Excellent stuff.

Did this car used to go to the Classic Car night at the Ace Cafe circa 2007? I seem to remember it, can't believe there's two red A reg 604's about!

Quite possibly. The chap I bought it from has a house in London, and he took it to a Peugeot owners meeting in France at some point, so a meet at the Ace wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I spoke to him today (he's got a load of spares for it in London) and he's visited Autoshite in the past. Seemed a bit miffed that the 604 would be featured in 'ere, until I explained that to be on 'ere a car doesn't have to actually be shite. Just a bit unloved by the masses.

So, Mel, if you're reading this, come on in! Anyone who owned a 604 for 25+ years is bound to be welcome!

I love the 604 and would like to own one at some point. They have the perfect mix of styling and nostalgia since my dad had a couple of big Peugeots in the mid/late 1970s and I associate them with him.

The photos are good too. What makes you say it is painted a Jaguar colour? Peugeot offered a colour very like this and it was popular on the 604.

My dad ran a Peugeot dealership in the early '80s so I remember these cars when they were new, he had a couple of 604s before he went to work for them. They were Ti jobs, but he had a diesel one for a while which he hated. Then again, going from an XJ12 to 80 bhp of Indenor throbber would put anyone but the tightest of people off. He was impressed by the economy but not enough to give up a V6 for one. I remember a trip up the M62 at 40 mph because that was about the only speed the engine was remotely smooth in the diesel one.

As for the colour, it was originally that very pale light metallic green (still is around the strut tops), I think the Jag red really suits it.

I think it's an XJ40 colour, shame it's not Flamenco like the XJR.

I've had a look through my photos and haven't found it. Not that I shoot every car at every month's meet.

Great work, I love these.

Look forward to running reports.

As Mr M.Mad has subtly hinted, we took a trip to The Barn Of Shite this afternoon so I could have another inspection of the 604 in daylight and work out just how much work lies ahead. Figured Mark would like a trip up there - he seems to like TBOS - so picked him up on the way.

As I was there, I figured it'd be rude not to give it a quick shakedown run on TBOS private top secret test track.

Photographic evidence courtesy of spy photographer Dr. Hans Yehmann to follow.

So, we rolled up in the Jag. Need to order a wheelstud and nut for the Heep.

The 604 slumbering next to the Watanabe Dutch Wheels Of Choice.

After a few clicks of the ignition and an initial wander around, the fuel pump relay kicked into action and it started so it was left to run for a few minutes.

The 2664cc lump.

165672_10150092869309644_804084643_5887458_4556904_n.jpg

No pools of deathly fluids underneath after running for a few minutes.

168612_10150092869639644_804084643_5887463_6680670_n.jpg

Time to move it to a more suitable spec for inspection.

165608_10150092870094644_804084643_5887476_5379639_n.jpg

There's a bit of bodywork needed.

168716_10150092870159644_804084643_5887477_4561159_n.jpg

Not all of it cosmetic. There's quite a bit of weldage needed too.

179196_10150092870224644_804084643_5887478_154152_n.jpg

Arches aren't bad though, this thing is saveable.

168408_10150092870294644_804084643_5887479_1647360_n.jpg

The sill covers are off at the moment, makes it a lot easier to see the extent of the rot.

180720_10150092870369644_804084643_5887481_2976233_n.jpg

The n/s/r door needs a bit of work on the skin, but the frame is good.

164804_10150092870444644_804084643_5887483_5723162_n.jpg

Bit of welding needed at the front end of the n/s sill as well as a bit on the floor.

180392_10150092870484644_804084643_5887484_2317095_n.jpg

Oh, and there's a bloody great gaping hole in the n/s/r wheelarch.

168044_10150092870569644_804084643_5887485_1478764_n.jpg

I don't think this is as bad as it looks.

168476_10150092870614644_804084643_5887487_4969144_n.jpg

O/S front floorpan needs some work, and the sill will need reconstructing.

168708_10150092870694644_804084643_5887488_4440045_n.jpg

Amazing what a shiny paintjob will hide. This won't be bad to sort.

164380_10150092870749644_804084643_5887489_339341_n.jpg

O/S sill.

164736_10150092870809644_804084643_5887490_3061795_n.jpg

O/S/R suspension mounting looks to be fine, but the sill ain't good at the rear end.

167016_10150092870889644_804084643_5887491_5380222_n.jpg

O/S/F door skin is a bit shagged in the corner. Could be a pig to plate.

168428_10150092870974644_804084643_5887493_312341_n.jpg

Welcome to Bogville. O/S/R arch has obviously seen a bit of P38 in its time, but weirdly the arch looks to be mainly metal. Maybe the bog has been used to hide a dent, but it ain't pretty. Probably just rot though.

167780_10150092871039644_804084643_5887495_6208565_n.jpg

180448_10150092871184644_804084643_5887496_3436139_n.jpg

Bit of rot around the fuel flap.

180360_10150092871244644_804084643_5887497_615924_n.jpg

Wat's photo of the car on the trailer alerted me to this bit near the back light. Maybe an easy repair with the light out.

164828_10150092871299644_804084643_5887498_2236310_n.jpg

Few bits of untidyness around the screens. This will make DNJ feel a bit better.

179492_10150092871344644_804084643_5887499_5241355_n.jpg

Paint flaking from o/s/f door. Bad preparation and sitting outside in winter does this...

180712_10150092871384644_804084643_5887500_1169139_n.jpg

Looks fine with the sill covers placed back on though.

180696_10150092871439644_804084643_5887501_7564325_n.jpg

Apart from that bloody doorskin.

167520_10150092871489644_804084643_5887502_1851694_n.jpg

Front valance would be an easy repair. Fortunately, there's a brand new one in the car, and they bolt on.

180748_10150092871629644_804084643_5887504_5968572_n.jpg

It does need a bloody good valet.

Heh, doesn't look too pretty when it's all close up shots of rot, but after its trip to the welders an MOT and Chodmongley are still within reach.

Febuary, March, April and most of May to sort the bloody thing. It'll quite probably take that long.

How could he doubt you, Pete?

That Escrot in Czech was restored in almost no time at all, errr...

What odds will you give me, Warren?

Heh, the Escort in Czech is still exactly as it was. Mainly because I've not been over there to influence things. The blokes who weld the 604 up are a 20 minute drive from here, and speak English.

Posted

:( No video ..... was it shit quality Pete ?

The 604 looks quite scary, but it's no more than a month and a half maybe two months of welding at most (Depending on how many hours a day you spend on it an all that) .... But it'll be great to see it rocking up Chumly.

It'll make the 309 look like a match-box :D

Please can I have whatever valance ends up not on the car?

Mine is totally rotten.

No worries, Phil. I think it'd be rude to not get the two 604s together at some point anyway!

Great job Pete..On holiday in Sydney 1978 when i was 11..Father pulled up at a Peugeot showroom with a 604 in the window and admiringly said..Now that is a car -[we were in a lite poo-colored Corolla]... i think the price tag was about $65000...ive always liked them..good on ya mate

Posted

Nyarrgh. It's a 2.7 'oddfire' rather than the 2.85 I somehow thought it was (The bloke in the garage said it was a 2.8).

I think it's time to find the bits to mate it's ZF4HP22 to a Rover V8.

You think? It seems to go well enough, and this one has the late twin exhaust setup which quite probably makes it sound even weirder.

It just seems custom built for dropping a V8 in. Just need to find a Sherpa V8 auto bellhousing....

Posted
Are the Sherpa bellhousings different to Range Rover ones?

Some of them will be, I think Pete wants to be able to bolt the V8 to the Peugeot 'box.

If it goes well and sounds nice why change it?

Fit a 2.5 Peugeot TD engine out of an LDV 400 van. Keep it in the family!

That's a bit opulent, it needs an Indenor 2.1D really.

Posted
It's a ZF box not a Pug one.

It's the same auto box that was fitted to Range Rover Classics

A ZF4HP22 is the same box as in a Rangie Classic, BMW 5 series, and a few other big things.

The Rangie Classic has a big lump for the the starter that is quite often in the wrong place, but the Aussies and a few others have fitted Rover V8s to 504s and they seem to go rather bloody well.
