The e-pedal effectively gives 1 pedal driving with super vicious regen braking.

I don't do much stop start town driving, so get more benefit from longer, more gentle regen from either D mode or B mode.

That's 124 miles for £5.39...

Tomorrow we are going to trust it with a specific, very important mission. 

A trip to Callander for pies😂

This is a 70 mile round trip, so should be well within the range available.  We have a backup of chargers in Callander should it tank the old battery...

When you look at these figures it is terrifying. Four years old and now worth only £9700. What are they new? £30,000? That is £20.000 over four years. £5,000pa or £100pw! It has cost £1.00 per mile just in depreciation! They will need to come down an awful lot more before I will be able to afford one.

£5k per annum tbh isn't far off what some cars used to depreciate from new in pre-covid times. Yeah it's eye watering but we're getting back to a newer 'normal' now. 

Cars are a waste of money for the most part.

As promised, the Leaf was taken on its inaugural PEH run today. 

The pies of choice were Steak and Gravy and Steak and Haggis. Sides were Olive and rosemary bread, plus Viennese Whirl and Empire biscuit.

 

The run up was done by me - pretty decent for mainly motorway and fast a road work

We took the opportunity to do one of our favourite local stoat routes, covering 5.5km before lunch. The weather was great and the flora stunning. Views were not bad too!

The good lady took over for the run home - her first distance run in the car.

She got on well with it and seems to enjoy the regenerative braking for making progress down country roads..

Interestingly, despite showing 39% battery left on the screen, leafspy shows the battery level much closer to 50%..Screenshot_20240715-160305.png.a0f6e03cf838a746af5a383512b95c61.png

 

The car started off with 31.5kWh in the battery and ended up with 16.1 remaining.

15.4kWh for 76 miles means the car did 4.93miles per KWh. We pay approximately 22p per kWh, so the total trip cost £3.39.

That's to move two people a total of 76 miles.

For comparison, the 4hrs parking cost £3.30, effectively doubling the cost 😂

In the Octavia that would have been (76 miles at 52mpg, and 1.469/L) £9.76 in fuel alone. Effectively, both of the pies were free using fuel savings🥳

Car is likely to be on station duty tomorrow, so I think I'll leave charging it til Wednesday.

That's bloody good.  I think the cheapest diesel round here works out at £6.69 per gallon, so if my man maths are any good (probs not) your car is doing the equivalent of  about 155 miles to the gallon.

Aye it's not bad all things considered, and shows that the car is fit for at least some of the longer round trips we fairly regularly do.

At the moment we're still learning what it does/how fast it consumes the battery etc.

Hopefully we'll get to a position soon where we have a good idea how far we can go on a round trip without charging, and when we'll need to top up on the way.

Certainly quite a step learning curve.

I think that Zap  Map app thing can plan your route with chargers along the way.

Even better, ABRP will plan your remaining battery and the right stops for getting to your destination with enough battery left for you.

Got that app, mainly use it to scout out Chargers at my destinations. Pretty useful.

Been having a good play with this to understand what we can reasonably use the Leaf for.  Handy being able to set lower and upper limits for arrival values and max charge values.

Time for a guessing game!

I've never actually timed to see how long the car takes to charge whilst on the 'granny charger' at the house.

So today, I thought you could watch along and join in!

The game is simple : guess how long the Leaf takes to charge to 100% on the dash.. The charge was started at 0845.

You can guess either the finishing time, or the total hours and minutes it takes.

The game will be complete when the dash reports 100% and the 3 charging lights are on solid

Things that might help you guess:

I'll be using a 10A charger as pictured below

The 2nd light is flashing - indicating the battery is between 33-66% (which fits with what both the dash and LeafSpy report)

Assuming onboard charger is about 90% efficient that is 2.16kW actual charge rate

So 10.18 hours

I'm gonna say 9 hours and 23 minutes. So all lights lit just after 6pm.

I've been following this thread with interest - full disclosure, for a while I drove an earlier version of the Leaf, with a range of about 90 miles; where I work leased one as a staff pool car from 2018 to 2021 or so. It was white with all sorts of 'eCar' graphics all over it.

I'm sure I took some pics, but I can't now find them - so have an archive pic cribbed off the staff intranet:

Mallon opens first meeting of Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Task ...

I was impressed with the power transfer and the general smoothness; though less impressed with the visibility, the awkward footbrake button hidden in the top corner of the driver's footwell (not dissimilar to my XM, so you'd think I'd have been used to it), and the inevitable sense of doom when arriving at my destination, with the battery down to 30%, to find a diesel Insignia parked up in the only charge point for miles around... but I never quite ran out of power, even though it was touch and go a few times to get it back to base.

Good to hear about real-world experience of secondhand EVs, with hard data rather than anecdote!

This leaf has the "handbrake pedal" too. It's not really used. The parking pall in the gearbox is good enough for me 😂

I've yet to encounter any issues accessing a public charger, but I am sure my engaging manner, wit, charm and tolerance will ensure that any problems are resolved amicably...

 

As an aside, A Better Route Planner let's you set a minimum number of stalls for chargers - so you can mitigate the likelihood of landing somewhere and everything being in use/blocked
