New Metrocab

Apologies if this has already been remarked upon and I missed it, but I spotted this on the Bristol site when looking at the link to the Tony Crook obituary posted by Des.

I thought Metrocab had gone down with Reliant but it seems that Bristol's parent company now owns the name and is putting a new hybrid version into production.

Rather prefer the look of the old one myself, but that's just me

I clicked, didn't read the words, assuming a new* Metrocab had been purchased.. the picture of the original loaded first, I thought "that's nice", then the new one loaded and took its place. I honestly recoiled away from my screen.

I've always thought London cabs should be electric.. surely an ideal candidate for zero emissions.. but by God, that new Metrocab is ugly!

It looks like a Japanese cartoon taxi.

With pound shop wheel trims.

I do like the concept of electric public transport, I've thought about a bus with the roof covered in solar panels.

Not sure that would work up here though.

I am more upset about Tony Crook...I didn't realise he had passed away.   What a gent that  man was.

The new Metrocab is a little 'challenging' to look at, and those pound land wheel trims are inexcusable. But it's really quite wonderful, especially when compared to those anonymous Mercedes boxes now assuming black cab duty. Click the link Wilko posted and get to know the thing, I'm hoping they're popular with drivers because I want to see more of this sort of thing on our streets:

I don't know why the one they're using for publicity is white, it's the least flattering colour.

Rather prefer the look of neither, I have to admit, which will probably attract some beating now.

However, I prefer the old one for a very trivial reason - grillerape. Most have post-facelift Granada MKII Ghia grilles and I just happen to need one.

For me, there is only one English Taxi of EVAH. This:

Everything else is just a wannabe and if I was the Führer, made illegal overnight, but that's just me.

Bad as the Metrocab looks, it is still better than the Nissan effort:

I know which one I'd rather hail if I was unlucky enough to be in London.

The NV200 is a soulless crock of shit and they're using them in New York too instead of proper car-based taxis. I'd say anything is welcome as long as it's made to be a taxi and not a converted van. In the perfect world I'd just keep making TX2s for as long as the FX4/Fairway was made, but hybrid.

As far as the Metrocab's concerned, I'd assume the comedy wheeltrims are a pre-production thing, and I have to say, it doesn't look that bad in black.

I quite like how the new Metrocab looks. It's quite funky and more cab like than the alternatives from MB and Nissan.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'd like to see a photo of one in black.

I think it's OK, but the design is cliche'd and it'll look horribly dated in a few years, just like 80's cars did in the 90's.

Why don't they just keep knocking out the old one?

Postman Pat was made redundant. Now drives a cab.....

Looks like a modern make over/hash up of a classic design similar to how they "improved" the Mini and Fiat 500. Over all it's not too bad.( Mind you I've not taken my tablets today!!).

I much prefer this one

I think an electric taxi is a great idea, hope it actually works as it's not exactly a stunnah to look at.

This made me ROFL, from their website:

"Frazer-Nash's advances in powertrain design continue to be incorporated into the new taxi"

From a company famous for their chain drive cars some 25 years after everyone else had given up on it
