Picked this up this morning, and unsure what road to go down with it.Really up to the lad,but feel responsible anyway.Quite a tidy old thing, sills all seem ok,but clutch seems to be slipping, with revs rising faster than the speedometer.Got a bit of time to decide whether to get rid,as we will be waiting for V5C.The previous owner probably never noticed,he'd used it very little since last year and it's quite driveable.Son's over in Telford at the moment and off back to Germany on the 3rd.Was quite surprised to find it's only got five gears.Anyway......IMG_20241229_161937402.jpg.91fbf944868b0251220d5288703b84d2.jpgIMG_20241229_161950841.jpg.64016e4aa241ece55bb430432fced0ce.jpgIMG_20241229_162019638.jpg.1b135b23946894db019981c11b4e5917.jpgIMG_20241229_162030321.jpg.1980291385fac4d09a142d59bcc0e56b.jpgIMG_20241229_162128984.jpg.d88eda0f4fa5f26bba5b4e227707ca0c.jpg

Clutches used to be a gamble on these. There's a captive nut which is pivotable to dropping the front subframe  to change the clutch and they are notorious for the captive nut failing, resulting in going through the floor in the front passenger foot well to access it.

Don't know these but;

Sticky clutch from lack of use or mechanism/hydraulics not quite right or something catching and peddle not coming back properly.

If you are not keeping it I'd rag it up a piece of quiet road stamping the clutch on and off - it might be disuse?

Looks well cared for.

That does look rather nice, good mot history as well, one random if you decide to raffle it.

Is it a diesel one?  If so then they tend to need a clutch and dual mass flywheel replacement at the same time and typically around 100K miles.

First indication of impending flywheel problems tended to be starter motor failure due to being full of metal swarf from the flywheel.

Not a bad job but you do need a tool to set the self adjusting clutch up (not just an alignment tool).

It seems a bit better now.It hadn't been used since the summer.Seems to stall quickly enough if I let the clutch up in 2nd or 3rd with the brakes on.Not keen on manuals anyway these days.It seems quite low geared and with only 130 horses, it's no flying machine.Only manual I drive regularly is MrsDs Korando, which is much newer, has quite a bit more power and lots more torque.More refined too!Really it's a bit of a funnyosity and I wouldn't pay much for one,but ok for the money.Sort of reminds me of those little Japanese things, that looks like a Jaguar or Rolls Royce or somesuch, but is actually a Nissan Micra!

Hole in the floor should already be there on an X type… it’s like they knew… 🤣

Interesting take on the X-Type. They are shackled with a 'sham Jag' image. Maybe the bigger engined ones or estates are better.

Buyers thought so too it seems. Even with all the various models in production recently Jaaag sales remained pretty dismal except '16-'20.

2008 -   65.000
2012 -   54.000
2013 -   77.000
2014 -   81.570
2015 -   83.986
2016 - 148.730
2017 - 178.601
2018 - 180.198
2019 - 161.601
2020 - 102.494
2021 -   86.270
2022 -   61.661

But by 2008,the X Type was pretty well finished and the XF up and running. They made around 330000 X Types over 8 years so 40k per year average.Sad really,it got slated for being FWD and Ford based, but when they brought the RWD non Ford XE out,not enough bought that either.

Don't think there's actually much wrong with the clutch now.Sort of warming to it a bit.The engine is very harsh by modern standards, but in the noughties,a diesel had to be offered so I suppose that was what was available at the time.As a 500 quid bit of fun, it's a no brainer, but can't help thinking a small trader would have it up for perhaps £1.5k, with the buyer having higher expectations that might well not be met.

Is it a 2.2 ? If so beware if it sounds noisy/ diesely. On the transits the injectors fail and make them sound harsh esp from cold . They should sound quite refined really . Leaving the injectors like it for too long can cause cracked pistons from the extra shock loading from the diesel knock .

Richard Porter of smiff and sniff fame made a good point I think of Jaguar not being able to offer the same kind of finance deals as BMW/Merc etc which means the cars were never as attractive to buy.

I wonder what would have happened if the x-type was released before the Mondeo as well. Most people don't seem to care that a Cayenne is just a Tourag etc so never understood the hate these got

If you want a nice one, go for the 3.0 auto. Very powerful and smooth. Okay, if you are comparing it to something built 15yrs later and costing ten times as much, then maybe not so good, but as something for bargain basement money, they are very nice indeed.

This one is definitely a 2.0d.It is a lovely thing inside, and actually quite pretty on the outside, being Geoff Lawsons swansong. And then you start the engine!

Went down an ARonline rabbit hole and read the X Type Development Story.Apparently, the wheelbase is shorter than on the Mondeo. If the Mondeo wheelbase had been used,it would have given it more rear legroom than the larger S Type, which wouldn't have looked good. Also made it quite a long thing, with the need for a long "tail".Did have a sit in the back.I'm over six feet, and there's just about enough room to sit behind myself.Plenty of headroom though, which surprised me.

Probably find similarities with the market for Rover 75s, where the very few people who want them are picky over trim levels and specs, etc.

True, but apart from VED it would actually be a cheap Winter Beater (AWD) they arent that much to insure... £45 even for me!!!!!!!!! so it would definitely be a good an car just for winter slogging. Still cheap at that.

How much is the VED?I think "ours" is £210,but might be wrong.

Auction it. If it sells at least it will be out of your way and you won't have the hassle of breaking it.
