What are the chances?

Why not? A bit of a nostalgic feeling? Maybe some good family memories, sentimental reason? I'll tell you this, I have no money, I'm skint, but if I saw any of the cars my parents had, particularly the 1987 Rover Sterling my Dad owned, or the mk3 Red Fiesta popular plus my Mum once owned, I would find the mone and space to keep them. Thats just my opinion though.

Mate, you've got to buy it, if a similar thing happened to me I'd justify it somehow.

Not only is it a sentimental purchase, it's shite now too.

I guarantee you that the 19 has not survived.

5's were made of sterner stuff.

I would buy it.

I'm having a similar situation myself at the moment. For that money I'd get it bought.

The other car I'm looking at is analogous to one I had, but sold off because of escalating money and storage problems. The former car didn't run and was in ropey condition. The latter car runs well, looks pretty good, and is being sold by a good friend of mine who happens to be the only marque specialist for that car in the UK. He's also offering me the car at a massive discount and on guaranteed buy back if I ever wanted to sell it.

Suits me. I need another car like a hole in the head but I already have three potential storage locations lined up.

The car looks a bit lop-sided when you see the back view of it.

Coincidence - yesterday I was behind a D reg 5 in a pale shade of red. 8)

Unbelievably it has too!! Dad sold the 19 when he gave up driving in 2002. It had 15k on the clock at the time and ever since 12k the autobox on it ( it was a fuel injected 1.7 TXE) had been jumping into safety mode completely at random. It was mint and the guy who bought it got a bargain, although he did spend close to 1200 quid on a new box at Renault.

Bet it's had about four more since then! Still on the road though with the same owner.

Do you fancy another Renault 11 too? There's a gold one in this weeks CCW up for £875ono, gold 1984 auto with only 2,000 miles on the clock! I'd rather someone else stopped me from buying it as I've got my eye on something else. The seller sent me some photos and I said I may know a few people who'd have it if I didn't :) A mate is also interested, but PM me if you'd like the seller's details and photos.

With such a story behind it how couldn't you??? I'd wouldn't think twice about buying it, I'd love to be reunited with a Renault from the family's past :)

My dad had a Land Rover (D107SWL) and if that ever came up for sale I'd buy that again. 8)

Just racking my brain here to see if I'd want any of my dad's old cars back and actually,,,,,NO. They were all pretty clapped out by the time he was finished with them...I would take all of my old cars back in the morning if I could afford them, but I suppose that was the whole point of selling them in the first place. :(

What I did have one time was a Nissan Sunny ZX Coupe and I loved it. It was the first semi-sporty car that I had . My attention span on cars is fairly short but I kept that car 3 years.Loved it..Now I know that these were voted one of the most ugly cars ever, but so was the Fuego

Car now sold - not surprised at that bin price. Bit sad I suppose but it wouldn't have been as I remembered it - it had only covered about 3k when he traded it in and I'd done quite a few of those. It seemed like a really classy car back then and was the reason I eventually ran several as everyday cars. The Auto and the Monaco I've now got are really like new - they even smell like new inside - I'm happy enough with them, but it'll make his day knowing his 5 is still alive - hopefully it still will be after the MOT daedline :|

Mum and Dad's old Ford Escort 1.3 L by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr

My parent's owned this from about 1991-95 before trading it in for another Escort, A coupe of years ago whilst visiting some friends i saw this parked in a neighbours of there's driveway, the rear door was dented in and it had a tow bar fitted but it still looked ok, I kept meaning to try and get a photo of it but forgot, then 18 months ago it disappeared and vanished of the DVLA database and a new Kia appeared in the driveway, R.I.P F289 RYL. :(

Depressingly, not one of my Dad's old motors has survived (well, certainly not ones owned before I left home). Ignoring the really old stuff, the Renault 9 Broadway he owned in the late 1980s was scrapped in 1996, the Nissan Bluebird (brand new!) 1.6LS that replaced it was stolen and burn out while he owned it. There was a job change and he owned an F-Reg facelift Montego 1.6L estate. That was 'liable' in 2006. A change of job and a Montego 1.6L estate (pre-facelift) in Lynx Bronze (rare) that I drove after passing my test. Has been 'liable' since 2001. Had a better stereo that the post-facelift Monty...

That was usurped by a J-reg Sierra 1.8LX. Really nice car and occasionally I got to drive it. Also 'liable' since 2006.

All this meaningless wittering suggests that the chances are not very high at all!

My dads last ever car is still alive in the village next to the one I live in, but it has only been taxed for six months, until the start of March next year, which is a bit worrying, I may have to go and enquire... is it a good idea?

The Legacy it replaced only lasted until 2004, no doubt rusted away in the Highlands. The Sierra, which no one remembers the numberplate of, probably did no better than 2000, we did see it on the odd occasion for a few years when we visited my Gran, but it did vanish rather quickly.

The day dad ordered this 5, we passed the S reg 16 TL he'd bought in back 1980 - I remember we were amazed it was still going and looked so clean. Sadly, according to the DVLA, CDM 236 S was dead a few months later

Hey Richard, isn't it about time we had an North West old Renault owners rendezvous?

Anyway as far as the R5 goes I'm a bit of the opinion that you can't go back with these things - unless you know its been really well looked after, the fact that its not how you remember it will probably just spoil things.

Also, I'll just leave this here...

1. Yes - absolutely.

2. That's what I thought.

3. That's a lot of money for a model of an 18 - however, bring one over when you come to visit!!
