That's lovely and a good price, I doubt it'll ever be worth less! The Great Book of Dinky just has a short entry about the Rolls stating the two colours and all the number plates. It looks as though yours is an early one from 67/68 with the E plate. Funny how they only updated it every two years so there's no F or H plates. The entry that's hard to read because of reflection just says "plastic box"

It looks from the entry above that your nice BROWN RR must be on false plates!

Interesting that. I have a sheet of dinky plates with INJ 72J, I also still have MTB 437E but they're being used on something else.

I bought a sheet of generic UK plates for 1/43s and used whatever was available and seemingly period-correct.

While I was looking for the Royce, I pulled out a few others it was living in a box with.
I think I’ve posted some of these before, but here’s a quick delve into the danthecapriman archives!

If you have a printer, go onto one of those show plate makers websites that offer pre 2001 fonts, type in the plate pair you want, screenshot them,  snip on paint, paste  to word and copy them about 5 times in a range of sizes. Print out the page, cut out the plate that's the right size, laminate it both sides with sellotape and attach with PVA glue.

An inexhaustible supply of (almost) free scale plates!

Here's a 1/24 plate:

Superb thanks for that, good to know it's early, I like early ones of any model for some reason.

Thanks to all who've commented too. Must admit I'm very chuffed with this & I agree Dan these are great toys, I mean who'd put an opening glovebox on kids toy, it's overkill but cool !

Measure up and look on eBay for rhinestones, absolutely loads of choice in a multitude of colours for not a lot

Or alternatively you can buy a sheet of various sized self adhesive ‘jewels’ from the likes of Poundland.

I've just come back for another look at those Dinkys, the Chrysler 180 is particularly nice, I don't think I've ever seen one. I never understood why the Victor FB is so tiny even if it is a good model.

Thanks Dan for sharing them with us.

If you have a printer....

Well, technically, I do have a printer, but it doesn't work. It needs ink and a computer to connect to.

It is a great idea and I used to do something similar, some newspapers used to have adverts for cherished reg plates, I'd cut out what I wanted, laminate them with tape and stick them to the cars with a tiny slither of bluetack.

Of course, I was a kid when I did this. I much prefer buying them for a couple of quid, having them already to cut out and ready to stick on. Much faster, much nicer.

I’m not sure how common or popular the 180 ever was. Maybe in Europe it sold more? It’s a really nice model though.

FB is a funny size. Lovely looking thing though. Another one (like the 101 too!) that they made a great job of but then barely used the casting.
The FB was only ever in yellow or the ambulance. The 101 only that trademark red or the same yellow as the FB. Why not do more colours with them!?

Ive got the Saab 96 too, which again barely saw much use.

I just found this old advert for the Dinky 101 and 1800. May 1965 apparently.

Meccano Magazine May 65 (Back)

Weird they got the colours listed, correct on the 1800 but was the 101 ever released in metallic golden bronze?? I’ve only ever known it in the red or pale yellow.

I always thought my 1800 belonged to my dad as it is chipped and has no box. All the ones belonging to his younger brothers are in good condition and still have their boxes. However 1965 made him 17 at the time and he would have been working for a year and unlikely to still be playing with cars. Even my youngest Uncle would have been over 10 at that time so it would probably have been one of their last purchases. Strange that it isn't in great condition like the others.

Wow, plenty of diecast there which I'd never been aware of before. As you say, that Vauxhall casting is lovely - beautiful detail on it and scale of everything looks spot on.

A tip off by @155V6 lead me to a job lot of frankly knackered Matchbox Land Rovers, of which the Graffic Traffic is the only one I was actually interested in.

Can you let me know if you were successful in cleaning that up please? I've got a few of them kicking around but my feeble attempts to salvage one of them has not reaped the reward that I was expecting.

I’m not actually sure what scale it’s made to? Kind of looks 1:43ish but does anyone know? @flat4alfa?

You can't get the "graffics" off the paint (and sometimes the plastics) as the markers stain the paint. I've tried, believe me.

Matchbox Ford Transit

Matchbox Ford Transit

Matchbox VW Transporter Ambulance Graffic Traffic

Matchbox VW Transporter Ambulance Graffic Traffic

Only option is strip and repaint

Matchbox VW Transporter Ambulance Graffic Traffic resto

I was working on the Land Rover the other night, oven cleaner got the marker off the bull bars but the windows had some deeper stains. In the end I sanded the glazing until it was faint enough not to matter, and polished back to a shine. I took the roof of one of the others and sanded/polished it back to a nice finish

PXL_20250213_174000350.thumb.jpg.1493d1a0830f9abd31d4dc99c8595643.jpg

I do have a problem with the Dakota Street pickup, the white roll bar in the bed is broken and stained, all the other Dakotas have a black plastic bar, I could paint it I suppose but that doesn't look quite right

Posted

Thanks for that. The rs200 i was having a go at started losing its actual paint so i wondered if someone had better luck. It's sitting in a box awaiting a repaint or I'll just move it on, I've a lot of smoll projects 😁 it doesn't cost the earth to buy them unused, just the waiting game.

Some more French French Dinkys

The blue is a bit of a dull colour for this. A pale metallic blue or green would look far better. Separate head lamps, moulded detail in the windscreen and number plates lift this to a better level than the earlier Dinky Toys. This era was peak French Dinky.

From the shelves, this Jimson (Hong Kong) Vauxhall Victor FC 101 decided to show itself off.  Danny the Zulu popped straight over for a nose.

Also the missing the rear bumper.  He commented the Victor 101 has not been modelled by many firms, so that would limit A Who Did it Worse comparison.  However the Dinky Victor 101 turned up in the nick of time:

It seems Jimson did a best-effort copy of the way-too-wide valve cover from the Dinky !

7/11 in pre-decimal money translates to 40p in decimal.  Bargain!

Bloody hell! Shows you how much everything has gone up in the decades since.

40p equivalent when the Dinky Pontiac Parisienne was launched in 1969 had the same purchasing power as £5.70 in today's money.

Still seems pretty good value considering how good those Dinkys were, though not that cheap!

Got my old Corgi Juniors out of the loft. I dread to think how many variables of US Van there are.
