They probably do. Engine numbers are checked* as part of the yearly technical inspection. Swapping the engine like-for-like is a faff here. Doing an engine swap to something that was never in the car is impossible legally.

Engine and chassis numbers being legible are the biggest item on the Bulgarian Techno Test for imports.

I've seen Transits and Discoverys getting rejected because of a rusty chassis number, even though there others on the vehicle that are fine.

If car is (still) Serbian-plated, there’s a legal way to get new VIN or engine number. You get car to a technical inspection, they note that VIN/engine number is rusted through, and send you away for a police examination. If they’re really rusted out and not rusted out* they confirm this, issue you a confirmation and new numbers starting with PUS (by police directive) prefix. From there, you take the car to one of the few workshops certified for entering those numbers, and you get new registration certificate issued with the new numbers on it.
Surprisingly for Serbian bureaucracy, this process is not stupidly complicated, expensive or lengthy, and unless you’re trying to do something sketchy, you should be on your merry way in a few days total. My 156 has PUS engine number done by one of the previous owners as the original one has rusted out.

Why does anyone give a shit what engine is inside, other than emissions/insurance/tax reasons and especially if the numbers match in case of like for like replacement is beyond me though.

I'd love a k-way, as one of the 1000 special editions of AX we didn't actually get here.

I believe we got a very similar special called the Splash. Definitely had the same seats.

An elderly couple in my neighbourhood had one and at the time it was the only prefacelift AX I'd ever seen. Only ever saw it move once. But then one day, in about 2009, it was gone and a KA Mk2 was in its place. The scrappage scheme had got another.

Never forgave whoever the hell the owner was for that...

And no, I'm not going to do a collection thread in which I have to take about 450 different impromptu roadside stops while steam comes out of the bonnet...

That's easy - just buy a different car. :-)
Plus, if you bring it home for some other shiter than that's not  a collection thread - it'd be a delivery thread instead. No angst.
Solved - here you go, should be a fun* trip

Interesting, I took a (terrible) photo of an AX Splash scrappage scheme victim locally. Wasn't F210NCF was it?

Well let's just say that I'm out here to drive something that will unquestionably qualify for a Future Shite thread...

Sadly I can't remember as I was very young at the time and could never get a photo. Lived in Nuneaton if that helps.

Nah wasn't it in which case but I do remember there being a fair few scrappage scheme 'victims' which riled me, although looking back I probably spent way too much emotion on it.

I've still got madcap idea to import a Lybra or MK2 Delta. Very low risk, but I will do it.

I find that I have to look in this thread with caution as there’s some really nice stuff in there.

And I do love a left hooker.

Looking at right hand drive cars for sale in France, as you do.

Staying well in his juices, apparently. Screenshot_20240727_230605_Facebook.jpg.2a6d59c258f3bbe414bd47421a3c9495.jpg

Jargon - the phrase “rester dans son jus" means untouched or still in it’s original condition or unmessed-with.

The bien - just refers to the thing - the lorry.

"Attraction Foraine" - fairground attraction - some kind of service vehicle - which probably explains it's preservation.

Advert has miss-spelt the vehicle name - it's a Latil not an Atil...😏
