I see there is now an Alpine 110 in 'cup spec'. Will be halfheartedly looking out for it.

Dug out my 3 MB Golfs. only the silver one has the different rear plate so I would agree the plate was changed when the holes in the roof were removed. Googling the Romping Rabbit shows it has the 6 digit plate front and rear - at home in the US as well as almost anywhere I guess

I missed out on Tat Friday™ due to a very long day at work - just wondering what the TAA van is?

It's theMatchbox  K-29 Ford A-series chassis with a Luton box on the back - the red Avis version seems to be a bit more common than the blue TAA, though it came in quite a few different liveries.

Matchbox_Superkings_Ford_A-Series_Luton_Van_Avis.thumb.jpg.3d9b234d8e28229ae4222080c1ebdc00.jpg

The same casting was also craftily used as a tractor unit to tow the K-27 powerboat, simply by the process of riveting on a towing hitch rather than the van body:

And, of course, you'll be familiar with the scaled-down MB61 Superfast Wreck Truck:

Matchbox_Superfast_Ford_A-Series_wrecker.jpg.c407c53e5e8d0f2841c65cdb12578529.jpg

For quite a long time, I thought these models were meant to be Ford Transits; it was only when I stumbled across a rotten Ford A Series in a scrappie sometime in the mid-90s and saw how big it was, did I realise they were a separate model range altogether.

1978_Ford_A-Series_Truck_Press-_Pic.jpg.418e636b66a99cbb82a0401319c2783b.jpg

It was news to me that the A Series was sold between 1973 and 1983, to bridge the gap in Ford's commercial range between the 3.5 tonne Transit and the 7 tonne D Series - and I don't remember ever seeing any on the road - though I've since found local pics of the early 80s with A-series vans in the background, so they definitely were about.

That said, there's a lot of commonality with the Mk1 Transit, so maybe I shouldn't beat myself up about it too much.

I had the red Avis box van as a kid, but unfortunately the plastic back got broken and it was binned for being sharp and dangerous.

Thankfully @egg sorted me out with a replacement a year or two ago!

I also turned up a really clean Superfast wreck truck in a charity shop, so I'm golden at the minute.

Could inquire next week, if it interests you?

Aha - that would seem to make sense.

I suppose Matchbox changed the front licence plate to a more generic US-type whenever they were making the new 'monster truck' baseplate for the US-only Rompin' Rabbit - and then modified the plate on the body casting to match, since they were removing the roof rack mounting holes anyway.

Matchbox_Superfast_VW_Golf_Romping_Rabbit_worn.jpg.50bbe330842de96f3e5e2bb1e06fb55c.jpg

(Confusingly though, pre-production Rompin' Rabbits carried the JBV plates front and rear - which challenged my Google-fu skills somewhat.)

The standard Golf continued to be sold outside the North American market, so understandably they just paired the new body casting with the previous baseplate - probably reasoning that no-one would notice.

Well, I've had that silver Golf since 1992 (bought as NOS from a small and unfriendly newsagent in Newtownards, annoyingly without its box) and I hadn't noticed until recently, so I guess they were right!

No,thank you though. Just wondered.

The D series is pretty uncommon, does look like an overgrown MK2 Transit - seen a few on my travels

Resto projects slow up at this time of year without a dedicated space to do it. Did strip and polish this little feller today though...

I decided to buy both the Crown and Gloria because I knew they had to be together. The CX is only 9 quid so can't refuse it either. ?

I ordered a couple of cars off Amazon, 1st up the Hot Wheels ID DeLorean/Time machine. Love the real thing, love the films, love the HW version. I'm trying to get them all

I also rather like Beetles, and it seems all the bigger manufacturers seem to have had a go at a twin engined version;

HW Evil Weevil

I can't find one of these, 70's original or the new version for sensible money.

I've got a couple of Corgi V.W. Hot Rods

Today I got the Johnny Lightening Bug Bomb, original 70's versions of this seem to be unobtainium at least in the UK. Shame the numpties at Amazon packed in a Jiffy bag so the blister is squashed

I was in the strange position today of being out and about in the car on my own and having plenty of time to kill. Other than getting a surprisingly good haul of 1:1 spot photos, I made use of it by going to a boot sale, then a toy fair, which netted me this lot:

IMG_0868.thumb.JPG.98517f21e9354a5f58aa09aa4f637dec.JPG

IMG_0869.thumb.JPG.9a9194ab56d5f63e8b2a593c85ae50d6.JPG

The JPS Lotus was £1 at the boot sale, half the price of another one I saw later.

The rest were from the toy fair, which was a bit sparse but that was good for my end-of-month cashflow. Apart from the Sierra, they aren't particularly smart, and the Majorette VW and Jeep have missing tailgates, but none of them were very expensive. Even the Transit milk float was only £3.

Trader who sold me the Sierra told me he cuts them up to make P100s, but this one was too good for that fate....

Majorette MK1 Golf is nice. Those VW bay windows often lose their tailgates, about time someone 3D printed a batch...

Picked these up today. 8 wheel tipped was a bargain at 50p, it’s the rare white base one - a boxed one went for £263 on fleabay not so long ago. Got a feeling mines worth closer to the 50p I paid as its heavily chipped. Love the Capri!

image.jpg

I’ve got 4 of them all with varying levels of scuffs to the canopy. At 50p though you can’t complain. Picked up a Superkings Leyland Tipper as well, sans the tailboard but be a spare somewhere.

That Capri looks pretty decent. I'd like to see what that casting would look like on thinner wheels - not the earliest Superfast super-skinny type, but the next ones along.

The Golf has wonky suspension on one corner, but as it's mainly going to be on display and not being driven around on the floor by me on my knees, it's not a problem. Smarter than the black-but-repainted-Humbrol-white example I've had since I was about 10.

Strangely, the bus has a coin trapped inside it. No immediate clue as to how it got there, or what currency/denomination it is......

Posted

Can’t believe how evenly the pink has faded to white on the Capri. Looks better for it! The seller had a load of Super GTs which I should have grabbed for reshelling broken early 70’s ones.

Posted

Was wondering about that 'white' Capri - I've seen a few pretty faded ones, but never one that's completely lost all colour like that.

Is there any of the original shade left up inside the wheelarches or anything? Just wondering if it's degradation caused by UV light, or funny paint or what.

I have a metallic pink Lotus Europa of the same era; one side's still quite a deep pink whereas the other has faded to a pinkish-silver, presumably where the light caught it.

Pink seems to be much more unstable than red on 70s Matchboxes; I'm sure there's technical reasons for that!

Meanwhile, here's an indication of how much quality variation there can be in the 50p market tat boxes... talk about a lucky dip.

20200126_113854.thumb.jpg.d3bce5d1dcb3fc2b454a123ca8ceb61d.jpg

(One on the left is reserved for @Tenmil Socket; the two resto projects are currently winging their way to @sierraman)

I understand the black-bonnet cars were sold singly as part of the 1-75 range, while those with a bonnet the same colour as the body were originally part of a Two Pack with a trailer... Super GT versions came with nothing opening, of course.

Still a cracking model, and one of my all-time favourites!

Oh, and apologies to those who stumped up for their tat box last week and have been waiting patiently by the letterbox ever since - a chronic lack of suitable boxes for posting was remedied only yesterday, when MrsDC managed to swipe another load of empty iPad boxes from the recycling at her work.

So parcels to @Split_Pin and @sierraman should be touching down on Thursday, with a bit of luck. Sorry about the delay folks.

Posted

Yeah the inside of the arches and the slam panel are still a bit pink. Always thought the Super GT one rode a bit high, resembled the 1.3 rather than the 2.0 GT of the original.

Posted

The majorette golf is probably the best representation - better than the matchbox one.

Found this Majorette Transit at the weekend.

It's a sonic flasher, took it a apart and replaced the batteries, and it works, despite the fact that it looks like water has been in there, although only 1 light works, the other one is a bit sporadic.
