Cavalier (and others) Question. Help needed.

That's the older type GM engine (not to be confused with the later 'low blow' types as fitted to some Astras) and they are as reliable as the day is long.

Not exactly earth shattering performance but will plod around forever and a day.

Later Isuzu engines are better as more reliable and quicker.

This wants buying whatever happens as they must be bloody rare now.

Looks like a n/a non-Isuzu job. My 1300 fully loaded with the roofrack on would be quicker.

It looks like a tidy and cared for car but am I better looking for a Isuzu engined one?

Reliability wise there's not much in it. Power wise they're streets apart.

*Just read M'coli's post properly. Soz like

I don't think it's the Isuzu lump! :) It's got the classic Vauxhall camcover shape.

Posted

Are any of these engines to be avoided at all costs?

Posted

No.

As said reliable and cheap to run, Isuzu faster though.

Proper shite spec that, but well cared for by the look of it. Bull-buggeringly slow with whatever remains of the original 57BHP. Possibly GR8 4 veg oil, as some have Bosch pumps IIRC.

Posted

Aye, I think the Isuzu donkey is around the low 80s.

Posted

Yep, That's the same old lump that was in the old Astra's as well, They were never very quick or refined in the Astra so can't be much cop in a Cavailer although it's only £350 and look pretty tidy.

My mate had a M plate 1.7TD Cav for years, It only cost him £500 and he went everywhere in it, He sold it recently to his dad who now uses to drive to and from Scotland and it's never missed a beat.

Definitely not the Isuzu engine in that, not necessarily a bad thing though,

I used to have an L reg astra estate 1.7 non turbo as a taxi and whilst it was no ball of fire it was dead reliable and never used much oil or water, a bloke on the same firm had a cav with the Isuzu lump and spares were horrendously expensive for that, seem to recall it being scrapped at an early age while the astra is probably still pottering about somewhere.

Where has all the decent shite gone to? Went to have a look at this.....

Peugeot 205 1.9l Gld Diesel

£500

65 mpg very economical, love this car have to sell due to working overseas. Fully serviced complete history, only 2 female owners since new. Mot till nov.....has tow bar with electrics and flip front cd player.

And didn't even bother getting out of the car to look at it. Rusty door bottoms, rotted exhaust and a plywood rear window. No way would she of been happy to of had my offer of £150. And to be honest she would have to have great tits to make me want to offer that much. I know a good 205 dizzler is worth £500 but this was far too tatty for me to consider as a bit of a project.

There was a red L reg 205 Maris Gras Diesel for sale down my road the other morning for £200, It looked pretty tidy as well, It was gone a few hours later.

Somebody please save me from a Nissan Almera or a Hyundai Accent!

Theres an 04 reg accent in the local rag, 38.000 miles loads of T&T,

£1250 ono, could pass on contact details if you want Warren

Not sure the Cav would be that bad - my BX only has 60 or 65bhp (not quite sure which!) and is brisk enough once wound up. You soon learn not to bother extending the engine and just keep it in the torque zone. In fact, I prefer it to the Pug 306 TD I had as there's no Turbo to try and keep spooled up.

I'm pretty sure he'll have been offered less for it,

What would Mike Brewer do??????

Posted

It'll have a diesel engine, and should therefore be shunned.

Heads up! This is prompting me to take a trip to Formby tomorrow.

1.8 with the Arthur Askey gearbox. Probably no ball of fire but it should be ok on fuel. If it turns out to be bollocks I know of an Audi dizzler for sale nearby.

What's the 1.8 Merc engine like? Belt or chain driven?

Posted

What a hopelessly wank description, he doesn't deserve any bids to be honest.

It'll be a right slug with that engine/box combo but should be very reliable. 2.0s are chain, seem to recall the 1.8s were too.

Parts are well cheap and what not but could you live with that interior?

Probably go down the caff and eat London's supply of fry-ups?

A blue dashboard is a bit of a drawback. It does seem a tidy example though. Did you ever get your 190 back on the road and sold?

Don't be daft, it's still sitting in my garage!

I did look at it today as I opened the door to get my spare jump leads out though.

I just never seem to get round to pulling the fuel pump off and ordering a new one.

I had a 1.6 SPi Cavalier, and it was slow, but never noticed. It had those big velour seats and was pleasurable to drive. 60bhp won't bother you, they cruise quite well and effortlessly. I can't think of a better, more comfier car than mk3 Cav for practicality and reliability. It's got that grey grille, which are quite rare now.

I think If I buy it I will fit a later model grille for the Double Griffin look.
