There's a couple of others I need to sort out.

All retro-riders are equal, but some are more equal than others...

Is that where cars go to die? Can't see anything useful happening in there.... Perhaps it's me.

Define.

Always one for controversy, me.

I realise the whole RR \ Area 52 issue was always going to be contentious on here, but MM5 needed the parts and there was plenty of wheeled chod about. Hence the pictures. You no like pictures, I stop.

FWIW, there was a very strange vibe about the place, and MM5 agreed with me. Had overtones of a religious cult in places.

What is the story behind Area 52 anyway? Cultists or not, I rate them highly for keeping a pair of dusty Hustlers.

I can tell you the story but you have to help me out regarding your previous comment.

Yo Wat, what's the car in the first shot? Imp?

It's a Singer Chamois with various bits of Imp attached to it. They must have been cheaper or something.

I wasn't having a go, I find your shots quite interesting.

Oh, OK, sorry. I find it difficult to tell with you sometimes, no offence intended.

Area 52 is a collective of people from the South West section of Retro Rides. A while ago one of the members (Mystery Machine) began renting the unit and his mates ended up storing their cars there \ chipping in \ bringing them down to work on. The whole thing went from there and off the back the forum chatter they managed to get a feature in Retro Cars. I think it was more a case of who they knew if I'm honest, but they hold various 'come one, come all' events called 'Playdays' where people's cars get worked on and they dick about building things out of scrap. They've built a couple of random projects specifically for shows such as 'Project X' which mated the plastic bodyshell of an electric Peg Perago children's jeep to a scratchbuilt offroad quad frame. They also have a blog somewhere which MM runs. He's the owner of the two Hustlers, the larger of the two being a six wheeler. He also has a UVA Fugitive sandrail and a lifted Mitsubishi Delica.

It seems pretty popular down there. I've tried to be as neutral as I can about the whole thing. I've not been wronged by MM \ anyone else there, but I realise that people do dislike the whole shebang because of their strong ties with Retro Rides management. Other comments will no doubt follow. I'm ambivalent about the whole thing but I want to avoid the cult of personality that pervades RR sometimes.

I wasn't dissin' the pics, I was questioning the erm..."abilities" of the curators of the place. Seems a bit odd that's all.

I thought it was something to do with Mystery Machine but couldn't remember.

He comes across as one of these people who's a a bit, nay, far too enthusiastic. People like that are usually wrong'uns.

Well summarised.

I tried to sum that up several times, but it came out all sweary, vindictive and nasty, so I gave up.

Nice pics, seems like a nice little set up down there, there has to be somewhere around here that has a sizeable workshop thing.

Did you get the old needle scratching over the record and silence when you walked in? :D

Whoever has the commitment to fund the place - which can't be at all cheap - has to be VERY enthusiastic about it though.

I like the idea of the place, though all I know of it is what is posted on RR it seems to be a positive thing to do although I guess it could be a bit cliquey maybe.

I wonder what the Autoshite equivalent would be? Piece of rough ground surrounded by tatty fencing with a load of rotten Allegros, Talbot Horizons, Skoda Estelles and the like kicking about. I'd certainly like to think so :D

Be good if there was. I suppose there would be really, its just a case of funding the place which as I say, can't be cheap.

I know of a place EXTREMELY similar to that, has all sorts of mystery cars in there. I know what's there, but it's a secret location, so I COULD tell you, but I'd have to kill you all.

I think there's must be a few people paying for it, the Mystery Machine bloke told me he's a primary school teacher or something.

bruce has just had a begging for scrap weekend - then he weighed in to pay the rent and bills

too many freeloaders, not enough paying jobs - how long can that situation continue?

i maybe should also point out that IMO booze, cars and garage tools dont mix

Seems a little harsh ? I dislike the whole RR in-crowd thing too I don't see any harm in what they do ?

I wish there was something like that round here! I believe my Maestro spent some time at Area 52, judging by all the stickers I had to remove and the chopped springs i'm currently half way through replacing. Fair play, like minded individuals all working together to have some automotive fun.

I agree with the comment on booze and cars e.t.c not mixing. When I rented a yard with a couple of mates we had to be very selective on who knew about or visited the yard to avoid stuff getting stolen, burnt or people killed e.t.c.

At least not in that order

Good on them I say for having a bit of fun arsing around with their old motors. I must say I wouldnt invite any old tom dick or harry down to my workshop though for fear of it getting 'done over' not long afterwards, I suspect that would be inevitable at some point sadly.

I'm one of Area 52's 'authorised personnel' and I have to say all the negativity surrounding it is a bit harsh.

A52 is basically a real-life forum, when people can speak face-to-face, and share knowledge/ skills and enjoy old cars.

Most people who are derogatory about it are just jealous because they haven't been invited

And trust me, the power tools are put away long before the beer starts flowing.

I realy don't understand why there should be any rivalry between AS and RR.

I must say though that if I owned that place I would turn into a paranoid Tony Martin type character.

Crikey - live and let live eh? Wat's posted some pictures up of car enthusiasts having fun. I've not really met any of this crowd but they seem really friendly and very enthusiastic.

I think a Dyane has been fettled there recently, which pleases me greatly.
