J-T Posted Friday at 23:05 Posted Friday at 23:05 Phwoaar, that’s lovely. If I remember rightly these got an absolutely glowing write up in the press and then Fiat in their wisdom would only import 500. My dad had a 1.9TD when I was a kid that I wished was a sedici instead. Do these have a plastic tailgate, I’m sure my dads did?

Yeah and the tailgate weighs a tonne. oh, add some new struts to the list as they don’t hold the boot up 😂
GeordieInExile Posted Saturday at 09:07 Posted Saturday at 09:07 Mega. Just mega! How come these all had unpainted bumpers? Did the Tipo not have painted ones that early at all, was that a facelift thing?
Gompo Posted Saturday at 09:15 Posted Saturday at 09:15 Top stuff. I used to pass one of these on my daily commute back in 2007/2008, but since then I've perhaps only seen them at shows. mk2_craig, Tenmil Socket and ProgRocker 3

The 16v had unpainted bumpers with the red stripe, but the un-sporty ones higher in the range had the bottom half of the bumpers in body colour. Strange I know. And they all had red stripes regardless of what colour the car was. GeordieInExile 1

That’s been robbed of its red tinted back lights and alloys and replaced with 14’s off a lower model Tipo. the expensive hard to get bits are missing
andy18s Posted Saturday at 09:42 Posted Saturday at 09:42 Very nice buy. Always wanted a 16v but the stars never aligned for me. I've always enjoyed my Fiat's from mk1 Strada cl55's,through 105 and 130 Tc's and onto a couple of Tipoes. The last being a 3dr in black 1.4.
ProgRocker Posted Saturday at 11:16 Posted Saturday at 11:16 As someone who used to own a Tempra, I approve of this! Buona Fortuna!

Simon_punto Posted Saturday at 13:51 Author Posted Saturday at 13:51 So, I didn’t realise this would be so popular. A bit of a back story to how I decided at a young age I wanted a 16v Tipo in red- Back in 1993, my dad had a blue G reg 1.4 DGT Tipo and happened to be up at our local Fiat dealer, and on the forecourt for sale was their 6 month old ex-demo red 2.0 i.e (K415KSL- remember that reg) I fell in love with it but unfortunately being the early 90’s the insurance man said no, and I’ll never forget sitting in the back of that car on a snowy test drive. I was gutted. Since buying the Punto, and taking it to shows I got involved with a few people in the old Fiat community and one chap in particular who had a black 1.4 Tipo, not far from me. He mentioned his dad has a red 2.0 that had been off the road for years, had no floor in it and the interior was in his black Tipo, and if I wanted it. At the time I wasn’t in the position to take it but I was sent some photos anyway and found out it was K415KSL). For days I was trying to work out how I could save it and take it on as it was THE car, but unfortunately it was a breaker as the mice had been at the wiring and it had been sitting on grass, it was just too far gone. I actually have a long history with that particular Fiat dealer as I worked there for 11 years as a Fiat/ Abarth specialist and got to know a lot of people at Fiat HQ so that would have been great to save. The ironic thing is that it went to the guy who I bought mine from as he has broken numerous 16v’s over the years so I’m sure there is a piece of K415KSL in my car. 500tops, dome, Jenson Velcro and 6 others 9

mk2_craig Posted Saturday at 15:00 Posted Saturday at 15:00 Love the Fiat Tipo and the hot ones in particular. I wish I’d been in the position to buy Nigel Mansells car, which was something of a one-off: https://www.carscoops.com/2022/06/a-fiat-tipo-once-owned-by-f1-champion-nigel-mansell-could-be-yours/ warch, AnthonyG, 500tops and 5 others 8

Simon_punto Posted Sunday at 14:45 Author Posted Sunday at 14:45 Started some wee jobs on the Tipo today while the wee man had his nap. Also realised that my to do list is getting bigger but hey, it’s an old Fiat. Wiper blades on the lights are indeed ruined, I need a drivers side headlamp because that has a massive chip in it, removed some stickers and relocated the Tipo club one to the rear window. Had a new old stock Fiat AA sticker for the windscreen so added that. I also had the rear lights off because a few bulbs had gone, replaced them and gave them a clean, and tried a couple of panels with compound to see how it would come up. It has been painted (badly) but I’m just wondering if it’d come up with a wet sand and polish. I also polished up the extremely rare back lights when they were off. To be fair it didn’t come up too bad. Also finished blackening the bumpers and removing paint marks on the black plastics. The interior light wasn’t working, found out there was no bulb in it, put a bulb in and it wouldn’t go off so now know the reason it was removed. Oh and the v5 arrived. The biggest bonus was that my missus, who hates everything about cars, admitted that she preferred this to the Punto. outlaw118, jon.k, Dan29 and 24 others 27
outlaw118 Posted Sunday at 19:57 Posted Sunday at 19:57 Just catching up with everything, but I saw the title, and it earned priority. Top darts that man, that's bloody AMAZEBALLZ mk2_craig, Low ontime and Matty 3
Macscrooge Posted Sunday at 19:59 Posted Sunday at 19:59 That’s wonderful! I nearly had a 1.6 Tipo as a company car back in 1990 but I was seduced by the interior (and cheaper tax) of a Rover 214 instead.
AnthonyG Posted Sunday at 21:13 Posted Sunday at 21:13 The Mansell Tipo is fascinating, can you imagine a manufacturer making a bespoke version of one of their standard models for one of their drivers today? The total production cost, pulling it off the line and trimming it in leather, doing the special colour etc, it probably cost more for Fiat to make that car that it would have to just give him a Thema 8.32!

I’m sure any of manufacturers would bend over backwards to appease someone the caliber of Mansell. It likely would, but he probably didn’t want a Thema 8.32 but a bespoke Tipo though. That probably makes him one of us on here, and just made me smile a bit. 😄 RoadworkUK, mk2_craig, AnthonyG and 1 other 4
AnthonyG Posted Sunday at 21:32 Posted Sunday at 21:32 Michael Schumacher apparently loved his 00’s Fiat Croma MPV, although I don’t think it was done in a special spec. That probably makes him one of us as well! RoadworkUK and IronStar 2
warch Posted Sunday at 23:05 Posted Sunday at 23:05 This is brilliant absolutely love it. Mass market Italian cars like FIATs are a an endless source of frustration to me in respect of the British car buying public. For decades they made cars that were reasonably well made and lovely to drive, but absolutely no fucker would buy them because they’d rather buy what everyone else had*. My mate had a 1300 Uno as a first car, went fantastically compared to anything else Mk2 Fiesta/Breadvan Polo etc and was quite stylish as well (single wiper iirc). I did once have a go in a Tipo and liked it. I liked that early Punto with the six speed box too, back when nothing had six gears. *British bikers are the same, hence why Ducatis are still relatively rare.
Simon_punto Posted yesterday at 20:42 Author Posted yesterday at 20:42 Cleaned up the Abarth mats, ready to be refitted to the car tomorrow. Also picked up an original grundig 3841 radio cassette so waiting on that arriving. It’ll just fill the hole until I get round to wiring it in as I’ll need to find a donor radio plug 500tops and Wibble 2

They do, an apprentice at the dealer I worked at found this out the hard way when he raised a new Tipo on the lift with boot open, it hit the ceiling of the workshop and snapped in half just below the rear screen. 😳
