Shite in Miniature II

Recommended Posts

Okay, two of those arrived in a job lot with these, which was the real reason for purchase. The new red 2600 is nicer than my old one and the police car... well, not sure yet. I thought I might use it as a wheel donor for the other 2600, which I'd then sell... fuck knows, this lot cost quite a lot of money and I'm not sure why I did it tbh.

Anyway, the prizes:

The Mebetoys Mistral is a bit borderline in terms of condition, but it's just about okay. Nobody apart from me is ever going to see it anyway. The Politoys 3500GT is what I really wanted, anyway, and although it has a few paint chips the paint colour hides them pretty well for the most part. Interesting* to see the Maser has moulded plastic wires which are quite different from the (slightly) later Alfas.

The pop-up headlights pop up when the front suspension is pressed down on. I think I bought it as a job lot with a Corgi Black Mercedes 190e-16. I thought the Toyota was an unusual model.

Here is a few more from my collection. I have more but they are carefully packed away and I am working at the moment.

I've posted a little parcel today to @Amishtat, and in a reciprocal agreement, a little parcel has arrived from him today while I was out.

611494131_DC005.thumb.jpg.65ded95da2b249b8bc1edee62c31f32c.jpg

These were as arranged, and have gone up on my wall in their packaging.  However, because my birthday is fast approaching, and he remembered, there was also this:

A Corgi Range Rover Vigilant!  I have one already but it's one of those things, isn't it?  A specialist collector of police vehicles can never have too many, and I am that specialist!  Many thanks, @Amishtat

A few months back, I bagged these Corgi Minis as a job lot, for about £4 each, which I thought to be very favourable. I'm happy to embrace shite miserdom, especially when it provides a glimpse into how one company focused on remodelling a model in only a few short years!

First up is the Mini van, itself not the earliest but not to worry. Here it is seeing how those rockers are getting on down in that there Brighton. Just out of shot is some odd fellow with a box brownie, looking at an obscure vintage car. Note also that this one has the incredibly delicate rear doors, still. Nice.

That said, this setting is probably wrong for this period of wheel style, so if it is, please rush those correspondences to:

Here's a photo of some hip young things (who will all be drawing pensions now, if they're still alive) posing in front of a novelty-laden Cooper S. Opening bonnet, doors, boot lid, flipping seats and stripy sliding sunroof! Must've been a revelation to the youthful recipients when these were new.

51102616735_bcdb9284a7_b.jpg

And the crushing reality that 1960's London wasn't all summery days, miniskirts and blokes decked out in old military dress uniforms. I'll admit that the host of features came at the expense of the casting here, which is a bit contrived in places, like the lower rear quarters and the rather squared off front end. Has anyone truly made an accurate Mini casting?! That said, this is a lovely little thing, if a bit damaged in places.

Strewth mate, they even got the little buggers down in Stralya. I can't see these Melbourne trams without thinking of the excellent mid-80's film, Malcolm. A must see, if you haven't already. Anyway, nice cheery colours and early disc wheels on this one.

51101622447_3950cbefab_b.jpg

And finally, debatably the runt of the litter in this context, since it isn't filled with opening stuff, doesn't have fragile bits intact that often go missing and isn't one with cheery colours and early wheels. But it's still a fun little thing, with nice bouncy suspension and arguably the most accurate casting that Corgi did - although the van is pretty nifty in that respect. Seen here in its twilight years, trundling round suburbia. I can smell the ageing creosote of that crumbling fence from here.

I had the green Mini Magnifique from new.  I remember it was also issued in blue, but I never had that one.  Mine died by my own hands many years ago, but I managed to pick up another green one (probably for bugger-all, me being me) and last year I set about restoring it, drilling it out, stripping the old paint, priming and finally coating it with Ford Purple Velvet, which I thought was a highly suitable colour.

I had all of those Corgi Minis from new, I probably have them, but all have been modified (ie ruined) by me in some way! The van has lost the back doors, but I still have the dog!

The green Magnifique I cut out the glass from the sunroof so it opens properly (!) and I think I took it apart for some reason and is in bits now.

Anyway that's a nice collection right there...

Edit; Love the film Malcolm and the Antipodean conection makes me think of one of my fave films Goodbye Pork pie...

i too have several Corgi mini's, though the list above missed out the rally car, which came in 3 distinct liveries, from memory there is the 1964 and 1967 monte carlo rallys cars and the third been the sun rally, which it seems is now very valuable! i cannot find a picture of mine, which is the 64 monte car.

there is also the "racing" mini, available in blue and pale yellow, mine been a very chipped blue one

1762501310_2019-04-2012_51_13.thumb.jpg.3b284f7595300fc6087e951684010a02.jpg

and there is the "wicker" sided Radford Cooper, based on the one commissioned by Peter Sellers. He had a series of cars built for himself and his then wife, Britt Ekland, but the wicker sided car was i think the first one.

DSCN8625.thumb.JPG.479955edaa99fbe0bbc52390f3797bd4.JPG

and there is the mini-magnifique in blue, i have been trying to keep an eye out for the green one, i have yet to find one cheap enough to match my skinflits budget!

i too have the red and blue boggo corgi minis, though i am missing the orange austin 7 version, the maroon one been a morris mini-minor.

DSCN5144.thumb.JPG.cf50eb7f8e6908029e808382ecb7fd89.JPG

the blue one is i think a morris too.

DSCN9410.thumb.JPG.abd25237a28a97e88d7220feeee4983b.JPG

i got the police mini van too, though i have the copper and his dogs with mine still.

DSCN8241.thumb.JPG.bf135cab283cf50531eff83ef73b1f3f.JPG

and that is before we start to think about the Dinky versions, the police mini cooper, seen here with the mini-magnifique

DSCN5130.thumb.JPG.abf784fb194175216753a995f681db1e.JPG

the mini traveller (or was it the austin mini countyman, i cannot remember) which came in more than one colour besides white, i'm sure.

DSCN9228.thumb.JPG.67a1a24b3b97e6795aca625db037ea12.JPG

and the mini "automatics" which was i suppose Dinkies way of differentiating their cars from Corgi's. in the blue and red with mat (vinyl?) roof

and then later  Dinky also produced the Clubman in police and civilian colours.

I was fortunate enough to acquire the blue version recently

20210317_164220

Which compares nicely with the Dinky

20200806_143152

That one owes its left door to the police version

20200806_122420

The Traveller is a different era really, with the pressed metal base

20201129_11555620201129_115735

All of them seem to be quite in demand, but can be found cheaply if you look for long enough

Want! I love the Corgi Minis with the opening features as they're the only ones I haven't owned.

I still have the Blue Mini-Minor that was my Dads and the Traveller which I bought at a Swapmeet in the 80s. The others have come and gone mean time.

All this Mini talk caused another garden meet.....

And not only that, I'd not realised until now how different the 'same' Corgi models were - nothing is shared, not even the glazing!  Madness.

Oh and there was this too

Was naughty and bought one.  But it was only £1.40!   Was an odd figure to find on a buy-it-now, so grabbed it.

It's die-cast but no country of origin stated, very likely China like the current Welly range.

The proportions are pretty good, but something odd going on at the front

20210130_152500855_iOS.thumb.jpg.f1bc609d2e6baa7aee45cd2ecc0c071f.jpg

The rear light clusters are going to get someone's eye out

So how does it compare to the current model Mini Cooper 1300 by Welly?

Well, Welly, for starters you made things bigger back then

20210130_152703144_iOS.thumb.jpg.e912d53d9a62fed2eb33b34a458e6496.jpg

They measure to 1:28 and 1:26

Both have pull-back motors.  So who won the standing start race across the kitchen lino?  It was the red one, absolutely flying into the skirting board.  The silver one barely made it.

Wife showed her disinterest.

Welly's Mini evolution was featured* too

Sometimes this hobby is as frustrating as it is interesting. Having bought a K-6/11 with a good canopy, I thought I must have at least one duplicate to sling on eBay. Nope. One has no winged Honda sticker on the pillar, one has no bonnet sticker. Maybe they got peeled off, not really worth worrying about

20210411_140219.thumb.jpg.d96e932430aef1ec461754c86bcf2f6d.jpg

Then I look closer

20210411_140139.thumb.jpg.27d55d9847dad86e1baaafc57a446d0b.jpg

WTF Matchbox, why did you delete the steering wheel and mould it into the dash? The other non-engine one has a black base, so that's different too

20210411_140309.thumb.jpg.4243219a9a4aa3a0192c0781aff3e65d.jpg

Then I notice the side stickers differ too - two go over the vents in the rear wings, two don't

Now it's Corgi's turn to frustrate me - not only have I not got a duplicate colour to paint purple, I've just noticed the base/grille arrangement changes at some point

20210411_142946.jpg

The ones with the grille as part of the base are marked Corgi Juniors, the others are just Corgi or no name

20210411_143227.jpg

I was going to say that the purple one has a plastic grille & yellow seats. The beige one with metal grille is one I haven't got(I think). Then there's the wheel variations.....
