My big fat pikey towcar

Can someone tell me of any large automatics capable of pulling a caravan that weighs over a tonne? I'm thinking of getting another cheap caravan for the summer and I my W124 is only rated to 1000kg. What can a Shogun/Wanker import tow without cooking its box?

Any info on max gross and train weights would be appreciated. It's hard to plead ignorance at a VOSA checkpoint with C + C+E categories on your licence 'cos I should know better.

what model is yur w124? the towing weights are higher than that i'm sure.

I looked in the owners manual and it's a bit restricted due to the autobox. If it was a manual I think it could tow about 1500kgs.

Isuzu Trooper 3.1D. I towed a Saviem tipper back from Gloucestershire with mine - total trailer weight was 3.5T, and the Trooper never missed a beat. Not the most economical of vehicles though.

Not what you asked for though surely would be perfect no?

I've just spluffed me custard!

gorgeous - a pre Sherpa Leyland van....just like mine without the camper conversion...I'd trade all my shite for a new white A4 Tdi with wanky led lights for a mint 1974 one - or even a pile of new 1974 parts

tow car wise remember this.....

Shoguns tow horesboxes

Pajeros tow Chip vans

A few Bighorns on the bay just now

but I would buy this.......

a MINT v6 Mk1 Shogun with all the trimmings for under 700 quid!!!!!

If this was for sale 100 miles from here it would be outside my house tomorrow but it would cost me too much to collect it and drive it back

ACE SHERPA PIC!

May I poach it for the Flickr Sherpa perv group?

Go right ahead. Easy to say since I poached it from photobucket with leyland sherpa after sherpa alone brought up a whole bunch of useless crap.

*edit  bighorn, sniggers.

Fuck me vicar, what kind of caravan weighs that much? You're not getting some cut glass mirrored twat palace on wheels are you?

I should think that a 124 would be able to tow all but the very biggest caravans - I saw a piddly 1.6lt Kia towing a 4 bearther today

A fairly average four berth caravan is over 1500kg nowadays. Even our 20 year old shitter is nearly 1300kgs.

Citroen C8 - rated at 1850kgs :D

Yup - I have a 6 year old Bailey Pageant, weighs in at 1350kgs unladen, has another 200kgs payload (in reality stretch that to about 300 or 400kgs with both awnings, 2x 19kg gas cylinders, kids bikes and other associated shit you have to cart around with you).

I'd never seen a caravan towing a car before on the M90 as well! :D

All 124's according to the handbook can tow a maximum of 1500kg, and all the auto's have a fluid cooler. I can't see it being a problem? I towed a huge double axle trailer with various motors with my 200E with no issues, and my uncle pulled a huge double axle Burstner all over Germany with his 250D.Also hauled my big Adria all over the Uk with a C200. Was a better towcar than my shogun!

I think the Heep's towbar is rated to 3500kg. I've pulled a couple of tons with it (Pug on big homemade trailer) and it did pretty well.

Not the most fuel efficient thing on earth, but on LPG it's not too painful.

Renault 5.

I'd have thought your W124 was up to it too, but if not, Petes HEEP seems a decent bet, 'specially with LPG.

Ive always had a soft spot for early 90's Patrols myself, certainly man enough to tow pretty much owt. Fuel economy is abysmal though...

And there's me thinking you were all talking about Fiat 124's. Seeing as mines an estate- i reckon an easy 2 tons behind the 1200cc mota.

I'll get to fitting the towbar then -shall I?

Heaps of Shogunz on the bay at the moment...I would advise a Shogun over a Pajero and I would also advise on a pre 1995 V6 - the engine is the legendary Mitsu v6 - later ones are a b9it weaker - you might want to check that date though- it could be earlier. No point in a diesel - until the late 90's they were nasty underpowerd and very gutsy and with the cost of oil just now the V6 is a more efficiant car on the pocket and also, because most chip van drivers don't know this - they tend to be cheaper
