I love the concept of someone owning a plutocrat (racing) gold XJ and a caravan.

If that's there next week could you grab it for me please?

Sho' thing!

I had a taxi variant of this when I was little (last seen being zoomed up a slide and into a hedge c.1986), and I currently have a fire chief version in my Nostalgia Box - will certainly grab it if it's still there!

I had the gold XJ6 and caravan, bought from Eaden Lilley in Cambridge about 1988. Can I find it now though..? It definitely didn't have a black roof

I will scan all of these at some point, but I took some pics for now. Matchbox;

There are some castings/colours I've never seen, like this Cortina - only seen gold and pinkish red before - red one looks like an S which makes me want one;

I love the MkIV Cortina, I think it's my favourite Superfast casting of all - I had it in the original metallic greeny-yellow colour (don't know what became of that one) and dark metallic red, which looked a bit like actual Ford Jupiter Red - I still have it, though it's unbelievably worn through living in my pocket for years (seriously, I used to bring it into exams and stuff at school).

I also had it in gold with a black double-stripe over the bonnet and roof, and in plain red (bit like Ford Rosso Red). The blacked-out grille and side strips on that trailer pack look awesome, though - one to look out for.

Quote

Here's a casting I've never seen, only ever listed as a set with a caravan in various colours - on the want list;

I had the original set with the plain red Jaguar, but passed it on last year along with the caravan - but I'll keep my eyes peeled, if you're looking one. I also picked up a metallic blue one for Noel Tidybeard earlier this year, so they are out there (and there was a slightly chewed police version on the stall today, now I think of it)

Quote

I really need this Transit, never seen one!

Again, I'll bear that in mind - there was one on the tat stall last year, before I started taking pics and slapping them up here.

Quote

And I've got to find this XJC

Tough one to find, that - I can't remember whether it was the Avengers version or the Big Cat version, but I think one of them never made it into the shops and only a handful of pre-production prototypes are known to exist. The other was only on sale for only a short time, so I gather they're pretty sought after. Still - never say never!

Dunno if that's the catalogue that also lists a rather nice looking Mk2 Granada, which also got the chop before production?

Cheers for posting those up, dude! Great to see.

As far as I know the Mk2 RS2000 was never done in Castrol livery, the Blue phantom was a twin pack only.

And there was yet more from the depths of the 50p Boxes...

All three of these Superfasts are surprisingly clean and bright underneath, and even the axles are rather straight.

You can see from the last pic that the Lincoln Continental has originally been pale metallic green, but has been treated to a coat of red Humbrol enamel at some stage (fairly neatly done, it has to be said).

Eighties Matchboxes - how hard would it have been to give the Renault the number '5'?

That's just confusing, that.

Mazda later sprouted huge spoilers (like the Zakspeed Capri), to become the IMSA Mazda RX7 in blue/silver.

Odds and sods - the Corgi Transit was, I believe, one of the later petrol giveaway promotionals. Not so common with the older-style wheels, though.

I had the Majorette casting in a later version with big wheels - this one's quite nice, despite damage to the rear hatch.

Corgi Juniors 'Rough Terrain Truck' is an oddity, but I kinda like it.

All of these are up for grabs at 50p each, incidentally!

And yet more... these are all plastic, and all approximately 1/87 scale

Big Scania (?) truck has no manufacturer or any other info, but is quite detailed all the same.

LWB Transit Mk3 looks like a Wiking to me, but says 'Praline' underneath - well, ok. Double-wheel rear axle is nice, though, 'Revell 1987' transfers suggest some sort of promo, maybe?

But the star of the show (hell, of the whole week) has to be this:

The Eko name is vaguely familiar - I think I had some very crude-looking HO scale Citroen 2CVs made by them, which went to Mercrocker last year - and I'm guessing that the Austin Sava was a Spanish name for what the UK knew as the Morris LD150 van.

But just look at it - this little grey van is absolutely gorgeous. The proportions are great, the moulding is crisp, the tiny opening doors (miraculously intact) - this, I suppose, is why I bother my arse poking around these market boxes; for the transcendal moments of stumbling across something I never knew existed, but is simply delightful in its own little way.

Posted

IIRC Sava were a company that licence-built BMC commercials in Spain. I remember loads of Sava-badged J4s chugging around Benidorm in the 80s. The old J4 lived on even longer, being Pegaso-badged by the end of production.

Posted

Yeah, I think I sold Mercrocker a few Eko's last year too. Such a shame he doesn't post here any more - lots of knowledge of older stuff.

I'd have the Lincoln Continental if another box gets started for me please. But really, if someone else jumps in or you want to keep, just go with it!

Got one of those BMC vans from about 25 years ago when I was into model railways, I think it's dark green but you're right, what a nicely detailed and proportional little thing it is. Damned if I can find my gold Superkings XJ but I did come across an almost - replacement sadly lacking a bootlid.

The Volks Dragon was my favourite toy as a child. Got a couple of really nice ones in my collection.

I never had the Cortina as a kid but as my dad had a MKIV 2.0S, I think it's great.

The fixed door Cortina is one of the mid 80’s twin pack issues. It’s also available with day glo windows.

I really like this model of the Leyland Roadrunner; launched not long after the real thing in 1984, the lines of the K120 toy are pretty good - even if it was highly unlikely this 7.5 tonner could be found pulling a car transporter trailer...

1367025115_MatchboxSuperkingsK-120LeylandCartransporter.thumb.jpg.4e73efa0c2f9903a6c1672dbc489c6f4.jpg

In fact, I think I prefer this as just the tractor unit, as the trailer always looked wrong to me.

It had already appeared along with the K-10 Bedford TM transporter (which annoyed me with its bizarrely knobbly tyres and out-of-proportion air hoses)

But then, the TM was an adaption of this fantasy Superking, the K-10...

matchbox-lesney-super-kings-k-10-car-transporter.jpg.d99829d624c5137196b83a551347a6c6.jpg

PLZ NO.

Anyway, I like the wee Leyland, which enjoyed as long and varied a life in the Matchbox lineup as its real-life counterpart.

Nice! Gives me a excuse to dust off my Matchbox Leyland Roadrunner Recovery Truck that I brought as a kid in the 90's. It's got some light play wear and the rear body starring to yellow, but all the features still works including the moveable rear body. Which is operated by repeatedly pressing the battary carrier on the righhand side of the body.

That Leyland Roadrunner is fantastic. I’ve a medley of Superkings tractor units and trailers. None of them match but there’s the fun.

How easy is it to get burago 1/43 cars apart?

Posted

Fairly easy, I think a lot of them are a press fit into the shell. You basically push the tabs out. Might be a bit tight though. I did a Fiat Regatta a few years ago, usually quite nice castings that detail well.

IIRC the Dinky Granada didn’t make production. When the brochures were knocked up they must have been weeks from bankruptcy.

That Dinky catalogue is cool.

Steeds Jag was a very cool car, pity Dinky were on their arse & it never went into proper production.  I think the real Jag was found a few years back ready for restoration (it being totally shagged).

Good to see the Space 1999 Eagles, I had one of those as a kid !
