Shite you admired in TV and Films

I have thought about why I like cars so much quite a lot and TV though maybe not the main influence has had an influence on me. Minder was always a program which I liked, especially Arfurs  “Jag’s” also Give us a break and other programs where an XJ6 was the star.

I loved the Consul in the Sweeney and also the line of replacement Granada’s but the Cortina back up cars were always my favourites.

The Professionals were more my era and although the Capri’s are mostly recognised as the stars of the show even as a child it was Cowley’s Granada or the regular back up Cortina’s that I got most excited seeing. Yes, I may be odd but I don’t care.

On a related note, Ray's car from Due South. Watched this in the 90s when tjw kids were growing up. Whike the car is quitw distinctive, totally upstaged by both Diefenbaker, and Lesllie Nielsen.

Arfur had a variety of Mercs, from W123s up, also a Granada mk2 and a Silver Shadow, but always came back to Jaguar, usually silver.

So what cars did you see on TV that you fell in love with and wanted to own one day.

is it considered cheating if you *do* actually own *the* car? :)

Arthur Daley only once had a Merc, a W123, NLM 76V. He drives this for about 5 episodes.  He also drove an SD1 for two episode claiming he was trying it out. On two seperate occasions, Arthur very briefly switched to Granadas, one where he faked his own death and one where he had financial problems.

Arthur also had a Rolls Royce. In one episode it was a drop head Coupe Corniche and in a special episode, he had a beige Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

There were W126 S-Classes but these were mainly used/driven by others characters such as rival businessman/gangsters.

In later episodes (The 'Ray Daley' 90s series) Arthur mainly drove either XJ40s or S3 Daimlers.

The black Mk5 EST is a bitza being a MK4 with Mk5 wings/grille, seats & mirrors, the red T reg GLS saloon is a pre-production car regd in July 79 along with approx 1/2 dozen others   ( production didn't start til August , launched in October)  also used for brochure/poster etc adverting work.

They were lent to the production team who were filming in the second half of 79 with the series airing during Christmas week.

Thus giving ford free primetime advertising through the start of 1980. Surprisingly the cars were sold on lasting the usual 10ish years. Usually these sort of vehicles were scrapped after short but hard lives.

I think The Italian Job was my go to film for automotive inspiration

Italian-Job_The-web.jpg.4ef281c9e2c6f08613336151a33219ff.jpg

I have had two Minii, coincidentally a red one and a blue one, both dreadful but lots of fun to drive.

I needn't elaborate on the Land-Rover 109 station wagon, but I loved that the film makers opted to keep in the distinctive squeal of the drum brakes in this scene during the gold van ambush.

OIP.webp.084d3d2d5aaae43b1daf047b62d47bbd.webp

There are loads of sports cars in the film but none cooler than the FIAT Dino coupe that the Mafia boss drives. Obviously I will never own one of these, even if I was in a position to drop 50-70 large on a car I'd look like a prat driving it.

Another vote for the MkI Granny.

If I cant have a Mad Max interceptor, then a Bandit Trans Am would be nice.
