I've just done a quick search and there only appears to be a handful of mentions on here of the new MG6 so I thought I'd ask your opinions on, what I'm guessing to be future Britishish shite - in a good way, as I do really like it! "Designed and manufactured" in Longbridge, Birmingham, to me it looks like a PROPER car - with a coupe-tastic fastback like they used to make them! :D

So what are your thoughts? I've added a poll so vote now!!

It's okay. Wouldn't want to own one, though.

Does nothing for me either. Just another bland probably reasonably competent new car. It doesn't say 'MG' to me at all, you could stick any otherr badge on it and it would happily pass for a new Proton / Kia / Chinese offering / etc

"Designed and manufactured in Longbridge"? :?

"90% built in China, then shipped to a tin shed near Cofton Park to have its badges nailed on", more like...!:mrgreen:

Quite like it. Front and sides are nice and swoopy, but the back looks very Nissan-ish and not quite as nice. I expect any they sell will mostly end up as company cars by sadistic bastards who don't like their bosses.

Posted

im not keen on the appearence

it looks just like all the other bland new cars

what about performance figures?

Remember that Polo saloon a few years back that was a small Seat with a VWish front end? To me this looks like a similar attempt using a Golf front on a Octavia (for deranged peeps who would like a X6 or a 5 series GT but can't afford one).

I saw one of these new Chinese MG's in Ludlow a few months back, that'l teach me for not having a camera on my phone.

I quite like it, but the colour in the OP is not doing it any favours. The interior looks quite low rent also.

I really want it to do well, I saw the ad on TV the other night and felt a strange sense of pride - just nice to see the name back in the limelight.

I guess there will be quite a few MG types snapping these up regardless of their looks or capabilities.

Good luck MG

Meh. It's ok.

As others say it realy does look like it's from the far east, very bland styling. The interior looks shit too, especially the steering wheel.

That said I imagine they will de-value incredibly quickly so might give one a whirl one day.

I hope it provides some work for a few people in Longbridge, but I can't see this being a massive success to be honest.

Regardless of what the adverts say, it's Chinese to me…

I did see a test one (in black) in the flesh and my first reaction was "meh…". Not as distinctive as it's made out to be and not a pretty thing from the rear. I also thought 'Proton' at first, too.

What's happened to the 'Rover' name? :? The MG6 is no 'MG'. I thought MG's were for Rover's sporty/go-faster models? The MG6 isn't either. To me, the Chinese don't 'get' it. It's like putting Ford's 'RS' badge on a 1.6 Focus or Vauxhall putting it's 'VXR' badge on a 1.6 Astra e.t.c...

I don’t 'hate' it and for the sake of British jobs I hope it sells okay, but I'm not a fan of it, sorry.

If Amstrad had designed the Insignia it'd look like the MG6.

Definate Futureshite. Especially if they're gonna spit head gaskets like a cowboy spits tobacco.

I take it they're not gonna make a V8 RWD job. Shame that, as the ZT260 is the only MG since the Magnette I'd consider owning.

Another miss for MG, I reckon.

What's happened to the 'Rover' name? :?

Now owned by Ford I think. The Chinese didn't get the rights to the Rover name as part of the deal.

Posted

Bought by Ford and then passed on with the Land-Rover/Jaguar sale to some Indian firm.

IMHO, with the right marketing they could bring back the Rover name as a Mondeo class challenger, cheaper than the Jags but using the same platform.... unlikely though.

And BMW still own the Morris name, hence why now MG stands for 'Modern Gentleman'. The Chinese really need some marketing help!

Posted

Wasn't it Tata that bought Jag?

For 'other reasons' I hope the Indians are good to work for.

It's sort of okayish. It needs to be £7995 with a million year warranty to compete with Kia/Hundie, otherwise it doesn't stand a chance.

If Saab couldn't make it, neither can this lot. I'm waiting for the Vietnamese to buy the Hillman name and launch the Supa Minks, a 90% Vietnamese built Kia reject assembled from CKD kits on a tin hut on the wasteground at Ryton.

I like its arse. It reminds of something I like but cant place it.

Front does look like a VW IMO. Dont exepct to see many on the road though if I am completely honest. Most of the people who it is aimed at will be too scared to buy it after the previous debarkle and will buy a Kia instead I reckon.

Reminds me of the hatchback Imprezzza. Quite like it, even in tomato soup bronze. Both ends remind me a bit of the recent fat Civic. Only thing I dislike is the VAG style lower grille on the front.

No idea what the interior actually looks like from that picture. All it tells me is that it has a similar, probably glued-on shroud across the instruments like my Impian (which on my car has sagged slightly and I'm fucked if I can find any fixings, so assume it's just stuck on), and the sat nav screen (?) looks like they've cut a hole and glued a tomtom behind it or something to fill a gap and tick a box.

Its quite nice looking imho but just another identikit car.

Do they still make the Rover 75 (or MG version) in China?

Wouldn't mind seeing that for sale over here again!

Yup.

It's back in September, apparently. Which explains why I've not seen any.

MG is promising an end to the head gasket failures that plagued earlier models

I watched the advert, am I the only one who thought it looked absolutely huge when he passed and waved at the sherpa convertable driver?

Yeah: http://www.aronline.co.uk/sac528indexf.htm

Doubt it'll make it over to the UK though.

Just seen the most basic MG6 is £15,495. I predict epic fail unfortunately.

Have a look: http://www.mg.co.uk/the-models/mg6-gt.aspx#/?page=PRICING_MG6

Shit, not shite. The residuals are likely to be crippling and i bet the shite quality interior falls apart in no time. I sat in one and pulled the window switches out of the door just doing a window up.

Horrible.

Holy fuck. I bet you would Mr Nanjing.

Posted

I don't like it, purely due to the unimaginative design, it looks the same as everything else on the market at the moment.

I think there's a bit of Toyota Prius and new Mondeo in the styling, and something else I can't put my finger on, Honda maybe?

Posted

I'm not that fussed. Too new. Could well be futureshite though.

The poll doesn't seem to have a "generally ambivalent" option.

Posted

it looks like a vw front and a nissan arse end filled with cheap chinese plastic in the middle :?

its total shite...imho and i dont mean shite as in autoshite
