Trigger's Mk3 Cortina

If I'm honest although i like that Audi, (the colourings awesome), i personally wouldn't want to be spending £3000 of my money on it, If it was £2000 then things might be different.

That Mk1 Cortina is still for sale but the seller has been a nightmare for sending photos of the rust and has also said in the listing that a few people who have seen it have said it's not worth £2000 let alone £3000 making me think it's a shit heap.

The seller of this has randomly emailed me tonight to offer this to me for £1400, he must be getting desperate now as he originally said he wouldn't let it go for any less then £1700.

I'm just not sure if it's what i really want, It reminds me of the Mk3 Escort, a nice fill in car but not something that excites me too much, I feel that if i buy it a week later something else will turn up which is even better and i won't have the money for it, That's the reason why i still haven't bought anything yet.

To be honest I couldn't understand why you were even considering that Cortina. It just doesn't look right to me...and that paintwork looks TOO bright. And after the Opel, just a bit....bland?

The Audi on the other hand does look a lovely genuine car and you can tell that the seller has taken the time to take some decent photos. But like you say, it's more than you want to pay.

You need to hold out out for something that really makes you say 'WOW!'..... I see loads of stuff I fancy buying but then I then sleep on it a couple of days and see if still has the WOW factor. Usually it has worn off.

I know how great it is to have money burning a hole....but buy in haste repent at leisure!

I think you've just hit the nail on the head!, I agree with all of that that you wrote, apart from the too bright comment, I saw the Cortina last year and it is unpainted and still that bright (or was at least), The old boy said he used to wash and polish it every week.

I am struggling to find that right car after owning the Kadett, i see plenty of stuff i fancy but after a while thinking about i decide that it's not quite right, my dad thinks I'm mentally unstable for all the cars i keep coming with as well!

One of the reasons i sold the Kadett was because last year i saw loads of really nice stuff for sale at car shows within my budget which i fancied, but as you say, I'm in no really though and i am i'm in a good position as i have the cash ready, I'm just craving something shite to drive!

I agree with boodydoo. If you're not sure about that red Cortina then leave it.

With the white GT, my opinion is that if it was a halfway decent car it would have sold for around the £4k mark, he wouldn't have to be discounting it. The sills do look a bit iffy, the trouble with the older Cortinas is that a lot of people don't restore them well, some of the shapes in the body (around the rear wheelarches is a good example) are a mix of quite complex bends and curves and most amateurs and cheaper bodyshops have forgotten what a proper one looked like in the first place. They just bodge on a new pair of pattern arches, and fill whatever gaps are left with filler and hope. Old Skool Ford type generic bits don't help either - the 'restorer' of that white one probably didn't even know, for example, that GTs have a full width front bumper, not the Lotus quarter ones.

There was a blue Mk1 estate in one of the Classic Ford mags in 2010, the car had been 'restored on a budget' and not one panel lined up with another, let alone looked right.

P. S. Are you looking at too many different types of car? maybe if you stuck to (as an example) just Fords, or just Cortinas, or even just whatever mark of Cortinas, you might find it easier. You do have to be prepared to travel a bit more though (although you probably in the right part of Britain for Fords!!!)

Buy a £400 shed and save up a bit more for when the show season starts - buy one there and Bobs your mothers brother.

That Audi is well worth £3,000, and it would be sitting in my garage had I not bought the Avant. :D

The car is basically concourse having had a complete respray, engine and suspension rebuild. I reckon the cost was three times the asking price.

Yeah, I agree with what your saying Anthony, That's what put me off the Mk1, I do have a massive soft spot for old Fords, I've always have, the trouble is that they are way out of budget these days for anything decent.

There was a stunning Corsair last year on ebay with a £2000 BIN but it ended up selling for £3200, I would have been all over that, even though it was in Wales, I don't mind travelling to a extent, I drove 400 miles round trip when i collected the BMW, I guess I've been scorned a bit though after the Celeste incident last year which has made me much more wary of traveling a long way to view a car.

That Chevette is lovely isn't it, The seller of it seems to have some really nice stuff in his collection, the bronze Cortina is also tasty.

I've been watching that Mk2 Cortina a number of times on ebay, the sellers seems to be having problems shifting it, I think he wants ab out £3000 for but i get put off as i expect a 1300cc to be a bit underpowered.

Oh and the beige Mk4 Cortina is hot as well, i love the rear tin number plate!

Remember Trig, Mk2 Cortinas weight naff all compared to modern stuff, so a 1300 shouldn't be too bad, particularly if its a Crossflow. 1300s went OK in Mk2 Escorts, which probably didn't weigh any more. The 1300 was underpowered in the Mk3 onwards, but that was a heavier and wider car.

Also there's lots of little mods you can do (which undo easily to go back to original spec) which would bump up the bhp.

 If the suspense is killing you imagine what it's doing to me!, I have £2300 cash waiting for the right car that just isn't springing out at me at the moment.

Everyday I've been trawling though ebay, carandclassic, classiccarsforsale, autotrader, various car forums and Classic Car Weekly and there's been very little worth getting excited over!.

I put it down to being a funny time of year, Last year i saw loads of interesting stuff for sale that i fancied, both that green Chevette and the Mk2 Cortina are on my watch list with me keeping a keen eye on them although the Chevette is in North Wales with is a long way from here.

This has popped up tonight locally for £1995 and looks like a fun way to blow £2k, It's the same seller who was selling the Mk2 3.0 Ghia Capri until a few days ago so I'm guessing it's a trade in from that.

I can agree with that, My Kadett was only a 1196cc but nipped along surprisingly well.

Oh aye, this....

...was in a local (ex-Vauxhall) dealer's showroom in Chester for two large. Have to say that although it looks tidy the earlier recessed headlight models looks much nicer.

*Edit: may have gone now as not showing on their stock list...
