Trigger's Mk3 Cortina

So car buying, how's it going?, Not well at the moment, Still hunting for that right car, I'd difficult to find what you want when you don't know that it is yourself.

First i was quite taken in my this, I think they look great and i love Seth's estate, after firing the guy a email i decided that A) It's too far, B) It's too expensive for a Minx c) It's only a 1500, I'd sooner have a 1725 and D) That interior was far too jazzy.

I then spend a bit of time thinking about this one, I do like 80's Fords and I'd love a car with spot lights (Fickle i know), But as nice as this one is it just reminds me of my younger days of seeing them being ragged to death on the Essex high streets with blue smoke pouring out the exhausts and some Blondie 16 year old tart noshing off her boyfriend down the "patch"

Now this is very nice, This is the only old VW that i like, The owners told me that he'd accept £2500 for it but again it's miles away in Southampton, it's been for sale for a few months which seems strange and looking on his site it's had a shed load of rust repairs done on it http://vw1600e.org.uk/car/

And more importantly i know nothing about them, It's the fuel injection model as which sounds like it could be troublesome?, on and it's the slightly later shape with the longer front which isn't quite as good looking.

And so tonight there's this, It's local and I've never seen it at any shows although I have seen it in the owners driveway, It's been sat outside for a few years now which would have done wonders for the rust but I do know he paid £600 for it back in 2009 and it's only done 40000 miles, but putting me off the most is the fact it's been resprayed a slightly different colour.

heres a photo of it from a few years ago, as well as a bit more about it. http://www.thewatchforum.co.uk/index.ph ... opic=44842

I'm not the biggest fan of the styling of the Mk4/5 Cortina's but I'd still like to give a 2.3 V6 manual a try, and at £1200 it doesn't sound over priced.

So there you have it, the ramblings off a slightly deranged mind.

£1200 does leave you a few pennies to get it to your taste Triggsy, plus if you had a Tina, Oldfordy would be round at your house so fast it would be unbelievable.

An XR3 on a W-plate? It's worth having for that reason alone. It would be even better if it was Prairie Yellow (the best XR3 colour bar none, IMO), though :D

I like the Cortina as well. Pity that it's not its original colour, though. However, the respray looks pretty good.

Shep you can tell your from Essex because you know a yellow existed! A non Injection XR3 is solid future £££, for when £10k RS1600i/Turbo's are the norm, BUY IT! I will even let you scan my press pack!

I'd back the XR3... but the allure of the Cortina is just too much to bear. And I'm deeply intrigued to know why the owner thought a set of Mondeo GLX wheel covers would be appropriate in any way.

I'm originally from Kent (I lived there from my birth in 1977 until 2001), where XR3s and XR3is were very popular with upwardly mobile maniacs in the 1980s and 1990s; I used to see a couple of early XR3s in Prairie Yellow in the Dover area right up until the late 1990s :)

I'd love that XR3, as it would look GR9 on the Esplanade of a Saturday night, but two cars is already enough for me! I wouldn't mind seeing some scans of that press pack, though

That VW is nice......even though I don't generally like VW it is pretty

Why wporry about the rust.........you are looking for any old car so it will either have visible rust, disguised rust or repaired areas.......and anyway those repairs look to have been done well with lod metal cut out and replaced rather than plated over. Certainly better than some (most)of the wob filled blown, sanded with a house brick shit that appears on the bay.

Just a thought

I saw that Cortina April last year, I bumped into the old boy who still owned it outside Comet, He had it from new and the only fault he's ever had with it was the radio stopped working once, Sadly it's gone through a few hands since then and now belongs to a young lad who's fitted chavy wells on to it, He wants to much for it as well.

No doubt the last seller got it very cheap as he worked for a local motor factors.

A Super Minx is never going to be fast enough to light up the tarmac, but it should be no worse than the Kadett in traffic. Where it will score, apart from the pure style, is comfort. These things are like driving a bed! If you don't buy peteh's Renault, this would be a satisfying substitute.

Posted

I suppose being an early one that would have the 1592cc engine? I like the Minxes - they're an eminently capable car, and far more civilised than the Kadett on a run due to more torque and higher gearing. I drove a normal Minx (same colour as that one, same year and same engine) back from Melksham to Norwich and it coped with the M4/M25/M11 just fine.

I still think you should buy the 16 though.

I believe it's the 1592cc model, It looks very nice and i like the colour, I might ring up tomorrow about it.

I remember seeing the old boy and his missus driving this around Clacton until quite recently, unsurprisingly usually followed by a long queue of slow traffic! It's a shame to see it lightly barrified (even if I quite like the wheels) and it's lost the door stripes along the line too. Always looked a tidy old thing and well cared for, hope it goes to someone who'll give it the same TLC for many more years.

Buy it Trig!!

That Cortina must be worth a look as they are reverseable mod's. Soon have it back as it should be and get some coin selling off those horrible alloys. Early Cortina 80's (Well any mk3 / 4 / 5 ) are brilliant cars if you avoid the v6 2300.

Posted

The red Cortina 1.6 won't come with those rip off minilite alloys, its buried away in the (awful) ad writing. So hopefully you get it on the mint originals. I'd be looking at both Cortinas if I was you Trig, that red one does look minty fresh but the 2.3 Ghias a very nice spec, and rare too (IIRC less than 10 in the UK).

I was watching that went it came on ebay for about £1195 buy it now, It looks a nice one but i don't want a automatic.

I'm currently trying to think of a way to raise and justify an extra £500 over budget to buy this bad boy and trying to decided why it's so cheap yet not sold.

am selling my MK1 4 door GT cortina.

I've had it about 3 years and really enjoyed it. This is not a concourse car but is in very presentable condition.

It has had what looks to be quite a bit of welding done and a respray. Neither by me.

When the steering conversion was done it meant going to a rear bowl sump which was a pain and caused a few headaches.

GOOD POINTS

genuine GT

steering conversion

gearbox reconditioned ( but stick does rattle)

diff rebuilt

engine rebuilt

new twin 40's on new manifold

new front calipers and discs

beztec ignition

BAD POINTS

can be a sod to start when cold ( but always starts )

had a fair bit of welding

paint bubbling on bottom of doors, boot, etc

interior not the best but presentable

there is probably loads of other stuff I've forgotten. plus a good few spares such as original calipers, starter motor and rear lights etc

selling due to downsizing and just not using it that much, 3-4 runs a year. would love to see it go to someone who will enjoy it. Viewing not a problem, Peterborough, Cambs. £4,500.00 or might take an offer. If it does not sell then might stick it on ebay but not to keen on that idea.

It's now at £3000 though, the sills look iffy and i dislike the wheels (Though that's easily sorted)

Money wise I can't see how you could lose out on that Trig, unless it's terminally Isopon-ed to the max. Ok, it's not a two door but Mk1s are fetching decent coin these days and being a GT it will command a premium.

This, alas, is miles from you and is something of a crap advert but has full MOT and looks the part...

That Mk1 GT would appear to tick all the boxes - kwality cars 8)

That Audi, already in the Ebay thread, is the stuff of dreams. The clash between interior and exterior is simply divine! That's a proper 'if I had a barn and lots of cash' car.

Posted

I have to agree with Dolly, that is pure pornography is that Audi. Green & orange. How more 70s can you get?

Posted

Most 70's German tin leaves me unmoved, but that Audi is BEAUTIFUL.

Chop chop, Trig. No time for the Christmas jumper. It's the new year - schnell!
