Shite in Miniature II

Another rarity recreated. As well as the white Piston Popper, Matchbox also made a white Saab Sonett. Starting with a fairly good original one;

Matchbox Saab Sonett III custom resto

And ending up with this

Restos give me mixed feelings, as it goes against my normal ethos of removing all the casting lines etc - there's even a bit of flash next to one of the rear side windows. I elected to clean the base up with the wheels attached rather than drilling out the rivets holding the suspension on, I I just masked up to protect the plastic.

I seem to be doing a lot of white MB lately, there's a pile of Graffic Traffics awaiting a coat of it on my workbench

👍 glad you like them, and glad you didn’t get killed for that massive haul!!😆

They look well on display like that, far better use for them than just sitting in a big box in my loft.

Where do people find these job lots? On eBay they seem to go for insane money on stuff that I’d have consigned to the recycling bin, or massive job lots going for daft money but when you look they’re all the really undesirable items like the MB Personnel Carrier.

Mainly eBay for me, I agree a lot of them go for mad money, suits me when I'm selling though.

Sometimes there are hidden gems in poorly described/photographed listings, just got to spend time looking through them

I suppose I’m as bad, a few years ago I sold a load of Stretcha Fetchas, I think they went for something like £15. Christ knows what they wanted them for…🙂

Cheers Rich, I'll hang fire and see if more of those appear in Morrisons, but on the other hand, if you come across another of those white Mazda 323s, I'd be mega  grateful...

This stuff is very good at removing old paint, however it must be treated with care as it will ruin plastic windows and, if left on a painted surface for too long, make the paint go all soft and sticky. I only use it as a last resort.

For less stubborn stains and the stickers I used...

DSCF5456.JPG.a290b47f8b8e64f67233149cf28b0532.JPG

To get the bonnet sticker to lie flat I used a bit of Humbrol Clear Fix

DSCF5453.JPG.bad78dd6f1c2f0fab112fb2582b3aaec.JPG

There's a lot of paint loss on the raised edges, so it must have had some use in the past.

DSCF5452.JPG.fffbee6681f5273880fda0fe079c3723.JPG

The base and tyre are in good condition so it mustn't have been outside and ragged around the patio and flower beds.

DSCF5471.JPG.aa8110efc74701dc4a04bf784342f2a9.JPG

The model is fictitious. The stickers would suggest the 1965 East African Safari Rally, but there was no number 8 Corina on that rally. Also the number plate is a bit of late registration madness.

The box is in fair condition, but playtime must have made the end flap crease weak, leading to its loss.

EBay can be good, but as @bunglebus said, it can mean trawling through loads of listings looking for the stuff that’s badly described or with poor pics. Sometimes the ones to look for are those where the seller is just trying to get rid of a load of old toys - so the pic is of a general pile of toy cars rather than stuff neatly laid out. If you take the time to scrutinise the pics like that it’s sometimes possible to spot a little score!
Word of mouth is another good way though. A few of my best job lots have come that way. In fact some of those ones I sold to you lot came from a pretty decent job lot I got simply by someone talking to someone else and they mentioned me as someone who likes cars… I went to have a look and scored some nice stuff.

Picked one of these up the other day. Shouldn’t be buying things at the moment but, you know…!

IXO pre facelift Granada mk2 estate.

Ive already get a couple of the silver IXO facelift versions (yes, one will be getting painted metallic blue like my old one!) but I can’t resist a Granada! I do intend to repaint this one eventually into a more normal Granny. Extra cool because it’s RHD too.

I do have another 1:43 car on the way from another part of the world too. Again, shouldn’t have but it’s very hard to find so had to do it! And the type of car it is, is absolute weapons grade Autoshite too!

I had that a while ago - a box full of old diecast cars. Turned out it was a pile of old Dayz Gone By, had to break it to them it probably* wasn’t worth the square root of shit.

Sounds like a wind up merchant! I’d just play it back to him about the ‘shop in town’ that you found a Beales Bealson Matchbox Bedford in for fifty pence.

They are the worst, yes! Days Gone and the Yesteryears stuff seem to be absolutely everywhere. It’s unusual to get a job lot that doesn’t have at least one or two in there, or those awful Corgi vintage things they did that are just the cheapest nastiest looking things ever.
They just end up back on eBay! Take whatever you can get from them!

Latest CMC list, starting to see a few I'm just not interested in now. I do like the original Batmobile, but I don't want a Yellow Submarine or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (much as I was very disappointed to find it wasn't on display at Beaulieu when I visited as a kid). I tried to cancel the ice cream van but it was already en route, so I returned it as I think it's too similar to the very first vehicle the club produced

Had a delivery today. I dont mind admitting I've been more than a little excited over this, even though it's really little more than a toy.

IMG_20241105_212554.jpg.0664de3e6bc4db55087d27fd11dc53e7.jpg

This is the Matchbox car that, circa 1986, I hoped and prayed they'd do. I already loved the Astra GTE and XR3i cabriolet they did at that time, and an XR2 would have gone great with those. Still, better late than never!

IMG_20241105_212909.jpg.f7b3102bb429ebd5fc4d844205f4ca09.jpg

IMG_20241105_212806.jpg.31122344134f2e332d301d83b5a16025.jpg

Not mad keen on those wheels, but overall, it looks a little belter.

Ah, screw it, I'm going to  have to actually get this one out of the card aren't I?

IMG_20241105_213635.jpg.ee58692602ac66577e084f48420da2e0.jpg

Quite clever making the lower section in plastic (presumably incorporating the interior unit?), meaning the bumpers and body kit look more realistic than painted bits.

IMG_20241105_213257.jpg.ff01f1f1ff046ec33667371b9ffb310f.jpg

The bumper and front valance are faithful to the real thing. Shame the front spots are missing but I suppose theyd be too fiddly to replicate properly at this scale and price point.

IMG_20241105_213216.jpg.7df10098ab7d5ac638fa24ff002ed227.jpg

The rear end looks really good, note the obligitory big bore pipe!

IMG_20241105_213231.jpg.d127c66d01522c2b2c9498b50584a880.jpg

Nice attempt at the horseshoe rear spoiler and rear wiper.

IMG_20241105_213411.jpg.619cc62a250988d75460f92b834b8591.jpg

Like 1980s Majorettes, there is junk in the trunk, looks like my old Philips Roller from the '80s...

IMG_20241105_213738.jpg.f68e5343b63d06d6ea3bbb21bee1c92d.jpg

Naturally, interior detail is a bit rudimentary, but the dash does look Fiesta-ish.

IMG_20241105_213841.jpg.1c8a99289ca3aeadd7113b1393182892.jpg

Another good thing is that this is another toy/model (delete as appropriate) of a real car I owned, as Mk2 Fiestas are unbelievably hard to get/expensive in miniature. After having 2 shite cars after I passed my test, I wanted something in actual nice condition, and a bit sporty. Being the early '90s and in the middle of the period of the TWOCing problem in this country, and crazy premiums on hot hatches for young drivers, I couldnt afford to insure an XR2,  (£1200 for a 19 year old back in 1993!) so settled for an immaculate low mileage white 1.4 S, which was the next best thing.

IMG_20241105_213816.jpg.7953b72c5b60b9b263904f76f1cded11.jpg

With thanks to AliExpress again, (prices for these on ebay are stratospheric) for taking me back to my teens for a while.

Just need Corgi to pull their finger out and get their Vanguards Mk2, that they've had in the pipeline for ages, out now!

This was also in the same 2025 case as the Fiesta, so as I've got equally fuck-all chance of finding one of these in the shops as the Fiesta, I plumped for this to make up the postage,

IMG_20241105_224903.jpg.ed0877adf5030d007c8405977c0916df.jpg

I was a big fan of the blue 240, it seemed a nice realistic colour that loads of 240s came in, and the same goes for this nice ruby red version. Looks like a slight bronze tint on the glazing on this one, which looks 'period'.

IMG_20241105_224927.jpg.863d9cbdf5df39947e9ae722c501a205.jpg

Shame about those wheels (again), surely their hubcap wheels would be more suitable both in style and scale, but its still a nice looking thing. Little details like the moulded in mudflaps please me...

IMG_20241105_224941.jpg.363d27382cc173fc4645fbbe416bbd49.jpg

Like on the blue one, I love the grille and headlamp washer detail,

Do we think this will come in with/without versions, like the MK1 Golf, VW T3 etc?
