Shite in Miniature II

That's great! Have you tried riveting the base, sometimes it works if you can drill accurately enough.

Just drill out the rivet and use a small self tapping screw.

Old radios are a good source.

You need etch. I had awful problems with easily damaged paint until I started to use this stuff (between £6-8 for 500ml from your friendly local motor factor, and it'll do dozens of models)

Give the model a light coat of this, then your normal primer. Try and scratch a bit off with your fingernail. If it scratches off, don't bother painting the model - start again.

If it doesn't scratch off, your finished paint job should be quite robust.

^^

This.

And yes, all you need to do is give your diecast a light dusting.

Then prime with whatever primer is cheapest - hint - Poundshop.

After primerisation, use the Micro Mesh finishing kit, but only the coarser three grades.

Then shoot it with paint and be amazed.

I forgot to tell you guys to use the Micro Mesh finishing kit only with a liberal dose of water with a splash of washing up liquid added.

This is important!

Thanks, top advice from everyone as normal.

I'm still in the foothills on this learning curve (now there's a mixed metaphor!)

never used primer on diecasts just car rattle cans (shite 70's leyland/ford/roots colours obvs!)

just waiting for some tyres before the ex dc bostin maurice 1100 reveal

was thinking of "applejack" but someone beat me to it last week- so this is Lidl wheel paint!

Good tips on the primer, chaps....I pick up a lot of half used rattle cans at car boots.   Look out for the giffer shed clearance blokes - you can usually work out their shite CV from the assorted cans of touch up amongst the blunt shears and rusted pliers.

Yeah piles of old Unipart fanbelts, CVH valve spring compressors, then underneath it all a half used tin of Hycote Sandglow Beige.

How do you get the paint stick to the metal?

quick question.......

im about to embark an a resto project and the model im using has small holes in the body where mirrors and wipers were,

these wont be replaced so how do i fill the holes??

Posted

I've just decommissioned some Lada police cars and filled the tiny holes in the roof with car body filler.  Blast of primer, then paint, they should be fine.

Thanks for the primer tips, missing /bollocksed bits now ordered but I'm going to wait until they're here before starting on the Impala. I can't make it look worse but didn't want to mess up the paint job

If it's a diecast, you can use putty. Everyone has his personal preference. I use instant scratch repair sold in small tubes.

The nice thing about diecasts (vs. plastic kits) is that you can't mess them up.

If your paint job turns out to be shit, strip it and start again.

Fun* fact. The roof up version of the 206 CC only ever came in worrying green. Here it is reunited with its equally worrying sister.

it just does whenever i've done it - neither the metroid or bostin have recieved primer!

i watched something years* ago where they showed i think the lesney matchbox paint process and they never used ptimer just the model spinning through a spray paint "alley"

*and i mean something like 35-40 years ago- before we even had 4 channels!

That was lead enamel! It'll stick to anything, including your alveoes.

That newfangled non toxic shit they sell us nowadays just falls off my models if I don't use primer.

halfrauds rattle can still smells like proper cellulose paint

As discussed, this resto has been limited to getting out the silver Sharpie and repainting the wheels and bumpers/grille...

I'm doing well for expanding my 1/72 collection recently. This one has just arrived. It's a Real-X and good ones go for very strong money. This one looked a bit battered and was missing its wheel hubs but was cheap at £2.99 or best offer. It's scrubbed up well as what I thought were chips and scratches on the bonnet turned out to be dirt that soon wiped off and I found a suitable set of hubs in my bits box. There are still a few small chips here and there but for what I paid I'm well chuffed.

I finally sussed how to get a Minichamps Ford Escort mk3 to bits, it is now no longer a south paw!! Need to get some light grey paint though for the dash. Note the slight pimping so it is no longer in buttery biscuit base flavour
