I'm always a bit wary about collection threads when collecting unknown cars as I've had a few bad experiences so I'm hoping this is going to be ok!

So my mate picked me up at 9.30am to take me to Nottingham in his ZT, I'm paying the fuel so I've already sunk £50 into this collection!

Note the chavtastic tinted windows, plowerflow exhaust sounds good though. Spotted this Wolesley too.

I think this picture will sum up the day perfectly.

Exciting!  You always get good cars Trig.  Am I the only one who doesn't know what it is?

Can't picture you in a camouflage Dyane so is it maybe your turn with the BX estate?

Posted

Slightly off topic but is that blue 2600 VDP still sat on that drive in Ipswich?

IIRC it went through an MOT last year then sat dormant again.

Yes it's still on the drive under a tarp, I keep thinking about knocking after it!

It's the gold 90, the temptaion of a 5 cylinder is drawing me in!

I made it there and after a little negotiation as it wasn't as nice is I thought I now own it!

Fab.  Very much looking forward to hearing about the not-so-nice bits, to stop me feeling quite so jealous of your extra cylinder, pinstripe velour and GOLDness.

Looks ace, youl have to slick back your hair and carry a huge brick of a phone to complete the look!

I recon with your paintwork skills and a bit of TLC that will look better in no time, love it!

Lovely motah, are these the ones with a galvanised chassis ?

Posted

Yep, fully galvanised body.  My 80 (similar vintage) hasn't got any rust on it anywhere.

Was it an eBay job, Triggly? For the price you paid, it's a bargain alright.

I have a 90-related tale, but it's entirely possible that the Guardia Civil are still looking for us...

I thought you needed the Quattro version to drive upside down in the rain?

Posted

Sadly the last one of these I had was on the back of my truck heading for the baler.

Very nice.

5 Cylinders are for winners.

Not if it should be a six or an eight

I'm suck at live collection threads! Mind you I'm home now so i can update it PROBABLY.

The sellers house in a place called Gedling near Nottingham, there's some nice hills around there, one was so steep i thought we was going to take off at the top!, the car was outside when we arrived, to be honest it wasn't quite a nice as made out with screws holding bottom door trims on, quite a few little scabs and when it was running it started to splutter and stall, this helped negotiations a bit, my mate said i should have walked away at this point and just as i did the seller asked what i wanted to pay for it!.

After a little haggle amount more than £400 but less than £600 was agreed on and i was away, the car was running on flumes which i think was part of the running problem, £40 in the tank put the gauge 3/4 full and it seemed happier, the fuel pump does hum quite loudly so i'll have to keep an eye on that.

The drive home was quite painless really expect when i was playing with the cheap pop up sunroof and it nearly popped out on the A1(M)! Managed to get that back in thankfully, first thing you notice is how great that 5 cylinder KV lump sounds, my god it's addictive! If the exhaust manifold gasket wasn't knacked it would sound even nicer without that bloody ticking sound! Everything works even down to the one touch drivers window, the Blunkpunt stereo not so much, I think it's just been put in the hole as it's had a newer radio at some point.

The suspension is quite worn and rolly, it crashes over bumps a bit, i don't know why but it lapped up the miles faultlessly and in great comfort. A think a good service and antifreeze change will help wonders with the engine to be honest.

So after all that guff here's some photos.

It needs a good polish to get the paintwork back and a touch up and i don't know what to do with the door bottoms?.

The interior is very nice and clean and doesn't show it's 151000 miles at all.

It has some duo sound speaker system in the back, god knows what that does, i think it's for headphones.

These are the worse of the bodywork, i don't think it's anything major. The front wing is a bit rubbish, i hope i can flat back that edge and polish it up a bit better.

The engine bay needs a clean but it's nothing major, that exhaust manifold could be a sod and i don't know about the cambelt either.

Does anyone know what this is or does?. It was unplugged when i first saw the car so i plugged it back in and now it's makes a racket after you switch the car off, I think it's a fan of some kind and the bearings gone, does it need to be plugged in?.

And lastly every window, light unit and even the sunroof is etched with the registration.

Looks a nice car trigger. Gedling does have its surprises though! 're. Picture of rev counter and doing 70 at 3k. Was car in top? My Volvo sits around 3k at 70 and I thought it may have been high but if a larger capacity engine with manual box is the same I don't think it's bad or Do you find the engine higher revving?
