Half-decent Banger Rally

...anyone?Always fancied doing a banger rally, but the majority put me off with the fact they're "zany", "wacky" and trying far too hard. And most of them demand that you scrap the pile of chod you drove thousands of miles in, before flying home to pick your 6-month old Mondeo up from the airport carpark.I want to drive something interesting, with a bunch of like-minded folk, to somewhere interesting. And then drive it back. And maybe even keep using it, so no dreadful dulux paintjobs. But the charity aspect appeals to me, as does the vague competition aspect. I'm just struggling to find anything that won't be full of dentists from Oxford with a 52-plate Freelander they "bought" for "£500"

Autoshite rally 2010?! Rules are, nothing newer than 1980, or over £500. Overnight stops are courtesy of your favoured ride and a tesco value sleeping bag. 8)*edit* must have less than 3 months MOT remaining *2nd edit* i'd rather have anything from my criteria than a Freelander, these people must have the Pogweasel LDV masochism gene!

Tricky. You could buy a 2CV and join us on the Eight Ball Rally in September http://www.rosalyn.me.uk/eightball/

Last time, we did 3500 in 17 days driving in a figure of eight around the UK. This time we might only do the northern loop due to time constraints.

2CVs are pricey, but Dyanes are cheaper...

I also enjoyed the BXagon last year, when we did 3100 in 14 days driving right around France. That was a one-off really though. That was organised by the BX Club. I guess there's a pattern developing here. Club stuff tends to be a bit more car-centric and less about 'hilarious' pranks in 'some shitter' that we'd actually want to keep and cherish.

See, I have a problem with these kind of things, like it's a miracle these things make it to the shops and back.............I drive a 39 year old Land Rover Diesel EVERY day, rain or shine, and recently, on a whim, delivered a snowplough, drove a bit further, picked up a set of Sierra doors, and returned home. 230 miles or so all in. Took hours like, but it did the job. Brilliantly. Never checked the oil, tyre pressures, washer bottle etc, just got in and drove the bloody thing. Unloaded it the next day, and went to work. I have a 70 quid Sierra on the drive, and I filled and emptied the tank twice in a weekend, just tootling around like it was 1990 once more. No sweat these old motors, just throw them at the job and they will do it.

I'd happily do something like this, but for me it would be more of a 'driving' mission', to Poland and back in the Metro or something. Also, I think having rules like nothing after 1980 is a bit crap. Rules out a hell of a lot of cars owned by people on here and sounds like some beardy classic show.

I would love to do something like this as driveing the moderns i use most days is pants  when i was younger i used to love going for a drive with no destination in mind but now as im a bit older i would rather drive to get someware or for a reason,it would be good to just get in an old motor and drive for the hell of it

Destination Nurburgring? For those that make it there we could stage the Grand Prix de Autoshite.Imagine the mechanical carnage.

at the moment theres a group from retro car club organiseing a trip could tag along with them or should i say behind them

It's more a case of driving something fun, having a good time with friends, and seeing some great places than "OMG!! I drove a 90's family hatchback over a thousand miles!!". That's why I hate the Zany-Brigade.You're more likely to get a carb'ed, bulletproof motor over that distance without some serious issues than a neglected modern car. But it'd still be fun :)

Now that's an idea!To be honest I cover up to 600miles a week in a £150 Micra so I can't see the attrition rate being that high. Lets face it, we are all seasoned banger buyers who can pick up and run cheap cars as daily drivers without too many problems so where would the challenge be?Maybe we should all put £250 in a kitty and someone independant buys 10 to 15 different cars and we put the keys into a hat and draw out which car to use in a raffle.

Maybe we could organise a little trip to see Mk2_CraigThen with him in tow go see VWpowered and his local spots (Both the empty houses and cars)Then venture down to madrid to see Jason A then all the way back up and see Daniel R25 upto see stoters. Then HOME ?Would cost a FORTUNE i would think, but could always be edited / adapted for peoples budgets

The thought of an Austin 1800 or Cortina Mk 4 dicing with Porsches / M3 BMWs at the 'Ring is giving me a bit of a touch on.Has anyone been there in Shite?

Posted

The staff at PPC have taken all sorts of DIY bodged shite there with various results.

Posted

A mate took a RedTop homebrew Nova pickup to the 'Ring and gave a good account of himself. Pissed off some British Porker owners, but he tells me the Boxheads thought his car was "uber-kuhl"

Wrecks to Czech has had me tempted a few times, but I'm going that way anyhow..

I'd like to make a trip to Russia/Slovenia/Poland etc to pick up a Lada 1200 classic. I'm not fussed about it being a LHD, and I was thinking of making the trip out in a Rover of some description and doing a trade. This would help to balance out the shite balance between the east and the west and avoid damaging the shite time continuum. A nice Rover 618 would be just the ticket.

I can highly recommend www.streetsafari.com events. They've got plenty to choose from including CzechWrecks, Staples2Naples, Home2Rome, end2end and the US BA/BE rally. I'm on H2R this year as I haven't done it yet. That will just leave e2e which is uk based; LE-JOG in bangers. They're good events in my opinion as they only take a long weekend and the car limit is set low at 150 quid. Sorts the men from the boys!

DON'T worry about any enforced WACKINESS. You're left to your own devices as far as how you deck your car out / costumes / etc. The events are mainly about getting the car there every day, having a beer of an evening, and chatting about shite old cars. Ideal!

If you're thinking of doing the Ring, a lot of people, me included, have done it on the way back from CzechWrecks. It's not a particularly long drive from Calais so it's not a trip in it's own right unless you want to spend a weekend there. I wouldn't in a banger. Bear in mind that they won't let you on if your car smells remotely oily.

If you've got any questions, just ask! I've been doing these since 2004 and only missed one year when a wedding got in the way. My wedding. Still I met my missus on S2N so swings and roundabouts! Our cake topper were models of the Lada Riva and the 89 Camry we both had when we met...

I've said before that I like the idea of doing a banger rally but without all the wackiness and having to cover the car in fake fur and what have you.Something like DW's BXagon would be great, that sounded like a proper sort of rally to me and wouldn't be full of zany accountants that were OMG Incredibly brave and heroic driving a really old 1994 Mondeo to Italy.

Posted

I'd absolutly would jump at the chance to do a "run" but there are caveats...... none of this "crazy" pish.........No way do I go through France (sorry VWP).......No scrapping at the end of the run...please can I bring something back with me.............

Posted

HAH !!! it's just come to me.........why dont we do a run to say Poland or the likes....and A frame some chod back behind our shite ?? that would sort things out for everybody..... :D:D

Posted

I went on one of the first staples 2 naples trips which was good but the wackiness was unnecessary. I have been looking to do another but none really tickle my fancy.Instead I have been trying to organise buying something fun for 1k and driving to the ring and back with some mates. Think this is the better way of doing it. Having said that thier idea of fun and mine don't exactly tally.

A 1.8 K-series would be bad karma on your guests... at least take them a 620 - weasel power would make cheap?I'd be up for a shite rally - my 1983 Triumph Acclaim has just run out of MOT but doesn't need much - spot of welding and a better exhaust repair than my last welded-on in the dark with a lump of old XJ6 exhaust bodge: it was bought 2 years ago by it's last owner for £200 and given to me 6 months ago for nothing, it must qualify under pretty much any rules of cheapness and general shite-ness :lol:I am put off by the enforced "zany" behaviour and "scrap it and fly home" nature of a lot of the ones cropping up now - maybe we could/should organise our own - in terms of "shiteteria" for entry, how about making it as simple as 95% (for example) of those sold in the UK must be no longer roadworthy on the DVLA figures, rather than any age/value limits?

Id be well up for a Nurburgring trip. The wife and I, plus a couple of friends went in the Allegro a couple of years ago. It was completely brilliant!

We didnt go as one of these rally type events, just packed up and went on our own. The whole experience was very good value too, accomodation is cheap enough and the Germans are a great bunch. The Nurburgring is an ideal place to visit as its not too far away so shite has a good chance of getting there and back but its far away enough to be an adventure. Taking shite round the track is a real buzz too, loads of thumbs up from people in ferraris and porkers. Cant wait to go again... its just getting round to it!

Absolutely, we are sending off two Mk2 transits to Paris, some people are amazed. I don't own anything newer than 1988.

Agreed, and I don't have anything on the road that's pre 1980 at the mo. Once I swap the axle on the Mk1 SWB I would though. OH, I could take the Mk1 pinto powered horse box though......

sort of an Autoshite secret Santa? No it's a crap idea, I just know I would end up with something Jap that I couldn't even find the engine in.I like the idea of formally organised banger rallies, but I just can't commit (ie pay for and not get refunded) months in advance!

I've always fancied doing the Plymouth-Dakar Challenge in some crappy old car but the cost's just put me off, Your looking at more than £1000 each which is a lot of money.

There are some more 'local' ones which I'd love to do though, That Autoshite challenge sounds interesting though, Maybe drive over to Eastern Europe in some crappy 80's BL tat then sell it once there and buy some old rough Lada/Skoda/Wartburg etc to come back to blightly in and see who can do it with the least breakdowns.

Got any pics of the Allegro going round the 'Ring???

I'm up for one of these "rallys" but for me it would be more like a fun convoy rather than trying to hang out a Marina's tail on hairpin bends. And none of this pre-80 business otherwise neither of my cars would qualify

Hows about this for an idea....

"THE GREAT AUTOSHITE ANTI SCRAPPAGE SCHEME ANTI BANGER RALLY RALLY"

Instead of picking up a mk1 mondeo that is unlikely ever to break down, giving it a "zany" paint scheme and driving it in a "zany" manner to somewhere in nice predictable Western Europe, then scrapping it and flying home, we do the total OPPOSITE...

...fly to somewhere with loads of rated SHITE, buy some, and drive it home to KEEP.

Let's fill the country up with eastern block shite instead of driving our shite to Italy & scrapping it! Hurrah! :P

I bet it would really piss the goverment do-gooder clots behind the scrappage scheme off, and that would be superb - how about a few protest laps of parliment on the way home in Trabants et al running on 2 star petrol mixed with potato vodka and belching smoke everywhere?!?
