Definitely the safer bet and you don't get the stupid road tax I had with the 2.7.

I've done 300,000 miles in my 2.2 manual.

I think a lot of the common issues are to do with the 2.7 engine. The EGR's, turbo actuators, DPF all a nightmare to get to as the engine is stuffed in there . There's also two of everything so they're constantly going into limp model. 

I never had any suspension issues on mine and I think they're generally pretty robust but I think that's on a car by car basis I've seen other folk having nightmare with it.. You're only potential headache is the handbrake, which again I think may cause less issues on the manual as it will actually be used. I think some of the issues on the 2.7's is they just get put in park and the handbrake doesn't get used very often.

On modern cars the electronic handbrake is a brilliant design it’s just a little motor on the calliper that winds the pistons in and out .

On some of the older stuff there are cables and rods and hamsters on wheels inside metal boxes that cause all kinds of problems .

The handbrake automatically applies as a hill-holder and when you leave the car, so, they should be working just as hard.

But I suspect there are just more 2.7s so you see more broken 2.7s, and the handbrakes get messed up by inexpert garages not following the procedure for a cable change - or owners just ignoring the problem when told how much a new module is.

I have a vague thought that 2.2 models don't have AMVAR dampers but that seems odd for UK. I know they don't have moving spoilers. If they don't have AMVAR that's a whole load of idiocy removed right there, and they run a separate power steering pump as well I think (still electric though).

Inside:

The moving bit

The torque-sensor and emergency release catch

The main slider

The motor and gearbox

So all the motor does is spin that main shaft - what pulls the handbrake tight or releases it is the threaded end of the handbrake cable going into the shaft, and the equalising force of a spring on the other side. 

When it tightens it draws the cable into the shaft, which slides in the driving gear on the gearbox until the torque sensor records the amount of force needed is what has been set as required to register the handbrake has applied.

When it releases it moves the opposite direction.

In changing mode, it unthreads the cable and pushes the far end of the module to the opposite side. The same effect, without unthreading, is achieved with the emergency release.

In both cases the cable is rejoined, then retorqued (this is where mine is allegedly failing).

The physical hardware is shared with a couple of cars - BMW E60/61, Land Rover Disco III for example - and made by Küster. The software is the critical bit that makes C6 modules so obscenely expensive.

I don't think my handbrake auto applied as I used to leave it off sometimes.

Handbrake definitely does not auto apply (or auto release) on mine.

Will release on the button only when either brake or accelerator are depressed.

No AMVAR, no variable spoiler on 2.2, and yes separate power steering pump.

Many C6 are now suffering with corrosion around the centre rear sphere cluster (pipes etc.), worth getting a look at this and treating it if possible.

As others have suggested, the DW12 2.2 engine seems much more reliable than the 2.7.

That's true, mine looks like this and is going to need sorting soon if it's going to avoid sitting embarrased by the side of the road in a puddle of LDS.

I've done 400 miles in it so far, average 43mpg with a fair bit of 'enthusiastic' driving, the PO got 46mpg but also I think was an economy driver. It has improved a bit but still doesn't feel like 170bhp, its a very long ratio gear box though and performs a little bit like a petrol - as in you don't get that turbo dizzle surge at 2000rpm ish and power builds nicely up just over 4k rpm - this may be affected by the whopping flat spot at 2.5k rpm though! I've read swirl flaps and vacuum lines are dodgy on these, so will inspect (feels like overboost and wastegate being slapped open). Its a very torquey motor though, will pull from idle in 4th or 5th with no bother and really promotes a relaxed driving style, must find some driving gloves, would suit.

Not much to report so far, I knew the O/S rear ABS sensor needed doing and this puts up 3 errors (ESP and handbrake too), the aforementioned 2.5k flat spot is definitely there and the filth! Needs a bloody good clean. Decent used bumpers, bonnet and drivers front wing will improve the looks drastically.

I'd not choose silver if I could, these look sexy AF in the green or red they apparently very rarely came in- not sure why all of them seem to be grey/silver/black!

C6 can let the BXeys be taken to bits, need to swap the interior a/c stuff from the foreign BX16 TRS to the blue GT, then the TRS can get registered and sold on, it's outstayed its welcome on my aunties driveway!
