Which is that? I’ll be honest, I only bought them to flip for beer money for when I go on holidays. I only keep things that I like.

Think there was one of these in among the lots you bought

I've been going all nerdy looking at the details as there were quite a few subtle differences on the real thing over the years.

I'm saying it's a really early one, with pressed metal vents behind the side windows, long handle on the sliding door and small lock on the tailgate. Being as the petrol engines were air cooled for the first few years until the Wasserboxer engines came along, but this has the two grille front panel, it must be a diesel.

Some early t3s had an extra grille on the front if they had aircon fitted.

I had to drive diesel t3 van back in the mid 90s for a couple of months. It was a non-turbo 1.6 and was slower than a late t2 with the Type 4 engine. I also drove a water cooled t3 bus for a bit, that was a rocket ship in comparison.

Delivery from far off places today.

Ebro Coke truck. Which is actually a Thames ET6. You can get these fairly easy and cheaply so I’ll be making this a bit more British looking. Different paint job and a flatbed or something on back.

Nice little Mini van, a service van for Ebro trucks.
Wipers are a bit chunky and crude but the rest is actually rather nice. Oddly it’s actually right hand drive!

IMG_3501.thumb.jpeg.e8b03aa45385ab84dbbc80d0d2522fa6.jpeg

IMG_3502.thumb.jpeg.23e5251f405b484cb8142523462ed1f1.jpeg

And one to shame the likes of Vanguard’s!
Sava (Austin) J4 van. Seen in huge numbers the length and breadth of the UK through the 60’s and 70’s and instantly recognisable, and yet Vanguards choose to ignore it and churn out yet more Focus RS’s and modern Transits etc etc.

Not sure what it’s supposed to be transporting, looks like some kind of beverage??

Some thing rings a bell that Soberano is brandy or cognac.

*Useless anecdote* Shortly after I was born, Fatha_Outlaw was working for the local council, driving a J4. He rolled it avoiding a speeding LandRover (SWL701D?) coming the other way.

You were right, it’s brandy apparently. I’ve never heard of it though.

It’s a brandy. Lovely stuff, goes down like a pint of Duckhams on a warm morning.

I have a couple I'm converting to single-cab pickups, because in the 80s I drove a pair of diesels at work (A369 GFV and C279 KCK).

Next 1/24 project underway:

IMG_9304.thumb.JPG.64fe96be73c8b5834cd99871d55f40c5.JPG

Comes with an engine, but is moulded with the bonnet shut and there's no real underbonnet detailing so I'm not bothering. The L24 'six' will be useful for other Datsun projects.

Finally got around to sorting out the Cogbox that recently arrived. I have to admit to not really knowing how much Friday market tat I had saved up, big thanks to @Datsuncog  for keeping hold of it for so long!

I was in two minds to post a lot of this on, after the Vanguards vitriol on here of late and the kicking that the last Vanguards purchase got. (tailpipe-gate). But what the hell, the pictures have been taken so here we are...

IMG_20240201_143246_edit_221777714825814.thumb.jpg.09aab93e19f6cc739d2faff1482c3e28.jpg

From the earlier yellow box days, I didn't actually really go for Vanguards back then as 1/43 collecting hadn't got as much under my skin. I did get a couple of the Anglia 105Es as my dad had owned a real one and I'd always wanted a nice model of one.

IMG_20240201_143640.thumb.jpg.cb97a45a2a322e99d1a185500dc5c868.jpg

Its in very nice condition, this P6. The packaging is immaculate and the car even still has the clear plastic protector on the roof. Sadly the chrome on the bumpers has suffered but that should be easily sorted. Early Vanguards days so we have cast-in wipers, painted lights and solid suspension. Bonus points though for a decent representation of the 2000 wheel trims.

IMG_20240201_143753.thumb.jpg.5b795bdb5dd470f562696dc130aa458c.jpg

The shape is captured well, the casting lived on quite a while, being upgraded to series 2 V8 spec. This will compare nicely with the Mexico brown V8S that I also have.

IMG_20240201_143657.thumb.jpg.e1d042ea0bc235d26e492daedf305445.jpg

Massive number plate font but nicely done Viking badge.

IMG_20240201_143708.thumb.jpg.53c9d5c0cf7971203b02b570e6752833.jpg

IMG_20240201_143809.thumb.jpg.9242edc31dda55ed11cfe3ffdbb0f387.jpg

Not bad interior detail for the time. In some ways better than some later Vanguards with the black trim on the dashboard and black steering wheel. A lot of later releases had one colour for the whole interior moulding.

IMG_20240201_143848.thumb.jpg.0b814f9887055f16558b1c879c0bac45.jpg

A nice early version of the Rover and another gap filled!

IMG_20240201_144146.thumb.jpg.41a903dc148cbded232a935c9b9181ec.jpg

Another one I didn't get at the time. Again, the box is in great condition. Sadly the model itself looked like it was grabbed from a dusty display shelf and shoved in the box.

IMG_20240201_144750.thumb.jpg.cc99c6d662f2fe4ece5c3770639feac0.jpg

But it cleaned up nicely!

IMG_20240201_144856.thumb.jpg.564a5c996ffd375c4d8868bff1ec1ef3.jpg

In great condition generally, again the chrome has suffered a bit but not as bad as the Rover. Pleasingly the mirrors have never been fitted and are still sealed in the bag.

IMG_20240201_144805.thumb.jpg.79761d16f9370c279640a096567591fb.jpg

Nice front and rear detail. The Capri badge looks nice.

IMG_20240201_144821.thumb.jpg.badfafae1d2707e46c46e3e55bfc005d.jpg

Some body colour and a splash of silver helps the dashboard detail, with an optional radio seemingly fitted. Nice wheel too.

IMG_20240201_145024.thumb.jpg.c4527350a834454ef269f81d6e69a17a.jpg

IMG_20240201_145145.thumb.jpg.ff1baed797acab9a291feee8d4b5ea8e.jpg

Moving on a bit, kind of phase 2 for the range and around the time I really started to get into the range with the introduction of castings I was really interested in like the Allegro, Marina and MK1 Granada. Better detailing too like body mouldings and badging, photo etched wipers, less generic wheel designs, better lights and sprung suspension.

IMG_20240201_145213.thumb.jpg.dcab599ebd40e6f1750cd1c8b7c7dede.jpg

Groo! Out with the wipes and polishing cloth again.

IMG_20240202_133234.thumb.jpg.b4af81367ce09672e98b74863e2f3000.jpg

This one also came up nicely! Mirrors still sealed in the bag with this one too.

IMG_20240202_133314.thumb.jpg.470551cb925d36f97db72ab5a345d8ef.jpg

Always been a fan of the Farina's styling. As a kid in the late '70s-early '80s there were still quite a few kicking about as daily drivers.

IMG_20240202_133332.thumb.jpg.e7029d2200c1dba9638c13c6aefe9668.jpg

One thing that I like about this release is the slightly incongruous white and yellow plates on it  Reminds me of the Farinas I saw as a kid having had a mid '70s cosmetic tart-up with a blow-over respray and  new reflective plates fitted.

IMG_20240202_133352.thumb.jpg.5caea7a10f8587676b9200326bb067ff.jpg

IMG_20240202_132732.thumb.jpg.e590c66b4168c867d26e9bfa750e3891.jpg

One of my all time favourites Vanguards castings, the MK1 Granny/Consul. (Barring the slightly too-small wheels...)

IMG_20240202_132821.thumb.jpg.4f1210e78a3d4d685da94becc73cde84.jpg

I'm actually undecided what to do with this one now. I was after a cheap, rough police GT to rob the spotlights and wheels to GT-ise a base Consul in the collection. In the market report pics this one looked ideal as it looked  quite dog-eared.

IMG_20240202_132850.thumb.jpg.0f21da3343142d53050154814febd3dd.jpg

But apart from the small bits of paint loss at the front, it's actually pretty nice.

IMG_20240202_132908.thumb.jpg.760e4c8fe5ab2f774c4ee7e622e236fb.jpg

The roof box and light are actually intact, unusual for cheap police versions. I've always liked the fact the Lancashire police cars were modelled with the missing section of livery, as on the real cars (specified because of spills from the fuel filler).

IMG_20240202_133619.thumb.jpg.ea0bd26198e6b56c6744c28442a41dde.jpg

A nice companion for the Pat Moss A40 rally I got last year.

IMG_20240202_133633.thumb.jpg.3138462b9d2126f8e8f3d5e38c31e214.jpg

In lovely condition, even has the protective tissue paper from the factory.

IMG_20240202_133728.thumb.jpg.d05c9d4dbbd4c9c103ab9b7b7f044447.jpg

I love  models with hubcap-less steelies! The real car as modelled was apparently Graham Hill's Speedwell-tuned A35 but it reminds me of something a yoof would have blezzed around in in the '60s or '70s. Only needs a bit of chequered tape and a couple of STP stickers...

IMG_20240202_133810.thumb.jpg.9839f9df8bc32745ba26bcc4c39809d5.jpg

IMG_20240202_133748.thumb.jpg.6a656e872220f5cab13419a581628df3.jpg

IMG_20240202_134058.thumb.jpg.2eec3eefff21700cd9bf020824465855.jpg

And a bit of a departure now. Fully into the Corgi era now, even though the Lledo name was still clinging onto the packaging.

IMG_20240202_153527.thumb.jpg.1452121c6a7474c5acb61e5a01018793.jpg

So, around this time, they went "a bit Minichamps" with a mixture of old, modern-classic and current models.  The slide-off lid boxes were replaced with plastic plinths and acrylic cases and detailing went up a notch. Sadly the more modern subjects were, to put it mildly, unsuccessful, (although time has been kind to some of them and castings like the Mk2 & 3 Cavalier, Nova SR, L322 Range Rover, Mk2 Golf, Peugeot 205 and 309 are now a lot more sought after). The Vanguards Astra H actually sold very well in police trim (and weirdly, as an RAC driving school car) but in ordinary road trim, they were hard to shift and could be had on eBay for years for a few quid. Strangely though, as the H has got popular with the banger racer fraternity, the model versions have been hoovered up by guys on the banger models sites, I saw one the other day on the Frizy Banger Models page on FB go for £15 and it was only the shell, baseplate and wheels... This one's in far better nick, even the usually-lost mirrors and aerial are present and correct.

IMG_20240202_153548.thumb.jpg.21437bea58d577842742cd82e8f84b01.jpg

So the detailing is pretty much up to the Minichamps standards of the time, great headlights in particular and the headlight washers and towing-eye cover picked out. The little GB flags on the number plates are a symbol of the era too.

IMG_20240202_153632.thumb.jpg.c0c36812a0f8b2a71e665de63184dc41.jpg

The frosted effect of the tail lights is done nicely. The badges in the chrome strip are miniscule but are there. Nice SXi spec tailpipe. (I believe it's at the correct angle...)

IMG_20240202_153703.thumb.jpg.ae847608a3e1ab808584478446c78e84.jpg

Correct SXi spec snowflake alloys too.

IMG_20240202_154259.thumb.jpg.a863d82216b41dda249e1217584107ea.jpg

Last of the Vanguards, this poor thing was languishing on the top of the market stall table looking a bit sad. It seems to have had a visit from the patented Cogbath valeting process and had the mangled wiper sorted at the Cogworks workshop, so it's now looking quite spiffy. To be honest, at a fiver I did eye it up just as a donor of those superb slotmags for one of my fast Ford projects, but Im very happy to keep this as it is now.

IMG_20240202_154316.thumb.jpg.dcacc7e8293578417f58d1c8ef2c012a.jpg

Unusually for a Vanguards model, this one has a trick up its sleeve. With a flick of a lever,

Wakey-wakey!

IMG_20240202_154343.thumb.jpg.44cd7c3a8e5f1d67833df69a2403a958.jpg

IMG_20240202_154410.thumb.jpg.4de8d8f04dfec41b420d607270260323.jpg

Great colour combo, nice to see the black plastic moulding of the engine cover continue round to the door panels and dash. Sadly, it's lost its door mirror but it doesn't notice that much really.

IMG_20240202_154755.thumb.jpg.71fc7f0066379c78a51d48cc9cc2e8eb.jpg

Good rear detail with glazed lights and nice tailpipes.

IMG_20240202_154708.thumb.jpg.db6fcbde77571d7835b25ab8bc24ed53.jpg

Those wheels are quite lovely, with tiny Lotus centre caps. Nice Esprit graphics too.

Cogbox other brands,

IMG_20240201_120323.thumb.jpg.b8282f300ef019359237a72083824d01.jpg

This one I was really looking forward to receiving! 1/76 isn't really a scale I go for much, but I had to have one.

IMG_20240201_120337.thumb.jpg.394dcb16c67d4630217940147f4c8fdf.jpg

For it's diminutive size, it's captured very well and the detailing is good, particularly the Austin-Rover grille badge.

IMG_20240201_120354.thumb.jpg.c9b6a324f6761414f6b7f6366c019328.jpg

Again, at the rear, the badging is superb. How they do it at this scale, I don't know. The black trim around the rear screen and side windows is particularly neat as well.

IMG_20240201_120538.thumb.jpg.db6a73b63cb328ed966bbd18e91cf5b5.jpg

Interior detail is good too, again for the scale,

IMG_20240201_120508.thumb.jpg.208c38f125122ba2bdf2396037424ce4.jpg

While I disagree with some of the brickbats thrown at Corgi and the Vanguards range, I can only agree 100% that the boss of Corgi/Oxford needs to stop ignoring collectors and get a Maestro done in 1/43.

IMG_20240202_154954.thumb.jpg.4e6362c8d193b3db8584f5f8fcc506c9.jpg

Being an idiot who likes German saloons, I put my hand up for this Cararama BMW thinking it was an E46 3 series and thought it would go well with my Cararama W203 C Class. Sadly it turned out to be an E39 5 series, but all the same, it's not a bad model. Bar an odd mark on the windscreen, it's in pretty good nick.

IMG_20240202_155010.thumb.jpg.86901db5b9dc0180130f06c539414084.jpg

Obviously these are made down to a low price, but on the whole, they don't look too cheap.

IMG_20240202_155053.thumb.jpg.ae0e4f2b430b1a329df4255b2dc64d15.jpg

Nice glazed lights, and the wipers aren't too clunky for a cheapie, but it's a shame the tampo printer slipped with the kidney grills...

IMG_20240202_155029.thumb.jpg.2c05c6fb3d7609be1a73b6549e6e21ec.jpg

Again glazed tail lights and decent badges, but for some reason, someone's shoved an M5 style quad exhaust system onto a 528i...

IMG_20240202_155307.thumb.jpg.c27fd1ddec9c9f2f3640100c8835f20a.jpg

Following the Abrex Skoda Superb dealer model I got recently, I was glad Tim grabbed me this Octy for a fiver. Missing the cardboard outer packaging but the plinth looks good and the almost opaque acrylic case looked better after a polish up.

IMG_20240202_155447.thumb.jpg.6fdaad90d101ae815399ed48d1cb0772.jpg

The model itself is in great condition, the paint has a nice deep shine. The shape of the Octavia is captured perfectly. A Mk2 2.0TDi was the last car I drove as a cabbie and it was a decent place to spend a long shift.

IMG_20240202_155725.thumb.jpg.be5c3418e377220b99208080917672fa.jpg

Like the Superb, detailing is to the usual modern Euro model standard.

IMG_20240202_155706.thumb.jpg.c0fa55f24b9461f29bd490a18abda9c8.jpg

Great badging, strange to see a diesel version modelled, though apart from the VRS versions, that's likely how the majority of Mk2 Octys were ordered...

This was an unexpected one. I thought Tim was keeping this one for a while, so it was a nice surprise to find it in the box.

I'm a real perv for dealer models, especially promo ones that weren't for general sale.

My fave is this Vauxhall/Saab one launching the 1.9 CDTi/TiD engines, featuring a Minichamps Astra H

Quite rare too, as the Minichamps Astra is next to impossible to get in RHD Vauxhall form. Must see how it compares to the Vanguards one.

Ive also got one of those MK1 Laguna ones, as talked about on here recently with the massive display box

This one's great, the turntable moving the car round with a little thumbwheel. The model itself, being a Norev is also superb with all the detail you'd expect.

Found another Smyths. Not much exciting in it, a zillion identical Team Transports at a reduced price

And a few different 1:43 Hot Wheels but nothing for me...

A couple more 1/76 Oxfords have been floppytopped. I've never really liked the look of the Ford Consul Classic/Capri until I found a photo of the Crayford version and thought it looked so much nicer with the roof gone.

And while I was at it, a Mk1 Cortina got the same treatment.

Cogbox other brands,

This one I was really looking forward to receiving! 1/76 isn't really a scale I go for much, but I had to have one.

For it's diminutive size, it's captured very well and the detailing is good, particularly the Austin-Rover grille badge.

Again, at the rear, the badging is superb. How they do it at this scale, I don't know. The black trim around the rear screen and side windows is particularly neat as well.

Interior detail is good too, again for the scale,

While I disagree with some of the brickbats thrown at Corgi and the Vanguards range, I can only say that the boss of Corgi/Oxford needs to stop ignoring collectors and get a Maestro done in 1/43.

Obviously these are made down to a low price, but on the whole, they don't look too cheap.

Nice glazed lights, and the wipers aren't too clunky for a cheapie, but a shame the tampo printer slipped with the kidney grills...

Again glazed tail lights and decent badges, but for some reason, someone's shoved an M5 style quad exhaust system onto a 528i...

Following the Abrex Skoda Superb dealer model I got recently, I was glad Tim grabbed me this Octy for a fiver. Missing the cardboard outer packaging but the plinth looks good and the almost opaque acrylic case looks better after a polish up.

IMG_20240202_155447.thumb.jpg.6fdaad90d101ae815399ed48d1cb0772.jpg

The model itself is in great condition, the paint has a nice deep shine.

Like the Superb, detailing is to the usual modern Euro model standard.

Great badging, strange to see a diesel version modelled, though apart from the VRs versions, that's likely how the majority of Mk2 Octys were ordered...

Lovely haul.

I remember it was April 1996 when the first Vanguards arrived in my local Model shop and I was really excited about this new range. I was especially looking forward to getting the Anglia 105e as I had never seen one before at a swapmeet for some reason.

They were a bit of a revelation after only really having Corgi Classics since 1987. I wasn't disappointed with them although I recall the really early ones had chrome rather than clear lights.
