glorious motor cars. Like quite a lot of you, most of my day is spent sat in front of a computer. This year is over three months old and I've spent about 2hrs of 2012 with cars that aren't mine. S'pose I do get to see a fair bit of chod about, but that's what you get for living in Wales, where skintness forces people to drive around in cheap old motors. I fit right in! Or perhaps it's just a complete lack of desire to keep up with the Joneses. People here tend to buy a car and keep it until it doesn't work anymore.

That must be very difficult in Wales with the amount of Welsh people called Jones :D

As a relative newcomer I can't really comment on how things are now compared with in the past, but I feel at home here and I hope I've embraced the shite spirit. I can't resist logging on every day to chuckle at the latest ebay mong and/or drool over someone's incredible new shite find - this is probably the only place I can talk about stuff like this without being ridiculed and in like-minded company. I like the informality and light-heartedness of the place and the fact that no one seems to take themselves too seriously. We've had arguments and silly posts but every forum gets that, same with members dropping out and new ones arriving - it's all part of the natural lifecycle of an online community and I think AS generally ticks along very well for such an unmoderated forum.

Yep I like the "spotted" stuff too. It brightens up an otherwise tedious world to know the stuff people on here see is actually still about. I very rarely see any shite-worthy vehicle of any kind. Keep 'em coming!!

I do read the "spotted" threads, but don't normally comment since there's little you can generally say other than "good spot"

Posted

I agree NC. I do post the odd 'top spotting' comment though, as altough I worry about sounding patronising I'd rather risk that than nobody bother posting pictures up anymore.

I like to think the spotted threads are good places to have an actual conversation, maybe started from a reminiscence or a query. Sometimes it even works.

What I don't read is the GOM thread - haven't for the best part of 6 months. And I feel better for it!

I post pics up in my spotted thread, but tend to find that due to lack of comments, it quickly drops off that board.

To be honest I find the lack of comments on spotted threads quite disheartening, it kind of feels like you've wasted your time especially when you see "F-reg Proton/spambot" threads keep being bumped up to the top whilst your spotted thread disappears you do wonder to yourself why you bothered putting them up, they may get read but whether they are appreciated is not clear.

I try and make the effort to comment on peoples spots as I know it can be hard to find and snap spots and I want the spotter to know that I appreciate thier efforts, it also keep the thread fresh and near the top. Even a mere 'thanks for putting these up' type comment would be nice to see.

I can see where you're coming from, but if several others have already done the "great spot" post, doesn't seem like much point adding another one

Posted

Well said LS! although 10 -15 people just saying 'GR12 thread M8' can be a bit boring.

If more people commented on spotted threads we would still have the likes of Barrett, Spottedlaurel, Brammy and Rootes Arrow still posting their spots on here, Mind you everyone now uses flickr as well as facebook to upload their photos and you tend to get more feedback of those sites without all the hassle of trying to make a thread everytime.

There are other, *ahem* specialist interest :oops: , fora that people put a lot of work into scanning things or putting things up that have the facility for other users to individually thanks the poster of that material, I believe it works well.

Must admit, I never thought I'd encounter anyone who shared my love of the Polonez and other 'weird' cars. Let alone a forum full so that's good. Lets see how Shitefest goes! Excited.

I am another one of those who find the lack of response to spots a little disheartening, it's not like it's a two second job to upload them all so it would be nice if more than the usual few passed comment, after all this is a "discussion forum" and if all people want to do is look at pictures and not join in then google images will do them just fine.

Another thing somewhat off putting is when you make a comment or add some information and the thread stops there and then like "oh no it's him again, ignore him!" I moderate on two other forums and find it a bit alien as on those it's like a big friendly family with a common interest rather than if your face fits.

Where are the meets?

There are so many of us on here surely this warrants a get together, not 200 miles away but something within an hour's drive well within the capabilities of the most "shite" vehicle and if it's a case of organising it then lets get on with it.

Surely the whole idea of this forum is to encourage interest in the less favoured and more obscure marques what better way to promote them than to get out and drive and show them off or have I got it all wrong?

?

I think we're all quite spread out across the UK and - in some cases - the world. So finding somewhere that fits that criteria for everyone could be tricky. Birmingham?...

Posted

I am about an hour from Derby which is less than an hour from Birmingham, Manchester to Derby is not much more it's an ideal location to attract people from a large catchment area, do the same just South of the M25, near Bristol and maybe Newcastle and suddenly there is something for the majority, excluding those of us lucky enough to live in sunnier climes....it''s easy to do but only if people really want it to happen.

I go to some RR meets, the local Classic Car Club, another local retro club meet, a Japanese meet, at least 6 major events some up to 200 miles from home and many other local and regional events but apart from the NEC I have never met face to face more than a handful of Autoshiters, maybe we should have a "PM me if you fancy meeting here" thread?

Posted

I would love to but I have already decided not to do Japfest at Castle Combe in May because of the fuel costs we are going to Rising Sun in Lincoln instead!

What about a Shitefest North/Midlands ?

I'm another who's been on here since near the beginning and I love the spotted threads as I really get excited when I spot something in real life. Back in 2006 though I was a student and had more time to catch up on here - I haven't uploaded a spot for ages and it takes a while to find my old spotted thread.

I'll admit that at the start i used to laff my ass off on here too.

One thing I really like about on here is the cars I grew to love that I previously wasn't as keen on. It was an Autoshite coming of age! I never thought I'd get excited about a Mk3 Astra ever....

Didn't realise AROnline was dead in some way - I thought it was a great site!

I don't get the time to be as active on here as before but I always swing by!! But for pretty much all of 2009-2010 I was absent from here and upon me return I noticed a lot of the familiar names had left.

SpottedLaurel left? I thought he was the guy that ran the site? I might have this wrong though..

Anyway, I'm staying. :D

Maybe someone could start a regional thread for whatever area they're in and try and organise a local meeting once or twice or year?

Barrett, Spottedlaurel, Brammy and Rootes Arrow.

Names of posters I looked out for Barretts kit car stuff was interesting. Spotted Laurels Japanese stuff and spots were great and Brammy + Rootes found some great stuff on their travels. Sad that they have gone but hope they will relent and come back in due course. Hirst and Bollox used to be good too but dont seem to be here as much. :(

Have to say, Bram77's flickr pages are ace, as are Triggers and a few others who I dont think are on here like GoldScotland.

Or we can meet at national events, like the NEC classic car show, Chomnomnomly and stuff like that.

Having said that if anyone fancies a meet up at McDonalds Leyland tomorrow evening.....

I think it would be a good idea to create 3 sub forums.

Spotted threads

Collection tales and reviews

For sale

The reason for doing this would be to keep those threads which require a lot of effort easily accessible. Having written several in the past I appreciate the effort that goes into creating them. Spotted threads are also a labour of love and although I rarely comment on spotted threads I really enjoy looking at them and I'm sure I am not alone.

I also think it would be a shame to ditch the banter because of worrying about pushing threads off the front page...this is the route to becoming the sort of police state you find on other forums. This is why I think that creating three sub 'rooms' would be a good idea especially as the search function gets less and less effective as the site grows.
