Yugo Sana....In beige OMG!

Spotted today unloved and up a driveway since 2002. A bit scabby but I'm thinking of door knocking the doubtlessly bewildered owner.

Worth a punt?

Any negotiating tips?

Take an oven ready chicken, a string vest, and a potted dahlia. They might need one or all as a trade.

Go for it, you never know what may happen! Its as if most of the remaining Yugos have been left on drives, Im certain theres one in Fleet, despite the fact all you can see is the exhaust pipe.

Yes, or leave a note tucked in the door.

Can't say I'm familiar with the Sana! Have you seen the Yugo specialist 'garage' in Wallasey (on the dock road).

I had a copy of Auto Express from when the Sana was launched, they were really pushing it as an Escort beater - more car for less money. Predicting big things as I recall, the Saviour of Yugo.

Just shows how wrong you can be :)

I've driven an H reg escort and I have to say the Yugo would have to be pretty dire to be worse than that!

SANA FTW!!!111!!

When I was a student many many years ago I worked on one of these. Att I couldnt remember what it was I repaired, but what I did remember was it was black and the Tipo 'lookalike' was badged as a Yugo Sana and the redhead art teacher that owned it was worth slipping a length to

GR8 transportz. The last time I saw one was when I was a Student Grant type. Thats 20 years ago (Fuck, where did the time go?!)

To be fair, civil war kicking of in (then) Yugoslavia didn't help...

I was working at Yugo dealer when they came out,I went on a one day introductory course on them. Must have been 1989.

I saw 1 or 2 in Malta badged as Yugo Florida

That still places it almost a decade ago...

Go for it. Solid Gold Autoshite.

I only ever saw one in the wild. That was in 1994 when I lived in Talbot Rd, Northampton. The Sana was beige. It was also owned by a Lollipop man.....

Bloody 'ell a Yugo Sana! I remember a girl at primary school who's mum had one, similar to the Red one pictured.

I also saw a few in Belguim but were talking early 90s here.

Wasn't the Sana based on an early design for the Fiat Tipo?

Posted

They were sold in the States as the Florida. Still some knocking about on ebay.com

They look very similar to a Citroen ZX IMHO.

From http://zastavanacionale.com

"In the mid-80s, a group of Zastava engineers set about creating the company's best car to date. Using Fiat facilities and working from a Fiat Tipo proposal by Giorgetto Giugiaro, they come up with a roomy, clean design with a 0.32 coefficient of drag."

Sana = win. i havent seen one for years.. Top gear test from 1990....

I cant imagine these surviving now in much more than single figures - you have to get it!

When I first saw replied, it didnt register that youd said Sana! I have never seen one, only first heard of them in one of those typical its obscure so its crap books. I think they look pretty good, and considering what they were making at the time it had a very modern design. What sort of state is it in?

A few years ago my Auntie had one of these shit heaps. It was a one-onwer low mileage job bought for next to nowt. Her lad crashed it after about a fortnight, busting the headlamps. It took about 6 months to find replacements, still attached to another (ex-taxi, unbelievably) Sana which we bought for a few pence. Lobbed them on, another fortnight went by... crashed again busting the new headlamps. AH, F**K IT  some local geezer came and hiabed the pair of Sanas away.

What is the correct pronounciation of "SANA"?

Also, while we are at it, which budget car manufacturer offered a special edition "Saga" model, aimed full-square at garden-centre-loving, cruise-ship-holiday silvertops? Was it Proton? Or have I made it all up?

Posted

'Saga' is the domestic name of the old Proton 1.3 and 1.5 efforts that first came to the UK, but the name was not used in the UK.

What is the correct pronounciation of "SANA"?

I've always said it the same way as Santana, like Sultana but obviously with less letter in it. So "Sarna".

Could be wrong though..

From the days when TG was unbiased & informative. Those days FTW!!

Now TG wouldn't even bother reviewing a car like that, or most other ordinary vehicles leaving it to magazines instead!

Of course, there's one person who has never appreciated 'ordinary' cars

Now back to a slice of classic, 'informative' & 'interesting' TG form 1986:

I like them, kinda a cross between a Tipo and a ZX.

My old man considered one to replace my Ma's ageing Panda, but ended buying an Mk1 Ibiza instead :D
