A bit more, including some pretty amazing pre-war stuff... Capri 2300. This was someone's car under Communism - not too bad for a dictatorship! Petrol queue in 1990. This was almost exclusively dacia, although you can see a Beemer and a Volvo - either belinging to a local bigwig or immediately brought over after the fall of Ceausescu Skoda I have no idea - Adler perhaps? Or something american? Chevrolet I think but again not sure Merc 170V Crumbling Barkas Trio of turd: Opel Olympia, Mercedes with home-made doors and a buggered roof, and a never Merc Ponton with a termina rust issue... Even in Romania things very rarely quite come as bad as this! Junkman 1

nigel bickle Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I well remember those Romanian fuel queues, pre-the 'revolution'.As a Westerner- I had to prepay (western currency -ridiculous exchange rate) for fuel coupons -min 20litres. Fine-except that the BMW m/cycle I was touring on (K100rs-still got it!) tank is 20 litres. So each fuel stop meant an overflowing tank all over a hot engine-extinquisher to hand. Not allowed to stop till they had dispensed 20 litres-whatever. Madness. Only 2 minor fires...still bears the scars!..Never had to join those queues though-always got waved straight to the front-cos the bike itself caused a crowd! Strange times.

Even old Dacias have become unusual - and the ARo, TV and Oltcit models are now rare. Nevertheless, a few highlights: Volvo Judging by the plate, an 85 Kadett Dacia with identity crisis Honey of an 18 Jacked up Golf Very battered Dacia, 1981 vintage Seventies Dacias Megarare Oltcit pickup Early Dacia in very good condition This is special - Dacia made in the late 80s for the Party elite. Note the Oltcit headlights. Warszawa Visa Two Dacias and a hot Escort Dacia prototype Yank stuff Orange! Step back to 2011 and a quiet fishing town apart from the mainland has about 25 cars. The only way of getting there is by boat (except for a practically inaccessible dirt track) so cars tend to be pretty battered - and when they do break down, abandoned. Carts are often the best way of getting around Old Audi Baby transport! Abandoned 1100 If you were choosing a car for inhospitable terrain, would it be a CX? Or simply a very buggered Dacia? I won't speculate as to their histories. The driving standards i witnessed are probably best described as "suicidal".

Most interesting older stuff has now gone from the capital - still plenty about in the provinces and the poorer suburbs, though. The older Dacias (of which the white one is a very clean and early example) have now become rare, TVs practically extinct and I barely saw an ARO. The Seventies and Eighties Eurocrud has also by and large been scrapped. What's the grey 70s car? Couldn't get a proper photo owing to the "neighbours"... Alexg and RedSparrow 2

Hey I heard a thing on the radio a few weeks back about some bloke who has a cafe in Bucharest, he was a sports journalist (i think) during the Ceaucescu days and he used his press pass to 'allow' him to take loads of photos around Bucharest while they were tearing the place down to build the massive palace and other shiz. Seemingly such photos are super rare as it was generally NOT ALLOWED to take photos of folk being made homeless and their homes & other nice old buildings being demolished while they watched, etc. But now he's got all his photos up round the cafe and you can go and check them out and see how it was back in the day. Do you know this place?

Just about the rarest Mk2 Golf there is it's a Syncro, not produced in that high a volume and designed to be an all-road vehicle. Probably very well suited to Romania's landscape but it is surprising to see one out in the wild. The few that do exist now aren't so well known even within the VW scene. If you were going to buy a premium shite Mk2 Golf, this is the one to buy, because hardly anyone will have a clue what it is, or that it came from the factory like that.
