Big Merc assessment just in!

Brand is Apple both on the base and the box, and as suspected was made in China, complete with some Pinyin on the box to prove (below the word 'Friction' top left corner)

image.png.58bbbbd0e5ecc84c27811401889dbde4.png

Had to have it, if only because: 1) have never seen another; 2) it is perfect size for slotcarshite; 3) there are no Merc W116 S-Class slot cars you could buy, even if you wanted to 'do a Ronin'

Friction motor is working and the high-riding chassis unclips.

Word got out.  The Lucky Toys Merc W114 turned up to welcome it to the household

Firing-up the spreadsheet produced a scaled length of 1:32 together with a porkier width of 1:30.   So not only is it gawky, it's bloated as well - just like the new owner.

So, it is boxed and was nabbed for a fiver.

Several, and the Corgi ones

OK I lied - I have one Majorette and several Corgis - in the spirit of the forum I went for red white and beige.

20200627_091916.thumb.jpg.85977ca2d6ea192217789918509365bb.jpg20200627_091807.thumb.jpg.15458a92d7f31a7d42127ce5906458bc.jpg20200627_091822.thumb.jpg.03aebb0127ff8779757da8eab26ac371.jpg20200627_091834.thumb.jpg.eae01095b328c5715ae864e5e66aa299.jpg

All have opening features, the Corgi and Majorette go for the tailgate as they are the (better looking) estate.

Interior detail is perhaps best on the Majorette as the Yatming has no dashboard behind the correct looking steering wheel.

Corgis usual lack of effort in this era is all one lump

Today's arrival was surprisingly hard to track down at an acceptable price - Dinky MK2 Transit.

The MK1 is sought after but pretty easy to find in both sliding door/twin rear door and the single rear door version (which I prefer), but the MK2 is far less common. Less made maybe?

Mine arrived with no tyres and a replacement rear door that didn't stay in place

20200627_114326.thumb.jpg.4a4a489c7458f1b65294c8cb953323d3.jpg

I knew I had the original wheels from this MK2, that I somewhat crudely modified as a teenager (and I plan to re-do better).

I also fitted the tailgate by using a centre punch to tighten the crimps inside the body.

While I was rummaging in the spares box, I found a couple of modern tyres that fit the dragster rather well

Had a trip to Tesco this morning.

No Mk1 Golf or Dodge police car,bit did manage to get these.

Happy to find the Honda cvcc, and the Porsche rally car.

Hopefully the Golf will turn up.

One gripe with the Honda is the huge rivet post from the the roof to secure the base on,it looks terrible,on an otherwise great model.

Looks like I have accidentally oversprayed on the inside of a window (didn't mask up the sunroof aperture).

Am I screwed or is there anything I can do do get it off?

It's a model kit I am, or was 'restoring' and I couldnt detach the glass without damaging the bodyshell.

Picked up this Matchbox Daf car transporter today,

Slightly unusual,in the fact that the base of the tractor unit is unpainted.

20200627_154946.thumb.jpg.bfbf0ec071ac9a4ac2fef43f2be53bc6.jpg

Any I've seen previously have been painted red,a quick Google suggests that this is a 1970 version, after they went to the superfast wheels.

After 1971 until it's demise in 1975 the were painted red.

You learn something new every day.

Rummaging through some of life's general detritus earlier in search of some paintbrushes, I came across this. Another one of those toys I can't remember not having but one I'd completely forgotten about until DC expressed an interest in one on Wednesday. Even then I didn't expect to come across it but here we are. Doesn't look like I played with it much (ungrateful little fucker) but it has reminded me I had a roadsweeper of some sort too.

38 years ago I was a binman, and these were the standard wagon.  Naturally I have one I painted to match those I rode in...  I also have the Dinky sweeper on the Ford D chassis, in fact two; I may yet repaint the scruffier one.  Council fleet, anyone?  Damn, that means I'm going to need another Oxford HA....

I, too have been rummaging through life's detritus, and found this.

Picked it up in a supermarket of some kind, somewhere in Germany during the Great European Road Trip we made in my wife's 306 back in 2009. By remarkable coincidence, we ate a truckload of Bahlsen biscuits on that trip.

It's still sealed in its blister pack, and close inspection reveals remarkable fidelity with the Merc Actros original; certainly for something I bought for the equivalent of 25p.

Ditto. Mine is the later one with red base to the tractor unit, more of a metallic maroon than straight red.

While I was out there today I 'restored' this Tamiya 1:20 Wolf F1 kit, first built back in about 1985/86. When I say restored, more of an exercise in hastily glueing together the various constituent parts Master SL found when rummaging through my various parts boxes.

I painted this for him today, he can finish it off now. He made a good attempt on a fiddly Fujimi Ferrari (!) recently, so this one should end up quite decent.

I would use something like T-cut, especially the less abrasive metallic sort. I've stopped using chemicals to get paint off of window units now after two brake fluid/caustic soda disasters, I just sand and polish now.

Thanks. Managed to save the front and rear screens together with the 3rd side windows with T cut and glass polish but had to cut out and discard the others.

The paint went on all shit too but managed to polish it up. It's a ten footer without your glasses on.

Less than happy.

You're lucky to have a shop around that stocks that kind of stuff. That Prelude is a great-looking kit - it's one of the few I'd build completely standard.

I have a little fleet of Transit Accident Units now, none of them with a rear tailgate, none of them a mk2.

In other news... I thought a shot of my entire Austin Healey fleet might be in order.

L-R: Corgi 100/6; Spot-On 3000; Corgi Classics 3000 with hardtop; Century Of Cars (Corgi) 3000 without.

Sunbeam-Talbot Alpine, at long last; it's one of the first I opened up for restoration but inexplicably seems to have taken forever to finish.  And Corgi Golden Jacks Mini-Marcos, one of the more recent projects.

Oh and a little RNLI grouping: Vanguards A35 van; Landy and boat from a kind soul here; Bedford CA.  All original factory liveries.  And on the shelf below, a couple of cute little Fiat vans.  I'm sure I have at least one more somewhere.  Think they might be Solido.

Got these years ago in a Shell promotion probably about 1995, the 8 are from one set, the other one was a random given because I had all the others. Never been unboxed but have travelled halfway across the world

I remember having the red fire service one as a kid, one of the toys that vanished inexplicably and is still sorely missed.

I don't like the sliding door versions with the twin rear doors, both the model and the real thing. Spoils the nice shape of the MK1 especially

I finished rebuilding the Tamiya Audi 90. I got this in about 1991 when I was 12 and as it wasn't the best job to start with, making it better was a challenge. It had been brush painted and then touched in over the years with a black Sharpie.

After I got this one I became a lot better at model making as a teenager however quite recently I seemed to have lost my steady hand that I used to have, perhaps I'm getting older.

Anyway, Rover Wedgewood blue again as I have a lot of that left over.

I arsed up the windows by forgetting to mask off the sunroof aperture however the interior looks ok so having these removed lets you see it a bit better.

Looks ok on the shelf, I'm happy enough with it.

Good to see it resurrected. Colour reminds me of one they offered.

Looking at the shaky hand thing my dad suffers with I fear I will go the same way, that's partly why I'm trying to get as many done now as I can. Some new spec's would help too, but lockdown meant we had to cancel an eyesight test.

By coincidence, yesterday I was contemplating similar work on some of my older kits:

It was also good to be reminded of what I need to do on these to finish them off. Got to look at making a new front screen for the Cadillac, might try the method of gently heating a bit of clear sheet then letting it cool on the cracked original as a template. Nothing to lose, it could still end up as a banger if that doesn't work out.
